Should I bring snacks?!

Aaaaand this is the type of thing El Hub and I talk about these days, LOL! Yeah, I have a playdate…WITH. A. CAT. She’s a tortie/tabby mix, and her foster mom (a cat lady friend of mine who I exercise with) says that if she didn’t already have a house full of animals, she’d keep her in a heartbeat.

Dunno if I’m ever going to feel ready for another cat, or if I’ll ever *not* compare every single cat I meet to Tabs, but I’m gonna keep it low-key and go into the visit with an open heart and mind.

El Hub has also warned me — multiple times — about resisting the urge to bring home a family of felines on a whim (“Sweetie, you can’t just bring home five cats”), and yeah, even I can see that happening from a mile away, HA HA HA!

On that note, your beauty (and otherwise) reading for the week…

  • The next generation of biotech beauty startups are looking at viruses and bacteria as they build out their product lines.
  • Babies are the newest target consumer in the luxury skin care market.
  • Here’s what to look for if you’re searching for products that are truly non-comedogenic.
  • Hair bows have held multiple meanings throughout history. Bows have communicated whether the wearer was single (and ready to mingle!), whether they supported or resisted a particular regime, and have been symbols for resistance movements, among other things.
  • A brief history of black hair, politics and discrimination
  • Ah, the eternal question… Does your skin care need to sting in order to, like, actually work?
  • Could this be the evolutionary reason why cats love to chomp on grass?
  • These runway cats from the Algonquin Annual Cat Fashion Show are super meow-dles!

Another week, another Sir John video because I’m obsessed

Happy weekend to ya. Doing anything involving cats today or tomorrow? (Please say yes.)

I read an article on Good News Network (I subscribe to these positive news articles rather than read the daily barrage of negativenegativenegative) and one man was so heartbroken over a dog that died, he dedicated his life to adopting senior dogs with special needs. He is on Instagram as @wolfgang2242; he even wrote a book about his golden dog posse (in addition to a pig (named Bikini!), a chicken, and a rabbit). On second thought, perhaps El Hub will not appreciate me sharing this info with you. 😉
Just enjoy the play date and being around the kittehs. 😉

I totally applaud New York and California. It is unfortunate that we have to pass such laws, but here we are and hopefully it shifts attitudes in the right direction.

And….BABIES HAVE PERFECT SKIN. They don’t need skin care products!! *steps off soapbox*

    Happy Caturday!

Of course you don’t bring home 5 cats at once- pace yourself over the years. That’s how I ended up mine 😂.

My aunt takes her cats on vacation and brings along her own vacuum to clean up 😹

Maybe I should buy Jiji some grass! He’s got a sensitive lil tummy.

I hope you enjoy meeting this tabby tortie sweetheart!

The biotech skincare sounds interesting, especially if they can get results for rosacea and long term acne. Dear Daughter didn’t have acne until she lived in another city for college. (Which had the worst tasting water from the tap).
I wonder if the custom Lancome foundation can be bought without their signature fragrance which I find overwhelming and irritating? Not sure how well those scanners work if you have redness from rosacea or melasma or other pigmentation issues that should be ignored.
It’s been over a year since Nora kitty went to heaven. I had Dear Daughter’s Nibbler kitten for over two weeks while she was on vacay. While I kept saying I was going to keep the cat (which we raised from a barn kitten and lived with us until DD went away to college and took her with) I also kept saying, “I love you kitten but you’re not Nora”. In the end I was happy to hand Nibbler back to DD. Sigh. Guess it’s still not time to get a new cat. Lately I’ve been entertaining the idea of a dog, but the thought of having to go for a run or walk with it twice a day makes me hesitant. What I really want is another horse. I can get on board with riding everyday again.
    Sorry for running on.
Hope you enjoy your AC this week. I hear it’s going to be hotter midweek.

I’ve made home-made Pop Tarts and they were delicious; nothing like actual Pop Tarts. (I’ve always hated those things.)

Karen, you say that you don’t know if you’re ready for another cat, but each Saturday Surfing lately has been more and more about cats. (Including that truly disturbing trailer for the ‘Cats’ movie that I can’t un-see, lol.) Maybe you’re more ready than you think? Your next cat won’t be a supermodel kitty, but he/she will be their own wonderful thing to love. You might get a cat with a more introverted job this time. Famous kitty author, perhaps. Or a genius mathematician kitty. I can totally see you getting a cat with a job in a STEAM field. 😉

There were these two cats, just under a year old, two male brothers from the same litter (they look almost identical) that kept coming around my dad’s place since June. They were clearly homeless, street cats, because they were very skinny when they started coming around and very hungry (they were not microchipped; we eventually got them checked later). When they ate, it was like they were starving and did not know when their next meal would be. It was so sad. At the same time, it was like they were well taken care of up to that point. So it was as if they were taken care of up to a point and then abandoned. So it was likely their mother got pregnant, the human parents let the kittens ween, and then they just dumped the kittens on the street to fend for themselves when they were old enough. Truly devastating… but that is just what the story looked like when you put the pieces together, given their age and their condition.

These cats kept coming back every single day so eventually my dad just started “fostering” them and kept them in his mud room, separate from his own cats since they had not seen a vet yet, etc., because they clearly needed care. My dad called the shelters; the shelters wouldn’t take them. They were all at capacity in his city. My dad has the maximum amount of cats allowed in his own house; he couldn’t adopt them. I have commented here before after you lost Tabs with my own story… I have just recently lost my own cat 6 months ago, after 18 years, and have been devastated and severely depressed, completely nowhere near ready to adopt again. I have locked myself away for the last 6 months barely able to function due to my grief over my loss. But I did know down the road I wanted to adopt two boys, two brothers. And here these two boys were, no shelters to take them (they are also 1-year-old black cats, black cats being the least adopted cats, and people also want kittens, so they have a couple things working against them too even if they did get into a shelter), just wandering around my dad’s house for two months with nowhere to go, and me… so not ready to adopt yet but also wanting to save them from a life on the streets. Or worse.

So I did. And believe me, even now, I cannot believe how quickly this happened after my Salem passed. I still do not feel I was “ready” at all. But these cats needed me. I saved them from a shelter life, or street life, or death. It just happened. It was a weird, fate-like situation. It was not planned at all. But it just felt like it was meant to be, in a way. You know? I had a lot of emotions. A LOT. I still do, every day, even though I have only had them for two weeks. But I just went to visit them, sort of like what you have planned with this foster mama, and I fell in love with them.

I am so glad you are opening yourself up to visiting this lovely cat mama and just testing the waters. I was SO hesitant to meet these two cats. It took me WEEKS to even consider it. I was so scared. But I am very glad I did. I ended up with two new family members again. So I wish you the best of luck. I hope my little story inspires you in some way and lets you know that I understand what you are going through. I don’t think I would have EVER felt ready. That is the total truth. I think it would have taken a situation like this, a push, to get me to adopt again. So maybe this is yours? You never know. <3

I hope you had a wonderful visit with the mama and little ones! I tried to get the Hubs to adopt an abandoned kitten a few weeks ago but he’s drawing a firm line. 🙂 She was taken by the mother of a friend of mine so it wasn’t life or death for the poor thing. So many cats need good homes – when/if you’re ready, I don’t think you’ll have trouble finding one in need of rescue. In the meantime, I think you have a good attitude with your open heart and mind.

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
