How Often Do You Coordinate Your Nails With Your Makeup and/or Outfit?

July 2nd, 2014 by Karen 27 Comments

Not very often, but I feel like I should do it more because I like the look, and it’s a fun idea, but I dunno… It takes a level of planning and organization that — well, let’s just say — I sometimes lack. 🙂

I’ll do it every once in a while, though, like for a special occasion, or when it just randomly works out, but I think the last time I purposefully coordinated (because sometimes I do it by accident and don’t even realize for hours) my nails, outfit and makeup was for my wedding back before the last ice age, LOL!

I usually do my nails in the beginning of the week, so to match stuff after that, they have to match with my nails.

I feel like I could/should be more thoughtful about the whole thing because nails can totally take a look to the next level.

How about you? How often do you coordinate your nails with your makeup and/or outfit?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Happy hump day.

Almost never. I think of my nails as a separate entity. Right now they look like fire. Maybe I should do a fiery eye shadow look in the next few days?

      Hi Trisha,

That’s mostly how I feel about my nails, too. They’re a separate entity, but I still think it would be fun to kind of have a plan sometimes that involves bringing everything together.

Also, your game! Congratulations, that is so cool! I can’t believe you made a game in such a short time. It reminds me of the old Zelda and Final Fantasy games.

I don’t like my nails too matchy-matchy. In the words of What Not To Wear, “It doesn’t match, it goes.” That’s sort of my philosophy. I have to keep them painted because I used to have a really bad nail-biting habit and keeping them nice prevents me from biting, so I probably paint them 2-3 times a week, and try to do a nice soak/mani once a week.

Hey Karen! I am never able to do that! I am alway so short of time, I’d swipe anything and rush out. Thats one reason I stick to nudes on the nails and lips.. that goes with everything!

I rarely coordinate my nail color and outfit, but I would do it for a special occasion. I admit, I don’t always give my nails top priority. On a daily basis, if my clothes are not wrinkled and (relatively) free of cat hair, then I’m good go. 🙂 If my pedicure is chipped, then I’ll go with closed toe shoes.

I don’t coordinate my lips and nails THAT often, but feel like it’s a fun look to do – especially in the summer, if you’re feeling minimal. A hot red/orange nail with similar bold lips is a real kick-ass (but not too cray) statement! I’m totally crushing on Essie’s Meet Me At Sunset for that look right now. It’s the purrrrfect summer color 🙂

I never do it intentionally but with how you are crazy rocking this, I just might! What do you have on your nails?

I almost never coordinate. I’m lucky to find time to paint my nails, so matching them is mostly for special events. I always have the intention of taking better care of my nails…maybe if I say it out loud again, it will happen? 😉

No I just pick whatever color tickles my fancy at the moment lol. I’ll probably match them for a special event but I don’t think I could keep up regularly though

Never. I choose my nail color for that week based on mood or upcoming events. I think having to coordinate nails and makeup is a bit much. I agree with the comment about being too “matchy matchy”. I doubt anyone truly notices anyway. It is just a bit over the top.

Hmmm….almost never! The last time I did that was hmmm….probably for my wedding 2 years ago! It’s so fun to NOT match colours that I don’t even try! What colour do you have on your ring finger in this pic Karen?

When I was on maternity leave I matched my nails to my outfits quite often… now that i’m back at work I just don’t have the time. But I still do it for special occasions or if I can find a minute on a Friday night to do them, I’ll try to match them for an outfit i’m planning to wear Sunday. As for makeup I keep it pretty neutral so it matches everything. 🙂

    Hi Karen,

I am not a very matchy matchy person. I always paint my nails, eyes, and toes different colors.

On another note: I love how you did your eyeliner in this blog! Beautiful!

    Sincerely,

    Sarah

Ummm, never. I love using my nails as another accessory- separate from my attire- to spice up my outfit with fun/bold colors. During the rare moments that my nails do match my outfit, it’s a complete accident. Lol.

I would love if I could match my nails to my outfits. But that would require a. Me planning outfits (three kids under 4 yrs, yeah right!) b. me matching my toe and fingernails to each other (they complement but don’t match) c. Me having time to change polish to aforementioned requirements.

I remember watching that Kimora Lee Simmons show when she hired an assistant and the girl showed up the first day with peep-toe shoes. Kimora said something like, “your shoes are red but your polish looks sort of pink. Does your polish not match your shoes?”

I think my jaw literally dropped. I mean, this girl is probably NOT getting paid enough to get a polish change to match her daily shoes!!! Then I felt bad that I would be the “other kind” of assistant that shows up in old dirty sweatpants and t shirt from high school. Hehehehe….I’d leave my fabulosity for at home!

What a cute and unexpected eye/nail pairing! Gosh, I don’t think I’ve ever paired my nails and eyes. Maybe I should, lol! You’ve given me something to think about. Now with my outfit, that’s another story. Yes, I have, but then I don’t take the polish off. I live with it till it chips and has to come off.

Honestly, I almost never coordinate my nails with my makeup or outfit, if I do, it’s typically a happy accident! One time I was wearing Essie Chinchilly, and I happened to put on a cardigan that matched it nearly exactly — I really liked the look, so maybe I should try this purposefully some time!

I do like to coordinate things, but I rarely paint my nails with the express purpose of being able to coordinate them with my outfit or makeup! I’m not that…coordinated. Geddit? ;-D

Fairly often with my outfit actually. I get bored of my nail polish super easily, and plan my work outfits in advance, so maybe once I week I coordinate them. For example, I have a pretty mint coloured dress, and I wear it with RBL’s Fire Queen; sometimes I do a quick floral lead-lighting stamping manicure with a floral skirt I love. My students love it when I match!

I don’t coordinate nails with makeup, but I think in nails as a complement of my outfit. Something like a scarf or a necklace, so I try to make them not exactly match, but coordinate in some way.

Of course, that’s easier to do with neutral shades, but nail polishes chip like crazy on me so I have to change my manicure very often and it’s easier to choose similar shades even with bright colors.

When I polish my nails, they always match my makeup since both are neutral with basically no color! 🙂

I think your look above is awesome for summer, though. The icy blues make it feel less hot and humid!

I do coordinate nail/toe color for special occasion outfits. Other than that I’m more a “what color do I feel like at this very moment”.
I will say that I have an essie color called “find me an oasis” (looks a lot like what you’re wearing) which is a very pale almost white blue and I swear that color goes with almost everything in my wardrobe. I love it!
I also never put the same color on fingers and toes at the same time.

I’ve never been a matchy-matchy person (seems like the majority here) so I go with one of two standards – either a simple Perfect Formula Pink Gel Coat with longer nails, which, though a bit thick, kinda expensive, and can chip here and there, makes your nails look SO healthy, pink, and glowing ! Or, occasionally I’ll spring for a “real” mani and do a super-shiny vinyl black on shorter, slightly square nails. I do the same vinyl black on my toes year-round. I’d love to try more color, but a coral, mint, or bright yellow just seem so unnatural on my hands – maybe it’s my age or skin-tone ? I’m naturally fair but tan like a champion, and there’s just “something” about either the black or the Pink Gel that sets off a copper glow so well !
