OK, so, you know how I’ve been talking about wanting to get new eyeglass frames for, roughly, forever?
I keep putting it off because I have the hardest time committing to couches and, apparently, eyeglass frames, but things escalated this week due to events beyond my control (I lost my glasses), so I need to get a new pair TODAY.
I mean, I do have a backup pair in the house, but they’re too strong and give me a headache if I wear them more than 10 minutes, so I’m headed to the optometrist soon.
I checked Costco, but everything had so much bling on it. Somebody suggested that I check Kaiser, where we have our insurance, for less bling-y glasses, so that’s where I’m going.
I browsed around their website and saw some cute Kate Spade frames, which I’m hoping I can try on today.
So, that’s something, right? I’ll finally have new glasses. New glasses, new year! 🙂
About that, can you believe it? It’s already 2018? Wow, I just got used to writing 2017 on my checks…
Are you doing anything tomorrow night? The baby and I are still recovering from our colds, so I’m lobbying Tabs and El Hub for us to get Chinese takeout and watch cheesy movies at home. That sounds perfect to me. I want to be cozy, comfortable and stuffed when it turns 2018.
I’m a little excited about seeing Mariah Carey try again on New Year’s Eve. Remember that whole debacle last year? You know me, I’m Team MC, so I hope she knocks it out of the park.
In other news, I did a lot of reading this week. I finished a novel called The Wicked City by Beatriz Williams (it was OK…a quick read), and I just started a murder mystery called The Perfect Stranger by Megan Miranda.
It’s taking me a while to get into. I’m seven chapters in and… Well, I hope it picks up soon.
Are you reading anything good? Here are some articles that caught my eye this week…
- I’ve spent the last 48 hours binge-reading TophCam, a blog that mainly covers skin care, but also occasionally delves into makeup. The author, Chris, is a college student who’s also worked in the beauty industry, and he does long, detailed reviews. I really appreciate his in depth Guide to Vitamin C and love his clean, elegant product photography. I’m visually inspired.
- If you’ve bought any makeup from Claire’s for yourself or others, there’s a chance those products could contain asbestos (!)
- Yet another reason to avoid cosmetics testers: you could end up with fecal material ? on your face.
- This three-year-old toddler blends her shadow 100 times better than I did when I was in high school.
- Have you watched Bright on Netflix yet? It’s kind of a weird premise…like Dungeons & Dragons meets Southland. Will Smith plays a cop in present-day, alternate universe L.A. Everything in their world is pretty much the same as ours, except for the magical creatures everywhere. There are fairies, elves, orcs, and I even saw a dragon ? flying in the background in one scene. It’s like LOTR up in the mix. I liked it. Even if you really aren’t into that kind of thing, watch it for the makeup. There are so many intricate, complicated looks that I legit believed orcs and elves were among us… But can somebody tell me why the names of the makeup artists were omitted from the credits??
- I haven’t seen the new Blade Runner movie yet, because why you gotta redo something that doesn’t need to be redone?? Anyway, I’m still crabby about it, but after reading this story about the makeup artists who worked on the film, I kinda wanna see it. Kinda.
- How Lil’ Kim’s money nails wound up at the Museum of Modern Art
- The 11 most popular beauty products at Target in 2017
- No more selfies, and possibly no more dark or colorful nail polish for Meghan Markle when she marries into the royal family… Ouch. The nail polish is a bummer, dude!
Almost another year in the books, my friend. Let’s make these last two days of 2017 good ones. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Happy Caturday! I’ve been borrowing a bunch of books from my library using the Overdrive app. It’s so easy and I don’t have to leave the house. 🙂
I just finished Crazy Rich Asians and China Rich Girlfriend from Kevin Kwan. Those were fun, easy reads. I’m in the middle of Midwives by Chris Bohjalian and it’s pretty good so far.
I can’t believe tomorrow is NYE! I usually prefer doing something low key at home instead of going out. Hope you have a great weekend!

Hey Karen,
Seeing those frames reminds me I need to go do an eye test. I had Lasik a few years ago and I know I no longer see like a hawk, which I was expecting (I was told I may need reading glasses). That’s something I need to do. I’ve started reading the Game of Thrones Books and am on book one and I already see some pretty major differences from the show. Looking forward to that coming back next year as well as West World, which I’ve heard conflicting news on. I’ve not seen Bright yet but I’ve added it to my queue!
Also, good riddance to 2017 and may your 2018 bring lots of good fortune! Did you make any resolutions?

Yes, after my lovely experience with a staph infection on my face I am officially done with swatching makeup. It means that I won’t be very creative anymore, just repurchasing what I know I already like, but with blogs like yours and reviews for things in the future I’m sure I can buy blindly and end up liking whatever I get. Or, I’ll just return it. Now I’m obsessed/paranoid about my health. I never want to experience that again! I’m excited for Megan and Harry, although that nail polish thing is kind of a bummer. If it’s done right and with appropriate clothing, almost any nail color can look professional, imo.

I love Beatriz Williams, but The Wicked City really wasn’t her best effort. I just finished A Hundred Summers- that one was really, really good. Also, Big Little Lies, y’all!!!! I usually avoid ‘buzz worthy’ books because they seldom pan out (I’m looking at you Emma Cline’s ‘The Girls’), but I loved Lies.
When I was reading the article about Meghan Markle (no way I’d ever make it as a royal, btw), I saw an article about what Sephora employees would buy there with $50. Utterly fascinating. I have to go shopping now….

Oooh, love skincare, will definitely check out this blog! I love the Target best-seller list but I can’t get over how terrible the Target website is to use.
I should get new glasses. I wear contacts almost exclusively and wear glasses just around the house. I’m incapable of keeping lenses clean on glasses, plus with circus / etc they just aren’t practical for me.

Happy New Year, Karen! I saw Blade Runner and it’s not a remake, but an enjoyable continuation of the original. If you loved the original and the questions it brought about AI/what is real life, you’ll enjoy the new one with Ryan Gosling. Wait, why are you hesitating if Gosling’s in it? I thought he and Harrison Ford had some great chemistry together, and the cinematography was gorgeous. BTW, no need to see it in IMAX or 3D…the cinematographer himself said so.
Liz Smith says
100% totally agree with everything you said. Definitely NOT a remake. Well worth a watch. Ryan does a great job.

I put off getting new glasses just like you! But earlier this year I got pink eye and realized that my glasses from high school were not going to cut it haha so I ended up getting Ralph Lauren frames from Lenscrafters.
Happy new year to you and your family! We have about a foot of snow here so we’re also planning on staying in.

I was just eyeglass shopping yesterday, I finally found a really great pair but it took a while. Have you checked out Warby Parker? They have a good selection of cute and affordable frames, I stumbled upon their showroom on 4th Street in Berkeley. I didn’t end up getting my frames there, but saw some strong contenders.

Happy 2018, babe.
I need computer glasses, too. Oy.
Meghan Markle. I am the odd man out that I think she is an act. I hope I am wrong, for Harry’s sake – he seems so genuine.

I did watch Bright but was disappointed. It turned out to be another buddy cop movie, reaching for some sort of social commentary but failed imo.
Happy New Year Karen, Tabs, Connor Claire and El Hubs!

Happy New Year to you, too, Syahidah!

I watched Bright and didn’t realize it was basically LOTR’s middle earth set in the modern day (before I tuned in). I thought it was OK, if predictable. I admit that I never loved the original Blade Runner. I liked it just fine but I never thought of it as a cinematic masterpiece. So, that said, I liked the new BR just fine, too. I can see how people who feel strongly about the first one will also feel strongly about the new one. 🙂
I finally started watching Downton Abbey and the Hubs asked me if As The World Turns would be next on my list. He’s not a huge fan of British period drama. HAHA!
Karen says
GIRL. Have you watched The Crown? It’s the pinnacle of British period drama!
I hope you guys have a wonderful Christmas and New Years. 🙂
Kim says
Oh, I HAVE! I have mixed feelings about Phillip, but his backstory had me sobbing like a crazy person. And I was so angry at Jackie Kennedy. 🙂
It was very nice, thank you. The holidays are the only time of the year when I really get to catch up on anything (sleep, most importantly) – and when I realize that my house can actually be clean for more than 12 seconds. HAHA! I hope you enjoyed every minute with Connor and your family. 🙂
I started watching American Gods, too. I’m 4 episodes in, and the jury’s still out.
