Quick Makeup Query: I Feel Naked Without [FILL IN THE BLANK]?

October 4th, 2018 by Karen 33 Comments

Mascara, please.

A question for you on this lovely morning. 🙂

For many years, it was under-eye concealer for me, until I recently realized that I could actually live my life without it. (Side note: This was extremely liberating.)

Now I feel completely naked if my lashes aren’t curled and I’m not wearing mascara, because the simple act of applying even a single coat of mascara does more for my eyes than really anything else — more than doing my brows, more than concealer, more than eyeliner.

Basically, when I’m wearing mascara and my lashes are curled, I feel like a legit member of the living, ha ha!

So, yeah, that’s my answer, and I’m sticking to it. 😉

How about you?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Normally when I get a new book, I devour it as quickly as a can, and sometimes I’ll even stay up half the night reading it, but I’m trying something new with Crazy Rich Asians, which I just started. I’m aiming for three chapters a day… Don’t ask me why I decided on three. It just seemed like a nice number, LOL!

Anyway, I’m hoping this will let me savor the story a little bit more? We’ll see if I’m actually able to stick to it…

When you get a new book, do you typically read it fast and furiously, or do you like to pace yourself and spread it out?

To answer the first question, I feel naked without a base of some type on my face. lately, that is all I have been wearing regularly ( a tinted moisturizer with sunscreen). I feel it adds some life to my complexion and protection as well. Having been feeling like wearing much else.
In response to you last question, when i find a book that I am enjoying, i can pretty much read it in a few days. I just borrowed Zack’s copy of Hillbilly Ellegy by J.D. Vance , which was an assigned summer reading for him. I read it in 3 days (it wasn’t that long, but a very interesting read).
So it looks like the holiday collections are starting to appear. Too early fro me!
    Be well!

Hmm do I have to choose one? Because it’s a close tie between filling my brows and curling my lashes/applying mascara! I need to get that book from the library! Just saw the movie, it was so cute!

I need to have color on my lips and if everything else it bare, I’d still feel ok. As for a new book, I’ve been trying to pace myself and take my time but my book choices have been really good lately so I’ve done a lot of binge reading after the kids go down (typically from 11pm-1/2am). I just started “I Let You Go” by Claire Mackintosh and have given myself an hour reading limit so I can take my time and enjoy it.

I feel naked without doing my brows! If I was in a rush and had to choose between brows and breakfast I’d pick my brows!

I have to curl my eyelashes! Mascara is optional after that. But I’ve been getting lash lifts so I’m always ready – it’s amazing!

I feel naked & incomplete without sunscreen. MUST slather on sunscreen with a healthy serving of moisturizer.

Team Mascara, all the way. 🙂 I went to a friend’s house for dinner the other night (just our regular crew of friends forever) and didn’t wear any makeup. I realized that even they hadn’t seen me without mascara in a long, long time. They were all like “are you OK? You look tired”.

I’m a fast and furious reader, too. And I’ve recently stopped reading things I don’t like. I used to feel awful for not wanting to finish a book (same with movies). Now, I’m a bit more strategic with my time.

Hands down eyeliner! I have tried to go without it a couple of times and I feel like I look sick! Just a swipe of black liner in the waterline makes all the difference. I love UD 24/7 in Demolition too!

Definitely eyeliner. Eyeliner makes me look like I at least made some effort.

As to books, it depends on how good it is. Lunch is my sacred reading time. But if it’s a new book from a favorite author, like Kate Morton, or one of my fav series, I’ve been known to read the whole thing in an afternoon.

My go-to must-have is usually mascara, but if I really wanna let my lashes take a break I’ll go with a defined brow & a stronger lip (MAC Marrakesh works fabulously for this). I still feel a little nekked, but at least I feel intentional about it, haha!

And I am hands down a voracious reader. When I was in High School I blew through the 5th Harry Potter book in like, 3 days of non-stop reading (Ah, the perks of being homeschooled and completely ignoring my schoolwork). I usually finish a typical novel in about 2 days or less, even when I’m working. I finished all of The Golden Compass on a flight between NYC and Seattle last year (I admittedly got a head start on the train to the airport). I freakin LOVE reading, though I have to manage the whole “getting lost in the story” thing with like… actually washing my dishes, ha. I have a really soft spot in my heart for pre-teen (or really any level) fantasy lit, so if anyone has any recs… lemme know!

I feel naked without moisturizer and lip balm. I like a well moisturized face.

And when I get a new book, I slam through it. In a day or two.

I feel negligent and uncomfortable if I’m not wearing my sunscreen. It’s an oil free, micronized (invisible) physical sun block but it still gives me a soft glow that makes foundation optional. I can go without everything else, but not my sunscreen.

I am usually in the process of reading two or three books concurrently so how much time I spend reading a particular one just depends on how compelling, entertaining, or informative I think it is. It also depends on my mood and time available. I can easily retain a few different stories in mind so I don’t feel the need to finish one before beginning another and I don’t feel the need to consume a book in one session.

Definitely just a swipe of eyeliner makes a big difference! As for reading, if I really love a book I can’t put it down. Can read it in a day! Except for The Historian which took me a bit to get through, had to slow read that one.

Concealer and lip color. It used to be concealer and mascara but lately I’m going very light on mascara and I like how my eyes look with less mascara on them. Go figure.

      Hi Lorraine,

Yes, they’re the Kate Spade Johnna glasses in Havana Pink! I got them last year and I loooove them. Funny thing, though. So many people say I look like Ali Wong whenever I wear them!

I feel naked without sunscreen. Copious amounts of sunscreen. If I don’t wear sunscreen my skin starts getting red and blotchy and melasma and ugh.
Some books I pick up and devour quickly. Others I slog through one chapter at a time until I eventually give up. Some of the time it has to do with how much available time I have to read and how much exhaustion I’m willing to put up with the next day if I stay up late reading. Other times it has to do with the writing style of the author. Right now I’m trying to read “Double Vision” a biography about the Menil family. I love their museum in Houston and I love some of the snippets my daughter told me about them. But the book is written in such a dry, academic style I just can’t get through the slog to get to the good parts. I feel like this book could have been half as long and twice as interesting. Sigh.

I made a decision a few years back to not waste my time with books that I’m not feeling. Life is too short. I used to power my way through books that I was “Eh” about but one day I woke up and decided that I’m not going to do that anymore, and you know, it’s been freeing!

    Hi Karen ,
I got it down to a quick base , blush , coffee eyeliner and mascara .
I use a Revlon highlighter that gives a great sheen to my shadow and blends it altogether .
Then a matt maybelline nude lip .
I can do this in three notes !

Mascara. I don´t even need to curl my lashes, but: Mascara

And these days I read whenever I get the chance, which usually doesn´t add up to more than three chapters a day with the constant interruptions.

I feel naked without eyebrows! Especially since I did a gloss on my hair that turned out much darker than planned, my blond brows look grey next to the darker red bake! I can’t wait for it to fade.

So my stylist friend Alis told me that if you want to fade hair color one of the fastest ways you can do it is with Dawn dish soap. A few years ago I put in temporary pink hair spray color, and I just couldn’t seem to get it out, no matter what I did. Turns out the shampoo I was using, Oribe, was helping to keep the color in place. LOL. Silly me.

Hope you’re having a nice weekend so far! Doing any circus stuff?

So this comment brings everything together! I got back from circusing just a little bit ago – we have a student showcase in 2 weeks and I was practicing! I needed to shower but read this comment first and went and grabbed the Dawn from by the sink, LOL!

It’s supposed to fade in 6 or 8 weeks, I’m just impatient. I do wash my hair most days though, so hopefully closer to the short end! Next time I’ll just get a clear gloss because I do like the shine.

I hope it works! I never got to try it on my hair because I was so scarred by the pink color incident. I’m thinking that you might need to put in some leave in conditioner, though, just in case the Dawn is drying.

Oh, is this the student showcase with the Medusa hair?

My skin usually isn’t great, and I have really pale skin and lips. I must have some kind of foundation and setting powder, blush, mascara, and lip color. That said, I’m ok going out with no makeup on, if that’s what I’m in the mood to do.

Depends on the time of year, honestly. I guess the answer is always lipgloss or lipstick, but it’s also tightlines and mascara every season except summer. I never know when jumping in our pool will sound good, and I don’t want to have to take off eye makeup to do it! Pool raccoon eyes are the worst.
