Neutrals or Brights? (Assuming That You Have To Pick One or the Other)

January 20th, 2016 by Karen 42 Comments

neutrals or brights
Neutrals or brights?

Quick! Just go with your gut… Don’t overthink it, because, ya know, with hard-hitting makeup questions like this one (totally kidding), your first reaction is usually the truest, best one.

Anyway, SURPRISE! — I’m gonna have to go with neutrals, only partly because I’ve been wearing them so much lately, but that’s just a phase. I do also wear brights, just not as often lately.

I have to be in the mood and the right mindset for brights, but I do like a jolt of bright color, especially when it’s set against neutrals, like a bright teal liner or a hot pink lip in combo with beiges and browns elsewhere.

What about you? Neutrals or brights? (Assuming that you have to pick one or the other.)

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

mbb-maternity-help-buttonP.S. OK, WOW! Your applications for the MBB Maternity Leave/Blog Internship? There have been more than 100 applicants so far (!!!). Friday (Jan. 22nd) is the last day for submissions, and then I’ll start going over all of them closely with Tabs, which will probably take me about a week.

I’m doing this whole thing because I’ll need your help during my first few months with Baby Girl, but I’m also committed to helping you, however I can, in your blogging/vlogging endeavors, whether that means helping you come up with topics for your blog, photography tips, how to come up with post titles, discussing secret (not that they’re secrets) blogging tips, helping you maximize your blogging income, answering technical questions for you, or just being a second opinion — someone off of which to bounce ideas.

My time will be limited early on, but we’ll make it work, if you’re interested, and I hope you are. I’m sorry if you’ve asked me a question by email regarding your application and I haven’t replied, but I’ll try to soon. If for any reason there’s been a problem with your resume/application packet, like an attachment not getting through my email, don’t worry. We’ll work it out.

I’ll give you the lawyer answer: it depends! On the east coast — neutrals. In Hawaii — brights! Or, why choose…. neutral overall with a a shot of bright, like that amazing look when NARS makeup first came out, the smokey brown eyeshadow and bright fuschia lip. That image is still burned into my memory…

Bright eyed girl here! blues, purples and golds are my favorites. But I’ve learned to respect neutrals lately too but only with a bright lip. I love color!

For me it has always been neutrals, especially on the eye. I will sometimes do a brighter lip or cheek, but nothing too out there. BTW, if you’re someone with dry, dehydrated skin and you are near a Blue Mercury store, they have an exclusive line, Lune + Aster. I bought the CC Cream/Tinted Moisturizer 50 SPF. The coverage is light to medium and is very hydrating, especially for more mature skin.

I gotta go with neutrals because with bright colors, you can scare the neighborhood kids. Just kidding! I like wearing bright colors when I’m going out at night, but if I had to choose one over the other, then definitely neutrals because they’re easier to wear any time of the day.

It totally depends, but I’ve started to incorporate brights into my daily routine. During the week – Usually Neutrals all the way. At night and on the weekends – I try to go Bright or at least neutral with blue/green/purple eyeliners or inner corner highlights, etc.

I’ll go with neutrals. It’s hard to make a mistake with neutrals! I like good brights too but it takes more work to combine colors that will work.

Absolutely brights! I’m somewhat of an artist, so I love different colors, and the brighter the better! I wish bright palettes were released more often (like neutrals!) I pretty much only wear neutrals to work.

Neutrals, but I do like to add colored eyeliner now and again. Lately I’ve been wearing blue eyeliner with neutral eyeshadow. I’m so tired of the dreary, rainy weather (even though I know we need it) and adding some color makes me happy.

I like both! I think the neutrals are a little more you. I think you need to do an in-between look!

For me, I like neutrals and jewel tones. Brights are great on my lips but look out of place elsewhere. I do really like them on others though.

Glad to hear you have a wide selection of applicants, myself included :p

I’d go with brights; every time I wear a bright pink lip or a colorful eyeliner, I receive compliments. I prefer a more natural look overall with the brights as an accent.

Good luck with all the applications!

Neutrals! But BRIGHT lipstick. Lol. I tend to use bright shadows or liners as accent colors along my water line. But I’ll wear a bold/bright lippie anytime of the year. I’m a neutral eyeshadow lover because neutrals go with anything & I don’t have to think too hard about color combinations. Soooo excited your inbox has been FLOODED. Just an indication of how much you’re loved. Btw- the newest to be released MAC limited edition (MAC x Chris Chang) combo has a PURPLE BLUSH! Well, at least I assume it’s blush. I’m gonna be ALL. OVER. IT!!!!! 🙂

I’m a brights person, but but it’s definitely possible overdo them. I think if you do bright eyes you should do nude lips or vice versa, in most cases.

Neutrals, for sure! As much as I enjoy looking at brights in the pan, my brushes seldom dip into them. Alas, the “fun” eyeliner pencils sit capped and neglected. (Aw, poor babies…I should show them some love!)

Brights! I just really love color. Also, there are very few neutral lipsticks that look even OK on me, and I can count on one hand the number that are actually flattering.

With my hooded eyes that are hiding behind glasses, I’ll even wear bright eye shadow and bright lipstick at the same time; I just make sure they complement each other, and keep blusher/highlighter/contour or bronzer light and subtle.

Of course, a big jumble of brights isn’t flattering, either. You need a lovely neutral setting to put them in. Unless you’re really young with really flawless skin and can just wear color makeup (no base), you can’t have a stash of brights only!
