Retro Roundup: One Year Ago on Makeup and Beauty Blog

June 10th, 2009 by Karen 24 Comments

Can you believe it’s hump day already? I feel like I just woke up on Sunday morning!

This morning I was wondering what we were buzzing about at this time last year, so I spent a few minutes digging through the archives.

Looks like there were a couple new MAC collections up in the mix (Neo Sci Fi and Cool Heat) and some high SPF sunscreens, too.

Do you remember what you were lusting after this time last year?

MAC Cosmetics Face of the Day: Hot Pink and Silver

I was feeling great one Monday about a year ago and decided to go big and bold with a full face inspired by a hot pink lip in this cosmopolitan-inspired look. These lips stand out from a mile away, so I went with a soft pink and silver eye to add some semblance of balance.

Fight Frizz with Fekkai Summer Hair Zero-Humidity Frizz Control

Zero-Frizz isn’t just a hair smoothing spray. It smells great (like coconut and citrus) and even contains a UV protectant Fekkai calls Solarshield, designed to prevent sun damage and lightening. And no alcohol here, which is a big plus, as hair products containing alcohol tend to dry my hair.

Ojon Rub-Out Dry Cleanser: Shower in a Bottle

One big issue I’ve had with dry shampoos in the past is that quite a few brands smell really terrible, but not Rub-Out. It smells like a mix of citrus and baby powder. The product does a great job cutting down on the shine and relieves any scalp itchiness. I wouldn’t say it cleans hair… but it certainly makes it look better!

MAC Cosmetics Neo Sci Fi Face of the Day

Here’s a look I did one morning when I had sun on my mind. I reached for a few brighter-than-bright items from MAC’s Neo Sci Fi collection, but I didn’t really feel like going buck wild with a lot of blending or a wide variety of products with my look and limited myself to just two (!) eyeshadows.

Splurge or Steal: Essie Neon Delivers Chanel Nail Colors for Less

What did you think of Chanel’s Robertson Boulevard limited edition nail polishes? The neon-bright shades in pink, purple, orange and yellow reminded me of 1960’s pop art, but at $25 apiece, they sure weren’t budget friendly.

Stila Sun SPF 15 Bronzing Powder: Here Comes the Sun

When I stare lovingly at Stila’s Sun Bronzing Powder SPF 15 ($28) compact, I always think of Here Comes the Sun, one of my favorite songs by The Beatles. I love the compact’s cheerful design and pretty bronze case. How can something so small put me in such a wonderful mood?

Are You Down with Man Makeup?

How would you feel if the guy in your life started to wear guyliner (aka eyeliner) and power bronze (bronzer)? Younger men these days are more open to wearing makeup — eyeliner, concealer, bronzer — than ever before. How do you feel about man makeup?

Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection 55 for Face and Body: Goodbye Zombie Tan

I’m a sunscreen addict, and most of the high SPF lotions I’ve tried either haven’t absorbed well — I’m talking five minutes of vigorous rubbing to sufficiently cover one arm — or they’ve left a whitish-grey film on my skin, aka zombie tan. Shiseido overcame both issues with this product. It absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a white or grey cast.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

      Hi Ines,

Thank you! And yay for the geminis!

I ended up taking the afternoon off. I went to the mall, did some window shopping, and bought a yellow dress on sale. 🙂

Then El Hub and I went to a sushi restaurant. Afterwards, we got a chocolate cake and a cheesy romantic comedy DVD (What Happens In Vegas. It was low key, but fun.

      What are your birthday plans?

Hi Karen. These are great blogs. I just realized if you click the picture at the top of your blog with the white alligator and flamingo in it it shows a random post, so now I can’t stop clicking. 🙂

It showed me a post about Miss Oops fashion tape that I am now going to get!

That body tape stuff is amazing. I can’t live without it, I swear! It comes in *really* handy for summer.

going to be dancing the night away at a milonga (argentine tango party), maybe followed by salsa after-hours if i still have my feet by the end.

chocolate anything + dvds are awesome, i’m sure it was a great time. i did buy a sundress recently – fuchsia (one of my favorite colors)… and YAY GEMINIS!

      Hi Ines,

Argentine tango is so frickin’ HOT! I wish I could do it in three inch heels… oh baby!

Sundresses always make me smile — I need a fuchsia one in my life. It’s one of my favorite colors, too.

Say hi to your kitty for me next time you see him!

will do. at work and totally bored… boss left without giving me instructions (i’m an exec assistant, so i answer email etc.) – so i’m just chilling out with the office cats, feeding him meow mix treats.

my kitty is four weeks old right now, just started tottering around and tripping over everything. cha cha is totally adorable… can’t wait to get him one of those kitty collars.

      Hi Ines,

I wish I had office kitties with me when I worked as an exec assistant… I bet that’s super cool. Do they ever try to sit on your lap when you’re working?

Speaking of kitty collars, I hope Cha Cha isn’t an escape artist like Tabs. I swear that cat cannot keep a collar on for the life of him. He’s lost so many that I can’t even keep track any more.

    Hi Karen!

I loved that Neo Sci Fi Face of the day! I wish I could pull off Expensive Pink as good as you do~ Hmm… Actually, I might try this look again tonight for dinner I’m having with some friends.

By the way, I was in Benefit on Chestnut St. the other day and I saw the new line of lip glosses! I was in a hurry and just wanted another box of Hoola so I didn’t get to try them 🙁 But I thought I’d let you know, it made me think of your blog! 🙂

    Happy hump day!

one is fat and she’s the lapcat (a very heavy lapcat)… she comes running when the bag of treats is shaking!

the black one likes my purse to sleep in. he also likes being on my shoulder (like a pirate cat).

cha cha is still very young so i’m hoping she’ll get used to having a collar on. you should consider having tabs microchipped if he escapes from collars. cha cha is going to be an indoor only cat, so the id thing doesn’t really matter, it’s just in case he runs loose in the building or something and i can’t find him.

looking to buy a cat tower too – establish good scratching habits… also they look cute playing on it.

      Hi Ines,

Cute! Tabs does the pirate kitty thing, too. Except he’s 14 pounds and not exactly the most dainty of creatures… it gets interesting.

We keep planning to get Tabs microchipped! Hopefully we’ll be moving soon and he’ll be an indoor only cat. I feel guilty about taking away his freedom but I know it’s better for him in the long run.

Kitties look super cute in cat towers, for sure. They seem to like the ones where they can hide!

i feel bad that they can’t be outside too – but the average life span of an indoor/outdoor cat in north america is only about 5 years. cats adapt really well to indoor only living as long as yougive them lots of toys.

at my work this huge cat tower with hammock, hidey hole, and “lookout post” is a huge hit with the kitties. the fat one doesn’t climb very high (she’s old and too heavy), so she usually just sleeps in the hammock or uses the hidey hole on the second level. felix (pirate kitty), climbs all the way up and does his best jack sparrow imitation. super cute. we put catnip on the tower and they went crazy over it!

I still love the hot pink lips, so much! I think I’m going to do a similar look tonight-we are going to the “big city” to see the touring production of Rent. I want to do a black cat eye and hot pink lips….now to figure out what products. I’m think stila cherry crush topped with malibu barbie lip gloss.

Hahah I clicked the link for man makeup and read that your brother and hubby just stare at you when you suggest product – it’s the EXACT same with my bf. He refuuuuses to wear anything moisturizing. Trying to buy him hair gel/pomade was like pulling teeth, and if I even suggest cutting or filing his nails, it’s like battling a wet angry cat. Can’t they tell we just want what’s best? 😉

BTW – Loving the Barbie shirt!

Oh, a kindred soul! Does he clip his toe nails willingly? I swear El Hub’s look downright SCARY… he won’t cut them until I nag him, gross!

    Hey Karen,

I love, love, looove Hoola. It’s great as a bronzer, to warm up the complexion, and also for contouring. I like it most for not only its shade but the fact that it’s matte which sets it aside from other ones I have. 🙂

I’ll probably go over to Benefit sometime soon to get my brows tinted and shaped so I’m going to try the new glosses. Kiss You got my attention from your post, but I also saw this great gold/pale yellow shade similar to Sugarrimmed and Goldyrocks Dazzleglasses.

      Hi Lesley,

I’ve thought about doing the whole brow tinting thing. Mine are black though… I wonder if it’ll make a diff? Oh well, when the white hairs take over my left eyebrow I figure I won’t have any other choice!

Okay, SOLD! Hula is so on my lust list. 🙂

Hmm, man makeup? I know Japanese men openly wear makeup and they look good in it, probably because they know how to apply the products. But I couldn’t date a man who is going to primp with me and talk about the latest eye shadow shades. It’s too weird.
