Paint Your Toes in the Open Thread

June 27th, 2010 by Karen 112 Comments

Tabs and I just got back from our walk and WOW! — it’s hotter than hades out there. Not that I’m complaining. I’m glad it gets hot here. Mill Valley, the town we lived in before, was closer to San Francisco and the chilly marine layer. Summers only lasted about two seconds in the middle of September, so “YEA!” for being able to wear shorts and sundresses in June!

I don’t have much lined up for the rest of the afternoon, other than making that homemade ice cream I mentioned (the strawberries are macerating as we speak!) and giving myself an at-home pedi while we chat in the open thread. The Essie Pretty Edgy I’ve been wearing for two weeks is on its last legs.

In case you’re a new reader, here’s the scoop on the open thread: it’s basically unstructured time to chat about anything we like in the comments at the bottom of this post — food, clothes, books, movies, pets, relationships, whateva! Please feel free to pop in and out as much and as often as you like.

A few questions to start the party…

Do you like to do your own nails, or do you prefer to have them done at a salon?

I do like to treat myself to a professional mani/pedi every once in a while because it feels great and looks good, but I generally prefer to do my own. I’m really picky. Plus, my mom got a terrible infection once at a nail salon a few years back, and it traumatized me.

Can you parallel park?

Yes, ma’am! I got pretty good at it back when I lived in San Francisco, and at my prime I could do it on fairly steep hills (both facing up AND down the street). But I’m rusty now. Living out here in the burbs dulled my edge, LOL!

What’s your favorite thing about summer?

Besides the sun? I love the extra hours of daylight. Great for picture taking and walking cats.

See you in a few! 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

    Hi everyone,

The summer heat and humidity is giving me a daily beauty meltdown. Does anyone have any suggestions (tips and/or products) to help me keep my makeup in place during these hot summer days?

      Hey Terri,
I just started using a makeup primer (Smashbox Photofinish Primer, to be exact) and I’ve noticed a difference. The primer acts like a magnet for makeup and totally keeps it in place. Hope this helps! Happy Sunday everyone!

      Hi Terri,

In general I try to go lighter when it heats up so I don’t have to worry about makeup melting off when I start to sweat. If I’m just running around doing errands, I’ll fill in my brows, throw on some tinted moisturizer, cover up the dark circles with Time Balm concealer, put on some waterproof mascara and then finish off with some gloss.

Oh, and if I remember to I’ll throw on some primer beneath everything! That seems to help lock stuff in place.

Would love to hear about everybody else’s tips/tricks.

I am teaching a foundations of education course to incoming graduate students. It is actually kind of fun because the students are usually pretty excited about getting into the classroom. Also, even though the class is 5 days a week for 6 weeks, the days are pretty short (I’m typically done by noon), so that means I can go to my other job and do my own work.

That sounds like a great schedule. It must be a pleasure to teach students who are enthusiastic about the subject, I bet!

      hii 🙂
i like to keep my makeup light during the summer days. its decreases the chance (and amount) of having my makeup melting all over my face. 😛 I usually stick to a tinted moisturizer, concealer, maybe a swipe of eyeshadow/mascara and a blush to give me that light flush. Lately, i’ve been lovingg my new nyx cream blushes to give me that flush on my cheeks! but i have yet to test them out against the hot summer days 😀

Ohh i also like to keep a mist/spray on me during summer. It helps refresh your makeup, hydrates your skin and feels sooo good when you spray it on 😀 and yes.. primers help a TON in keeping your makeup on! good luck!

    Yey for another open thread!!
    1. I used to go on manicures but I change my nail polish too often+ I just can’t sit still for 40 min and be pampered. Though I hate hate hate doing pedicures, and my toes are always, be summer or winter painted red (for the last couple months my fav red is Chanel Dragon)

    2. Oh man. I’ve had a drivers license for 5 years and I still refuse to drive and take a bus. It’s not that I’m afraid it’s just…I can’t be bothered. I did try to get ‘back on track’ so to speak, a couple months ago…got truck toad back home. Me+cars=disaster.

    3. Going to my island house and doing n-o-t-h-i-n-g. And this is the last summer I’ll have that freedom since I finished university and have to wait till September to apply for an internship. It’s so lovely-wake up at 10, go for a swim, have fish for lunch that was caught that morning, potatoes from your garden, with your grandmas olive oil, and wine made on the island opposite to yours. Lots of family around, later a long siesta, coffee and then swim again, walking around and do nothing but watch the starry sky and peaceful sky and yachts around. Sure, after a week I feel like Robinson Crusoe and want to swim back to the land but still…I dream of it every winter!

Oh and on the make up level- this new Chanel collection will be the death of me, thank the lord it won’t be in our stores for at least 1 month (probably 2). And those 2 Benefits…wow, just wow.

      Hey Sonja,
I know where you’re coming from regarding driving. I actually failed my drivers test and just never went back to get it because I never liked driving anways. So for now I’m pretty content taking the bus but should I ever live somewhere without a bus system I’m going to have to bite the bullet and learn to drive again. And ditto on the Benefit pallettes!

Your island house sounds amazing. I wanna hang out with you there, LOL!

I don’t think I’ve ever had homemade olive oil… the thought of it makes my stomach rumble.

So anyway, regarding the car… I think maybe you should just start driving around your neighborhood at first again. Then, as you get more comfortable behind the wheel, use the car to run small errands, like going to the grocery store. Soon you’ll be a driving pro!

What do you think you might get from Chanel fall?

Oh we usually only eat homemade olive oil (kind of easy when every where you walk you run into an olive tree, I have one in my garden that’s suppose to be a 1000y. old!).

Well that’s exactly why I never got into driving in the first place- I live 15 minutes from the centre and when I’m there it’s easier to walk around- and with all the parking, rush hours and the fact that during the driving you can really sense that Croatian people are indeed Balkans…I really never felt that I needed to. So I just spared myself the trouble-although I know that the time will come when I’ll somehow be forced by circumstances to start driving again…

Oh beloved Chanel- I’ll for sure be buying that nail polish (apparently a mix of Vendetta&Particuliare, hellooo!) and Cassis eye pencil…not sure about Vert Khaki eyeshadow, since I love green but always just go for eyeliner/kohl look.

Wow, amazing! I bet the fresh, homemade kind is delicious… oh my, I’m hungry, LOL!

So, I totally get what you mean regarding driving in the center of the city. It’s totally the same way in San Francisco. You’re better off taking a bus or just parking your car in one place and then walking to get all your errands done. It might be still good to keep practicing around your ‘hood though… you never know if you’ll have to drive for an emergency! Plus, it’s very empowering to know that you can always take yoruself from point a to point b if you need to.

Vert Khaki’s cool, but you probably don’t need it if you have similar shades. The Cassis liner, though, is a MUST!

    Hey Karen!
Funny you asked about the at-home pedi/mani, I actually just bought a new base coat and polish. I purchased Essie’s base coat, and then bought their polish in Flirt; really similar to Cajun Shrimp by OPI, which is on its last legs for me 🙁 So far so good with the base coat! And I almost always do my own nails and toes–saves me money and I don’t feel guilty if I want to change the colour!
Yes, I CAN parallel park.. I just choose not to… LOL
Favourite thing about summer? Being able to relax, soak up the sun, and catch up on my reading. Speaking of, I know you’re a fan of the show True Blood Karen, have you read any of the Sookie Stackhouse books? Just finished the first one in the series today.. SO good! I definitely recommend.
Any big plans for the rest of the week? I know your Fourth of July is coming up!

      Hi Haley,

Oh, did you get the Essie First Base coat? I love that one!

As for the Sookie books, I made it through about four, then I got a little tired of them. The great thing about the show is how they change the books SO MUCH so you never know what’s going to happen. Are you excited about tonight’s ep?

Plans for the rest of the week, hmm… I really just want to be careful with time management. I tend to dilly-dally and take FOREVER and a day to do tasks, so I’m going to try (!) to put myself on a strict deadline. No plans for the fourth yet… how about you?

Well I’m in Canada, so we have Canada day on July 1st! So on Thursday I’ll probably go out with friends to celebrate. Good luck with the time management, I need to work on that too… oh, and procrastination. Thats a big one 🙂

I lack the coordination to do a good job on my nails by myself, but I usually paint them at home because I’m a poor graduate student and don’t have the funds/time to go to the salon on a regular basis.

    Can you parallel park?
No; I remember learning to parallel park for my driving test, but I don’t think I’ve actually done it since then.

What’s your favorite thing about summer?
I live in Boston, and I think that the population shrinks by half when summer comes around :). I also love being able to visit my famiy

The heat comes and goes. Tomorrow it is supposed to be in the 90s, but then the highs will be in the 70s later this week. What makes summer in Boston a little tricky is that 1) I don’t have a car, so I do a lot of walking/waiting for the train, which isn’t much fun in hot weather, and 2) air conditioning isn’t always the rule here 🙁

I really didn’t do much this weekend… I’m still recovering from my cold so I spent a lot of time just chilling and watching bad TV. I’ve spent the weekend running errands and frantically knitting a baby blanket for a friend of mine. I am hoping to give it to her at the baby’s christening on Saturday, but my lack of knitting prowess might keep me from my goal.

And I need major hair help!!!

Got my hair cellophaned w/ red brunette w/ the intention of of having my hair reflect red in the sun, but instead I now have maroon hair. On top of that, I got a perm that the hair lady combed through to loosen my curls. I now have burned/fried/dry hair that is way too straight and red. I am so freaking depressed!! What to do? I have bawled my eyes out already today. On top of all that, I am seeing ma familia for the first time in 7 years next Friday. Sigh. Stress.

Don’t get me wrong I love being pampered at the Salon every now and then yet it can add up. Plus I like tend to change my nail polish color quite often…I am currently sporting OPIs “ogre the top blue” on my nails and “feeling hot hot hot” on my toes.

I can most definitely parallel park thanks to my dad. I would not be allowed to drive if I did not pass his test (much harder than any DMV one). I am now Forever thankful for that!

Hey ladies! In a little over two weeks I’m off for a month long volunteer trip to South Africa. I don’t want to take a lot with me, but there will be a few instances were I want to dress up a bit. I was thinking of taking a tinted moisturizer, a powder, concealer, mascara and one travel friendly palette with some pretty basics. Any ideas on products that are portable and stand up to heat and humidity? (It’s winter there, but still pretty warm.) I’m looking for a palette with blush and eyeshadow that will give me a few options. 🙂

Brandy, that sounds very exciting! You might want to take a powder that has SPF in it. I am currently using BareMinerals Natural Sunscreen, which gives me light coverage and sun protection. I think that Benefit’s Hello Flawless also has SPF in it.

Her name is Guppy she’s 3 months. Mostly gray with white one her feet and chest. She really loves to play and was REALLY excited when she saw Stink lol She keeps trying to play with him but he’s NOT having it. Ya, he’s pretty territorial especially when it comes to his beloved cat condo lol Luckily they’re both sleeping so finally so time to just veg!

lol that’s what my bf kept saying too and I was really skeptical because I know how much of a grouch Stink can be, but she’s really sweet. Hopefully they become friends sometimes it seems like he wants a cat friend since he stares at the neighbor’s cat so much! I got her from the Orange County shelter. Its hard to say no when you see all those sweet faces just wanting to come out of those kennels.

Yeah, if we end up getting a kitty it’ll definitely be a shelter or a rescue cat, too. 🙂

Are both Stink and Guppy going to be indoor cats?

The shelter kitties were so sweet ESPECIALLY the older ones. I really wanted one of the older ones but my bf said no because Stink really wouldn’t accept an older/bigger kitty. Tear..

Ya they’ll both be indoors. Though I will try to get Guppy to walk on a leash/harness hopefully. Stink is too afraid of strangers I tried. But I think I’ll get him one of those Kittywalk Systems..those enclosed outdoor spaces because he is interested in being outside long as there’s no humans lol or maybe even a stroller for walks if he permits. Lol I’m such a crazy cat lady!

I have parallel parked twice in my entire life. The first time, at my test, I had the mean instructor. I did not use the accelerator pedal AT ALL. The mean instructor kept telling me I could accelerate but I did not! Miraculously, I passed.

The second time was a disaster that we won’t speak about. I didn’t hit anything, but I ended up switching with my little sister. And she parked it efficiently.

Also, I just had pie. I really love pie.

Hi Karen, funny you should ask this! I just got my first cuticle trimmer + files at CVS in the attempt to do a DIY manicure. I definitely prefer to have my nails done at the salon – mainly because I’m horrible at doing my own mani/pedis. Especially my right hand.

What’s your favorite thing about summer? Warm weather, although I live by the beach and it’s been cloudy the past week. What’s up with that?

Can I parallel park? Depends. Most of the time no, not unless it’s a REALLY big gap and if my husband is in the car with me, then definitely no. He makes me so nervous.

    1) I do my own nails because I can’t stand to pay for something so simple and temporary. 🙂
    2) I parallel park well because I used to live in Philadelphia!
    3) My favorite thing about summer is wearing dresses all the time! I am obsessed with dresses.

We don’t have very long summer days here in Houston, but it is a fair trade-off for still having relatively long days in the fall and winter when the temperature is bearable.

The best part of summer is painting my toe nails and showing them off. Also I love the scent of jasmine at night from my neighbours’ garden. After reading one of your previous postings, I checked out The Hunger Games and I have enjoyed reading it. I can’t put it down and anticipate reading the next books.

I always do my own nails – I am super cheap and don’t like spending money on stuff I can do myself (but I am lazy so I usually just do sheer colors).

I lived in San Francisco for 8 years so YES I can parallel park! But I haven’t had to do it in so long that I’ve probably forgotten how to do it. I still have nightmares about trying to park on this one super steep hill downtown near Nob Hill – scary!

I love summer because I can wear flip flops and go to the pool. And here in Vegas it’s 85 degrees at night, so I can wear shorts 24/7.

I absolutely love doing my own nails! I haven’t gone to a salon in ages, really! I find it relaxing, I can change colours as many time as I wish without wasting any money AND since I’m a perfectionist, I can have it my way! My nails are done so well that everybody thinks they’re fake!!!

I can parallel park, but this is no big deal in Italy, everybody can, more or less. Also, here 99.9% people drive a stick shift, it’s the norm! 😀

Fav thing about summer –> definitely the longer days (I need sunlight in order to feel good!) and the sea!!! the beach, the sea, the tan… AAHHHHH!

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
