Sundays with Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 153

August 21st, 2011 by Karen 20 Comments

Tabs for the Urban Decay Book of Shadows Volume 4.5

My goodness, Tabs sure had a busy week of kitty modeling, but he turned in some top-notch performances for Urban Decay, Make Up For Ever, NARS, Smashbox and Sula Beauty.

Sometimes I complain about how much work is involved in being his professional and personal assistant/human, but I have to admit — the cat’s got game.

Hope you had a nice weekend. Tabs and I will see you again soon. 🙂

Who is Tabs the Cat? About three years ago I befriended a stray, flea-bitten tabby cat with a bad case of worms. I could see he’d fallen on hard times, but his profound knowledge of high fashion and department store cosmetics led me to believe that he was more than meets the eye. We became fast friends, and now he’s actually my boss (and a successful kitty model). 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Yay! I love the Urban Decay book! I would totally buy any palette if it came with that. It looks like Winnie the Pooh.

Hi, amy. That’s my favorite one this week. I had a lot of fun on it. I did some of the drawing, but most of it is a combination of filters and layer styles in Photoshop.

Actually, if you’re interested, here’s what I did for the UD sketches:

      1. Duplicate your original photo layer and place the duplicate on top
      2. Desaturate the duplicated layer
      3. Duplicate the desaturated layer and place it on top
      4. Invert the duplicated, desaturated layer
      5. Change the layer style to color dodge (don’t worry when the image turns all white)
      6. Apply a slight gaussian blur of about 1px (the sketch should appear)
      7. Now draw over some of the lines with a small gray brush to exaggerate them
      8. Merge all of the layers together
      9. Change the layer style to multiply on top of your blank book page to knock out the white background and just show the pencil sketch lines
      10. Go get froyo for dessert 🙂

absolutely adorable 🙂 You’re such a great digital artist!
I lol’d at the cheek tint. Reminds me of when I used to accidentally kiss my cat on her nose when wearing bright lipstick 🙂

I was on the fence about the Sula Blush Tint, but if it works for Tabs, it can work for me. 😛

Did you sketch the first pics or is that a photoshop program? The shading is great and I’m very, very impressed if you did them by hand. They’re still cool either way. 🙂

Hi, Kim. The sketch was about 70% Photoshop, 30% hand drawing to emphasize some of the lines and really give them a pencil effect using a digital tablet.

But Photoshop did most of the heavy lifting.

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
