Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 634

July 13th, 2020 by Karen 32 Comments

Have a sweet week, my friend!

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start. 🌻

The Perfume Edition!

    1. Scent (or scents) you’ve been wearing the longest?

MAC Turquatic (13 years!), Clinique Happy (almost 20), Chanel Mademoiselle (10), Byredo Gypsy Water (6 years)

    2. A perfume or scent you associate with fond memories?

All the scents from The Body Shop remind me of my early 20s, the phase in my life when I had just graduated from college and moved back to the Bay Area. It full of lots of highs and lows — big adjustments and lot of bumps in the road, but at the same time, I had so much fun. I wore pretty much anything you could find at The Body Shop, but my favorites were Moonflower, Dewberry, Ananya and Indian Gardenia. I wish I kept those old bottles, just so I could smell them again!

    3. A scent that reminds you of summer?

Bobby Brown Beach or Coppertone Waterbabies Sunscreen (they pretty much have the same scent notes, ha!)

    4. What does your youth smell like?

The Body Shop Moonflower, YSL Paris, Gucci Envy, Gucci Rush, CK One (I didn’t wear this, but everyone around me did), Dior J’Adore 😊

    5. Did you ever go through a body splash phase?

For sure! I wore a lot of Bath & Body Works Green Clover and Aloe back in the day.

    6. A perfume you like (or liked) that suddenly everyone seemed to be wearing?

Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue ❤️

    7. A scent you’ve been wearing a lot lately?

Victoria’s Secret Amber Romance…mostly because it’s alleged to also work as a mosquito repellent! And ya know what…? All of those old fishermen are right. It totally works! 👌

    8. Your old-school Bath & Body Works signature scent?

Oh! Lots and lots of Green Clover and Aloe, and before that it was Juniper Breeze. I wasn’t really into the fruity fragrances, although everyone else around me seemed to LOVE them. Every girl I knew in college wore Country Apple. 🍎

    9. Have you ever unexpectedly received perfume as a gift, and did you like the scent?

I have! My friend Elizabeth gave me a bottle of J’Adore, and I wore it off and on for about a year.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Oooh this is a fun one!

    1. Scent (or scents) you’ve been wearing the longest?

Chanel Chance Eau Tendre, 9 years?

    2. A perfume or scent you associate with fond memories?

J’Adore reminds me of my mentor who passed away.

    3. A scent that reminds you of summer?

    I second Coppertone Water Babies.

    4. What does your youth smell like?

In high school I only wore body splashes – I had a green tea one I loved, and Gap So Pink.

    5. Did you ever go through a body splash phase?

Yes. I don’t wear them at all now because they give my husband migraines.

    6. A perfume you like (or liked) that suddenly everyone seemed to be wearing?

    I don’t think I really have one!

    7. A scent you’ve been wearing a lot lately?

I have not been wearing perfume. My two go-to scents are Chanel Chance Eau Tendre and Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet.

    8. Your old-school Bath & Body Works signature scent?

We didn’t have one near us, so I didn’t have one!

    9. Have you ever unexpectedly received perfume as a gift, and did you like the scent?

Zack’s sister got me a bottle of a knockoff Paris Hilton perfume when I was 18 that was pretty good. Zack bought me Viva La Juicy which was pretty good, but definitely more to his tastes.

    3. A scent that reminds you of summer? Those clean, oceany scents or coconut smells like the Bum Bum Cream!

    4. What does your youth smell like? Noxema. Cover Girl products with the Noxema remind me of my childhood. Or Love’s Baby Soft

    5. Did you ever go through a body splash phase? Yes. I loved ones with Sun Ripened Raspberry scents!

    6. A perfume you like (or liked) that suddenly everyone seemed to be wearing? CK One

    7. A scent you’ve been wearing a lot lately? I’m wearing a fragrance from Nanette Leopore that I picked up from TJ Maxx. I liked the paisley design of the bottle

    9. Have you ever unexpectedly received perfume as a gift, and did you like the scent? Sure. My friend bought me a perfume with gardenia scent. It was nice but I dropped it and broke it so I didn’t have it long:(

    1. Scent (or scents) you’ve been wearing the longest?
    I guess that’s Coco Mademoiselle, since 2016.
    2. A perfume or scent you associate with fond memories?
That Ralph Lauren one, ha ha! It was so popular when I was in middle school,
    3. A scent that reminds you of summer?
Maison Margiela beach walk. It doesn’t have the longest staying power (and sometimes that’s a good thing) but it’s such a lovely scent. I’d take it to a hot vacation to wear during the day and by evening it will wear off and I can spritz something sexier for dinner!
    4. What does your youth smell like?
I don’t know… some mix between Calgon and Avon body sprays and Vera Wang princess lol. It’s funny you mention the body shops moonflower because I was obsessed with that one! Man, the body shop just isn’t the same anymore.
    5. Did you ever go through a body splash phase?
I sure did. I had a collection of cheap body sprays from Avon and Calgon lol
    6. A perfume you like (or liked) that suddenly everyone seemed to be wearing?
Maybe YSL black opium? No one else I know wears Coco Mademoiselle.
    7. A scent you’ve been wearing a lot lately?
    The aforementioned Coco
    8. Your old-school Bath & Body Works signature scent?
We never had those stores until I was in high school and over body sprays. I picked up one once (there was Twilight something in its name)… I think they smell too synthetic and cheap and most of them smell the same
    9. Have you ever unexpectedly received perfume as a gift, and did you like the scent?
My ex gifted me YSL black opium for Christmas once. I do like it but I don’t wear it much.

I was initially going say that the Bath & Body Works scent was “Twilight Sparkle,” but I’m pretty sure that’s the name of one of the My Little Ponies (the things you learn when you live with a four-year old girl). I think it might’ve been Twilight Path?

    1. Scent (or scents) you’ve been wearing the longest?
I’m actually unsure, as an “adult” I think Natura Homem Potence (around 3 years); but as a child, it was Mennen baby perfume because I used it since I was a baby until around being 8 I think.

    2. A perfume or scent you associate with fond memories?
Revlon Jean Naté, because my grandma wore it daily.

    3. A scent that reminds you of summer?
    Sunscreen with coconut scent.

    4. What does your youth smell like?
Avon Oslo, even though, I wanted so bad to buy one that really smelled like candy, but I don’t remember the name.

    5. Did you ever go through a body splash phase?
Yes, and I think they’re useful on warm days.

    6. A perfume you like (or liked) that suddenly everyone seemed to be wearing?
    I can’t think of one.

    7. A scent you’ve been wearing a lot lately?
Paris Hilton Tease is my everyday scent nowadays.

    8. Your old-school Bath & Body Works signature scent?
We didn’t have Bath & Body works here back in the day.

    9. Have you ever unexpectedly received perfume as a gift, and did you like the scent?
The Paris Hilton one was actually a gift from a friend that didn’t like it and I love it.

I hope you have a great week!

Love’s Baby Soft perfume. I thought I was *all that* when I got my first bottle.

I wore it sometimes, but not a lot.

    6. A perfume you like (or liked) that suddenly everyone seemed to be wearing?
Well, there was that hot minute when everyone was wearing Debbie Gibson’s Electric Youth perfume, lol. (Circa 1989.) I seem to recall liking that one. 😄

    7. A scent you’ve been wearing a lot lately?
I love Nest fragrances, especially Wild Poppy and Sunkissed Hibiscus. Also several of the Maison Margiela Replica frangrances.

    8. Your old-school Bath & Body Works signature scent?
    Sweet Pea.

    9. Have you ever unexpectedly received perfume as a gift, and did you like the scent?

    1. Scent (or scents) you’ve been wearing the longest?
Clinique Happy is ALWAYS a go-to (15 years?) and anything milk & honey scented.

    2. A perfume or scent you associate with fond memories?
Scent-wise, coffee. Coffee is high-school hangs on Friday nights, it’s cozy mornings in the winter, it’s a weekend ritual with the SO.

    3. A scent that reminds you of summer?
Banana Boat sunscreen (I don’t even really go in the sun…and when I do I don’t use Banana Boat), grass, and tomato plants.

    4. What does your youth smell like?
Bath & Body Works Cucumber Melon. 2000 was very fruity.

    5. Did you ever go through a body splash phase?
Please see above. Yes, yes I (we) did. Middle school and high school was ALL about BBW body splash and it was Cucumber Melon. Bonus points if it was the shimmery one.

    6. A perfume you like (or liked) that suddenly everyone seemed to be wearing?
I’ve not been a huge perfume-wearer, so, I can’t really think of one. I’ve been more of the person jumping ON the perfume bandwagons.

    7. A scent you’ve been wearing a lot lately?
Not wearing, really, but I’ve been ALL about the Limoncello and Lemon Mint Leaf candles from Bath & Body works for my house, LOL.

    8. Your old-school Bath & Body Works signature scent?
….Cucumber Melon. The smell makes me gag now.

    9. Have you ever unexpectedly received perfume as a gift, and did you like the scent?
Fiance – when we had been dating for a few months, and it was right when we had been approved for our first apartment together – bought me a bottle of Prada Infusion D’Iris. I was FLOORED. He knew I really like the scent from when I was working at ULTA earlier that year, I think I had mentioned it maybe once? Any how, 9 years later, I still have it. 🙂

Anything that smells like a New Age/occult shop (Egyptian musk-y, incense-y).

    2. A perfume or scent you associate with fond memories?
LUSH’s “H’suan Wen Hua” hair treatment. That smell of Fruit Loops and salad dressing, I dunno, I loved that smell and it reminds me of having amazing, straight, thick hair and falling in love with my [then future] husband over Twitter.

    1. Scent (or scents) you’ve been wearing the longest? I can’t remember. I’ve been wearing Elizabeth and James Nirvana in White since it came out, maybe 7 years ago? Before that I was on a kick with Marc Jacobs Daisy 4Ever. I also wore Calvin Klein Euphoria for a minute.

    1. Scent (or scents) you’ve been wearing the longest?

Guerlain Vétiver. Since I was sixteen. So. Thirteen years.

    2. A perfume or scent you associate with fond memories?

Since I had my driving license, my friend Spewgie and I hopped in my car and headed to the mall to buy a pitching wedges (golf clubs) for our fathers’ birthdays.

Parked the car near a department store entrance and took a shortcut through the cosmetics department where we were ambushed by two perfume sales clerks armed with testers of Guerlain Habit Rouge and Vétiver.

Our fathers ended up with a dozen Titleist golf balls. Whoopsy daisy.

    3. A scent that reminds you of summer?

Sea ‘N’ Ski. The true scent of adventure! Guerlain Terracotta and Guerlain Mayotte AKA Mahora.

    4. What does your youth smell like?

    Hello Kitty Momoberry.

    5. Did you ever go through a body splash phase?

No. But I did go through an ancillary product phase. Guerlain parfum layered with the EdP or EdT, body lotion, body shampoo in the shower, deo, powder…

Parfums, EdPs and EdTs project differently. More depth to the sillage.

    6. A perfume you like (or liked) that suddenly everyone seemed to be wearing?

In junior high the fashion was mountain climbing socks with our mad-about-plaid school uniforms and bleach. The scent of chlorine bleach. Which prematurely wore out the collars of shirts and discolored our ties.

    7. A scent you’ve been wearing a lot lately?

Since I’ve been mostly staying at home, a cloud of Guerlain Mitsouko EdP.

    8. Your old-school Bath & Body Works signature scent?

None. However I have layered the Guerlain Aqua Allegorias with Vétiver.

Aqua Allegoria Cherry Blossom and Guerlain Vetiver become Vétiver Pour Elle Sakura.

Vetiver Pour Elle was a limited edition and made a brief appearance as a Les Parisiennes available exclusively at the flagship store on the Champs-Élysées.

    9. Have you ever unexpectedly received perfume as a gift, and did you like the scent?

My friend Spewigie’s and my birthdays are days apart and we’ve been best friends since before birth (our mothers had the same OB/GYN) so we are like identical twins and have that mental telepathy thing or whatever it’s called going on. Except she is Italian and I am Japanese. I even had her baptized Catholic so we could go to school and heaven together although it turns out the nuns accepted everyone. Oops. I get her Habit Rouge and guitar strings; she gets me Vétiver and bass strings. Or I get her Habit Rouge and Curious George; she gets me Vétiver and Hello Kitty. Spooky.

To tell you the truth, there have been a few rocky moments in our relationship. Guerlain has reformulated Vétiver several times and the IFRA didn’t do anyone any favors when it banned oakmoss but it’s still the best vetiver.

My absolute favorite vetiver is Djedi. Inspired by the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Bergamot, aldehydes, lily of the valley, rose, jasmine, orris, musk, civit, amber, oakmoss, vetiver. The driest, most mysterious animalic vetiver chypre.

Discontinued in late nineteen-twenties. Going price is $100 / ml. About twenty-five bucks a spray.

I wanted Electric Youth SO BAD. I had a friend who wore it and I always thought she smelled great. I had a bottle of Cover Girl Navy during that teenage era, and I always told myself that I would get a bottle of Electric Youth when I finished the bottle of Navy, but I never got around to finishing it. I’m shocked that your daughter never dragged you into a Bath & Body Works! I always assumed it was a teenage rite of passage!

    1. Scent (or scents) you’ve been wearing the longest? Clinique Happy (as long as it has been available, so 20 years?), Versace Bright Crystal (6 or 8 years, maybe)
    2. A perfume or scent you associate with fond memories? Coty face powder that my grandma used to use…haven’t smelled it in years, though
    3. A scent that reminds you of summer? Coconut
    4. What does your youth smell like? Le Jardin was the perfume I used all during college, loved that stuff! That’s telling my age, though, lol
    5. Did you ever go through a body splash phase? No, not really
    6. A perfume you like (or liked) that suddenly everyone seemed to be wearing? Estee Lauder Pleasures (I wore it too for a while, but it would give me a headache)
    7. A scent you’ve been wearing a lot lately? Just my Body Shop Satsuma shower gel
    8. Your old-school Bath & Body Works signature scent? Garden Mint or Sweet Pea
    9. Have you ever unexpectedly received perfume as a gift, and did you like the scent? No, I have a lot of allergies, so people don’t try to buy perfume for me

    1. Scent (or scents) you’ve been wearing the longest? Beautiful by Estée Lauder, Tresor by Lancôme, I wore both for a couple of years, now Citrine by Nest for the last three or four years.
    2. A perfume or scent you associate with fond memories? My Grandma wore Elizabeth Taylor’s Passion!
    3. A scent that reminds you of summer? Coconut suntan lotion, it smells so good to me!
    4. What does your youth smell like? Debbie Gibson’s Electric Youth! Lol!
    5. Did you ever go through a body splash phase? No, I’m sensitive to the alcohol they use, so most of them stink to me.
    6. A perfume you like (or liked) that suddenly everyone seemed to be wearing? Beautiful by Estée Lauder.
    7. A scent you’ve been wearing a lot lately? Citrine by Nest, it’s the only one I wear.
    8. Your old-school Bath & Body Works signature scent? I never liked any of them, they’re better now though.
    9. Have you ever unexpectedly received perfume as a gift, and did you like the scent? My Grandma gave me a bottle of Chanel No 5, it’s pretty, but it’s heavy.

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
