FYI, Anthropologie is where it’s at if you need a $500 muumuu (or mu’umu’u)!
I wish I could say I was kidding, but I’m not. While I was there other day plundering the sale rack, I spotted this bright, silky green caftan on sale for $300 (marked down from $500 though!).
Needless to say, the current status of Muumuu Quest at Tabs the Cat Industries LLC is still DSM (Desperately Seeking Muumuu).
(Pause here for OHEMGEE face.)
Doesn’t the print look like an abstract painting of peacock feathers? Or an abstract kelp forest in the ocean?
I think it’s lovely, and the silk felt fabulous (seriously, when does one get the chance to try on a $500 muumuu?), but there’s no way in hell I’m spending that much for a dress to knock around the house in.
Mind you, the Mrs. Roper-ness levels on it were very, VERY high. Helen would be totally feeling it. It looked terrible on me, though, because the drawstring waist hit at a weird spot, the sleeves were a little too drape-y, and the neckline was way too wide.
It was a hard no.
This muumuu-esque dress by Maeve has navy tassels, oh-la-la!
It’s like a 21st century updated version of a muumuu. I loved the way it flowed when I twirled in it (vitally important). Unfortch, it was $200 (and wasn’t on sale), but if it had been under $100, I would’ve seriously considered it.
Too bad this next Mrs. Roper dress by Maeve wasn’t longer, because if it had been, I would’ve said YES TO THE DRESS! It was on sale for $99 (originally $168).
Oh, and even though this maxi dress by Lazybones looks nothing like a muumuu or a caftan, I gave it a go because of the print. On sale for $135 (originally $168).
It fit OK, but I didn’t love it. Also…NOT A MUUMUU.
Wherefore art thou, muumuu? Wherever you are, you shall be mine!
To be continued…
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
I can tell your hunt for the muumuu is real because you’re willing to run the gamut from Ross to Anthropologie. I’m so removed from fashion, as you know, that I’m literally stunned by those prices. HAHA! I liked the patriotic, shortest one best. But only if it was in the Ross price range. 🙂
Next time you come to Honolulu, let’s hit Manuheali’i and Kealopiko. I think you’d like it. ❤️?
You look super cute in the first dress. You could slide by and say it’s a short muumuu!
I think you need to hit up etsy or ebay and try to find something vintage maybe? Or take a gamble on one of the cheapo ones on Amazon.
Girl, I agree with Megan, you gotta hit up the thrift stores! Some of the best caftans I’ve found for belly dance costume cover ups have come from Buffalo Exchange/Goodwill/vintage clothing places.
Learn to sew, girl, learn to sew. A basic muumuu wouldn’t be hard and once you mastered it, the possibilities are endless. I could totally see a cat muumuu in your future.
$500 – heck, even $300 – would pretty much have me set for an entire season from the Goodwill! But then I’ve always preferred second-hand. More variety to say nothing of the prices.
I like the black and white one with the little colored detailing and those little tufts.
Oh dear, I can´t even imagine a clothing item I´d spend 500 $ on, let alone something for around the house.

I have enjoyed reading your quests to find a mumu seriously, every day when I check your blog I’m like hmm wonder if she found one yet??? LOL just wondering though have you checked out Asa Kaftans by Asa Soltan from Shahs of Sunset??? Not sure if you’re familiar with her but I have always loved her bohemian luxe style and her line looks like that but not super expensive.
I remember the first time I visited the islands back in the 50’s. It was all about the muu-muus, shells, and leis 🙂 The muu-muus were delightful and cheap. The prints were tropical without being garish and the garments were really well made. Between my mom and I we probably had a dozen. Then, Hawaii became a state, tourists started arriving, and prices went up.
I loved this post! It was fun, and your daughter’s face–what can I say? So sweet!
Here’s an Etsy shop an online acquaintance got a caftan from. She was very pleased with it: https://www.etsy.com/shop/ADifferentWeave?ref=l2-shopheader-name
Reading this post was a highlight of my day! Thanks for taking your digital girlfriends shopping with you! It was so fun.
Surprisingly, there are some cute caftans on QVC. Very inexpensive.
Yes, I got a great Carole Hochman one on QVC .
I don’t understand why one would need a muumuu, unless she was dressing up as Mrs. Roper for Halloween.
Are they au courant right now?
Even though I’m not quite getting it, I wish you luck and fun on your hunt. It’s always fun to have something to hunt for, isn’t it?
What happened to the young one that she has a bandaged knee?

It’s hot and because my house doesn’t have air conditioning so I’ve been wanting something to wear that’s breezy and loose! Also I think they look cool. 🙂
The lil’ bean was running and fell on Father’s Day, and the “boo boo on her knee” is a big deal around here lately.
I love the 1st one on you, so cute.. enjoyed your shopping outing with your sidekick ?
My friend just did a great story on caftans – I bought two of the ones she recommends here:

Have you looked at muumuus/caftans by Shahida Parides? Her pieces can get pretty expensive but you can find them on Zulily and Nordstrom Rack for around $100. The prints are beautiful and bright (if that’s what you’re into) and you can usually wear the same piece in different ways. I have a Parides dress I love and you get a lot of bang for your buck.
Hi Bailey,
I haven’t! Just looked up her stuff at Nordstrom Rack online and it’s cool. Thank you! 🙂
