Retro Roundup: One Year Ago on Makeup and Beauty Blog

WOW! I can hardly believe this blog is more than a year old already. Where does the time go? These were some of my favorite posts from this time last year. 🙂

  • Q&A With Makeup Artist Billy B
“The most challenging aspect of my job is not makeup. It’s all the politics that goes along with it. It’s really a tough business. You are judged by so many things other than your craft. It’s too bad, but it’s the way the world is.”
  • Makeup Events – The American Beauty Tour Opens in San Francisco
“Eye pencils are emollient, which means that after you apply the pencil, it always moves around unless you set it with shadow or powder. You don’t have to set your eyeliner with the same color. Try layering it with different colors to get added dimension.”
  • Product Review – Four Fruit-Scented Lotions for Summer!
“I will be the first person to admit I have no idea what a passionfruit should really smell like. Does it smell like passion? Does it smell like fruit? Who really knows?”
  • Drugstore Product Review – Neutrogena Visibly Even Foaming Cleanser
“I have sensitive, acne-prone skin that is beginning to show the first signs of aging. So I made a trip to Target and bought a couple products to target (ha ha ha) the recent changes in my skin.”
  • Three MAC Must-Haves for the Club – Makeup and Beauty Blog’s Guide to Smart Clubbing, Part 5
“I love Nymphette because it’s got enough color to give my lips punch but not so much that I can’t put it on without a mirror.”

I’m writing this at 5:31AM Hawaii time, typing in the dawn’s early light from the couch in my family’s home. They live at the foot of a lush, jungly mountain that seems like a world away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Honolulu, even though it’s only about 20 miles away. Right now I can barely hear myself think because there’s a constant din of bird calls and songs from outside, louder than I would have thought possible.

I don’t mind the songbirds at all, but the chickens … oh, the chickens. Yes, Mr. Chicken, I know you’re awake, sir. You have made it abundantly clear, lol!

Time to forage for coffee…

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Congratulations on your blog! I’ve been reading it for a looong time ever since I found it. The first thing I read on here was your Paris Hilton interview!

    Hi Glosslizard,

Thanks, homie! I know it’s late your time (almost midnight — 9:00 here right now), but have a good night!

    Hi Ellery,

Thank ya! Oh sweet! I remember that day still very clearly. Paris looked fierce… but had a pretty tow’ up manicure. She was really nice, too.

Hope you had a faboo Saturday. 🙂

    Hi Kris,

It’s been just about a year now; I really love doing it. 🙂

Billy B. is totally nice in person and has some mad makeup skills. He has a brush line that I really like, too.

Have you been having a good weekend? I hope so!

Hi Karen, if you count hunting for a big-enough-but-still-affordable apartment in overcrowded Paris as fun, then yes I did do something fun this weekend. And in between the searches, I did consider getting my hair cornrowed some time this month. Counsels for and against, anyone?

Congrats Karen! You’ve got a superb show running here, and I hope it keeps up for ten years more! 😀
That bird song is awesome… so refreshing. And I’m definitely going to try out new eye-pencil e/s combos. Great tip! But u got guts getting up at five, that too on vacation. I have to get up everyday at six and run for work, so I woke up at noon today 🙂

    Hi Sylvie,

I’ve never had it done, myself. I do like the look of it, though, especially when there’s intricate braiding!

    Hi Mukho,

Aww, thanks! I hope so too. 🙂 I really do love this blog and hope that I can still be doin’ my thang in 10 years!

LOL, I never even wake up at 5:00 when I’m home. Hawaii’s three hours behind so I’m jet lagged. Plus, the birds are crazy loud… especially that damn chicken (he’s making noise right now). Another sound that’s been waking me up is the sound of falling mangos! My in-laws’ backyard is a grove full of mango trees and they are all ripe. They fall all day and night long and you can hear them falling like footballs!

Glad that you slept in today. That always feels nice, doesn’t it? How’s your weekend been so far?

    Hi Dao,

Yup, it’s been a little bit over a year. I guess the biggest advice I could give is to write about a topic that really interests you and engage you. The passion you feel for your topic will be reflected in your writing. The second tip is to write every day. Sounds simple, but it works. Oh, and read everything you can get your hands on!

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
