So…what is the Monday Poll?
Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start.
1. Liquid or cream eyeshadow?
Cream eyeshadow, please!
2. Your greatest beauty achievement?
Figuring out how to do a smoky eye on my slightly hooded lids. MAN, that was challenging!
3. What’s your current makeup philosophy?
Don’t worry so much. ?♀️
4. Would you rather wear a perfume that smells like pizza, like hamburgers or like clam chowder?
A margherita pizza…with fresh tomato and basil.
5. Mascara on your lower lashes? Yay or nay?
Lately, it’s been a nay. I’ve been trying to wear less underneath my eyes because it seems like the less I wear in that area, the less tired I look.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Question time! Here they are to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon!

Amy says
1. Liquid or cream eyeshadow?
Cream all the way.
2. Your greatest beauty achievement?
Figuring out how to put on foundation that looks natural. Of course, all the great products to choose from help. But finding the right shade, consistency, amount, prep and blending technique, and the right mixture w other products… took some patience!
3. What’s your current makeup philosophy?
Fresh and natural.
4. Would you rather wear a perfume that smells like pizza, like hamburgers or like clam chowder?
Your answer can not be improved on!! I love the smell of basil. I have a basil-cucumber body wash that’s amazing. Though I would add another option: a nearby pizzeria serves a pie with almonds and figs. Also prosciutto and gruyere… but overlooking that, I’d smell like almonds and figs any day.
5. Mascara on your lower lashes? Yay or nay? Yea, though with a very light touch. I keep meaning to pick up one of those brands that has a tiny bottom-lash-specific wand. They make life a little easier!
Ewa says
Almond and fig pie sounds amazing!?
Karen says
I would be into that pizza, YUM!
Syahidah says
1. Liquid or cream eyeshadow? Cream all the way!
2. Your greatest beauty achievement? Putting tiny jewels on my eyes for a rock concert.
3. What’s your current makeup philosophy? Whatever makes me feel good when I step out the door.
4. Would you rather wear a perfume that smells like pizza, like hamburgers or like clam chowder? Um pizza!
5. Mascara on your lower lashes? Yay or nay? Nah. I agree with you, Karen, it makes me look tired and this momma needs to look awake.
Karen says
Have a great week, Syahidah!
Suzanne C says
1. Liquid or cream eyeshadow?
Cream! Easier to deal with.
2. Your greatest beauty achievement?
Discovering Sunday Riley’s Luna and Good Genes. That was a game changer for my skin.
3. What’s your current makeup philosophy?
“How fast can I get this done and out the door?”
4. Would you rather wear a perfume that smells like pizza, like hamburgers or like clam chowder?
Pizza ftw. It’s comfort food. (Why do I feel like this question has a basis in reality and we’re going to see a link about food perfume this Saturday, lol?)
5. Mascara on your lower lashes? Yay or nay?
Nay. That’s just one more step, without sufficient payoff.
Karen says
Good Genes is the stuff! So great for pigmentation.
Maxine says
1. Liquid or cream eyeshadow? Cream, Tom Ford if you must ask
2. Your greatest beauty achievement? Saying no to trends that won’t work for me or my lifestyle
3. What’s your current makeup philosophy? If it makes me feel good, then do it.
4. Would you rather wear a perfume that smells like pizza, like hamburgers or like clam chowder? Clam Chowder, because I don’t love it so I wouldn’t crave it all day.
5. Mascara on your lower lashes? Yay or nay?
Karen says
Yes, Tom Ford Spice!
Ewa says
1. Liquid or cream eyeshadow?
Usually cream, but I’m loving the Ilia liquid shadows right now.
2. Your greatest beauty achievement?
Leaning how to even out my skin by using tinted moisturizer and spot concealer.
3. What’s your current makeup philosophy?
It’s pretty much stayed the same, which is: do whatever feels right. Confidence is magical, if you feel good and comfortable in yourself you can pull off anything.
4. Would you rather wear a perfume that smells like pizza, like hamburgers or like clam chowder?
Pizza, I guess?
5. Mascara on your lower lashes? Yay or nay?
Nay. Not ever. Raccoons are adorable but I don’t want to look like one.?
Karen says
Spot concealing is the best thing ever. Do you end up setting your concealer with a powder? Or do you just leave it as is?
ericca says
1. Liquid or cream eyeshadow? cream but i really dont use either
2. Your greatest beauty achievement? finding a lipstick that matched my dress but wasnt matchy matchy.
3. What’s your current makeup philosophy? for the love of God use it before it goes bad.
4. Would you rather wear a perfume that smells like pizza, like hamburgers or like clam chowder? pizza
5. Mascara on your lower lashes? Yay or nay? nay
Karen says
LOL to your answer to #2!
Ericca says
I was actually told to go nude or pick a different color . I am glad I went against that advice because I looked fabulous.
Karen says
Ya know, I don’t mind a little matchy-matchy here and there. I think it can look polished and thoughtful. What was the name of the lipstick?
ericca says
fenty flamingo acid
Karen says
Nice! I’ve never tried it but it certainly looks gorgeous!
Kim says
Happy Monday! 🙂
1. Liquid or cream eyeshadow? Is liquid the kind that goes on like a gloss with a doe foot applicator? If so, I’ll choose that. I have a rose colored one that I really like. But my real choice (cheater that I am) would be powder. HAHA!
2. Your greatest beauty achievement? How about my recent “success”? When you were talking about red lips and I was trying to participate, I stumbled across (OK, vigorously googled) some tips that have worked well. I have a small mouth and thin lips so the rec was to use some highlighter just outside the lip line of my top lip, particularly above the Cupid’s Bow and below the lip line in the center of my bottom lip. I did the “highlighting” with my UD Yeyo pencil and blended. I think it really works. Oh, and the dab of gloss in the middle of the bottom lip, of course. I’m trying to wear a different color lip every day with this technique. You know how I am about lip color so this is kind of a big deal for me.
3. What’s your current makeup philosophy? Me but better (as always).
4. Would you rather wear a perfume that smells like pizza, like hamburgers or like clam chowder? Pizza for sure. Easy on the garlic, though. 🙂
5. Mascara on your lower lashes? Yay or nay? Hard nay for me. I feel like anything on my lower lash lines makes my eyes look small except mascara, which makes them look ridiculous. They’re light in color but long. Mascara makes me look like A Clockwork Orange.
Karen says
I know that is a HUGE deal for you. KUDOS! I feel like my baby is growing up. ?
Kim says
HAHA! Don’t worry, I’m sure I’ll be back to bare lipped ways soon. Winter is right around the corner so I’ll be battling dry, flaky lips. And I’m sure I’ll be reaching for lip balm and calling it a day. 🙂 In the meantime, I think I’ll pick up a neutral lip liner. Just in case!
Karen says
It’s kind of amazing how a little shadow and light here and there can completely transform your look! See, this is one of the reasons why I love makeup. You can do these subtle, powerful changes… Or you can skip it and wear lip balm and call it a day. 🙂
Kim says
Very true! I didn’t grab the liner yet but did take the time to wear lipstick again today. I figured I’d cycle through everything and pick my favorite everyday color. You know I’m all about the everyday. 😉
Erica says
1. Liquid or cream eyeshadow? I use both. I’ll say liquid bc I love the Stila Shimmer and Glows!
2. Your greatest beauty achievement? Figuring out how to bronze correctly!
3. What’s your current makeup philosophy? You do you. Makeup is personal and depends on so many things like skin type, face shape and preference. So many try to tell you you need to do it this way or your not doing makeup and now I’m like I’ll do it my way, thanks!
4. Would you rather wear a perfume that smells like pizza, like hamburgers or like clam chowder? Pizza. Love the smell of herbs like basil and oregano!
5. Mascara on your lower lashes? Yay or nay? Nay. My lashes are super long and when I put mascara on my lower lashes I look too doll like?
Karen says
Ooh, yes on figuring out bronzer!
Rachel Runyan says
Happy Monday, Karen! Wishing you and the fam a wonderful week.
1. Liquid or cream eyeshadow? Cream, but only ColourPop Super Shock Shadows. They don’t crease on me. Otherwise, a good liquid that dries down completely. They’re less likely to crease on my super-oily, hooded lids.
2. Your greatest beauty achievement? Being able to do a decent job on my brows.
3. What’s your current makeup philosophy? Adapt to age. I still wear my colors, shimmers, and glitters, so I’m not talking about caving into the “middle aged women should only wear matte neutrals” B.S. that’s pushed on us. However, I’m getting less oily skin, slight-but-permanent wrinkles in my forehead (they’ll get worse), etc. I’ve had to change a few products and application methods, step up my skin care game a bit, that sort of thing.
4. Would you rather wear a perfume that smells like pizza, like hamburgers or like clam chowder? I’m stealing your answer, Karen. I could live with smelling like fresh tomato and basil.
5. Mascara on your lower lashes? Yay or nay? Yay. I have long lower lashes, so I may as well play them up. Often, I’ll do a colored mascara on them.
Karen says
Thank you, Rachel! I hope your week is spectacular.
Melissa says
1. Liquid or cream eyeshadow? Cream when I wear it
2. Your greatest beauty achievement? Getting my skin in shape. I suffered with bad acne in my 20s & 30s. Finally cleared up and I don’t feel the need to slather concealer on to look presentable
3. What’s your current makeup philosophy? Less is more – see above. I want my skin to look good and I don’t mind seeing my freckles Little blush, highlighter, neat brows & mascara.
4. Would you rather wear a perfume that smells like pizza, like hamburgers or like clam chowder? Pizza – love the smell of fresh tomatoes & garlic
5. Mascara on your lower lashes? Yay or nay? No but I am mascara obsessed – I must have 15 tubes in my drawer
Karen says
With you on the mascara obsession, Melissa! Which ones are your current faves?
Melissa says
One from Ilia. It Cosmetics Tightline. I made myself only bring one on vacation & tightline made the cut. I had 4 in the case before I reined myself in ?
Chelsea says
1. Liquid or cream eyeshadow?
Cream!
2. Your greatest beauty achievement?
Drag queens complimented my rainbow eyeliner at Pride last year and asked what I used.
3. What’s your current makeup philosophy?
Make it easy.
4. Would you rather wear a perfume that smells like pizza, like hamburgers or like clam chowder?
Oh god. Pizza. I’m remembering that I spilled clam chowder on myself when I worked in a restaurant and that’s not a good smell.
5. Mascara on your lower lashes? Yay or nay?
Yay! I love big bottom lashes.
Wishing you a good week too!
Jaclyn Levy says
Dude, your #2 answer is definitely an achievement! ?
Karen says
I remember you telling me that story and being super impressed!
Eileen says
1. Liquid or cream eyeshadow? I love those über-creamy powder eyeshadows so I guess I’d say cream eyeshadow if I had to choose between liquid or cream.
2. Your greatest beauty achievement? My two incredible sons. They bring joy and beauty to my life in a way I had never imagined before they were born.
3. What’s your current makeup philosophy? I love Rachel R’s answer. She expressed it perfectly.
4. Would you rather wear a perfume that smells like pizza, like hamburgers or like clam chowder? Well, since I’m a vegetarian, i’d Have to go with some kind of b=veggie pizza scent.
5. Mascara on your lower lashes? Yay or nay? It depends on the situation—casual, no; dressed up, definitely. I have fairly long black eyelashes so putting mascara on the lower lashes is optional. I do like the more dramatic and eye defining look, though, of mascara on upper and lower lashes when doing a smoky eye.
Eileen says
Excuse the typos in #4 ?
Rachel Runyan says
I love your answer to #2!
Karen says
Me too. 🙂
Stephanie Smith says
1. Liquid or cream eyeshadow? Cream please!
2. Your greatest beauty achievement? Learning that less is more.
3. What’s your current makeup philosophy? Less is more.
4. Would you rather wear a perfume that smells like pizza, like hamburgers or like clam chowder? Pizza I guess, heavy on the basil.
5. Mascara on your lower lashes? Yay or nay? Nay, it just doesn’t work on me.
Karen says
I’m into the less is more look too, Stephanie!
Hope you had a nice Monday. 🙂
Jaclyn Levy says
1. Add my voice to the cream chorus!
2. I make a good cat eye. And I can do it quickly!
3. Be bold!
4. Pizza!
5. I actually like this look when I make the time for it. I don’t do it often, but I think it’s a yay!
Karen says
OK, it’s official. I need to make a pizza perfume. HA HA HA!
Susan C. says
1. Liquid or cream eyeshadow?
Cream. I just don’t have the patience to wait for a liquid eyeshadow to dry down.
2. Your greatest beauty achievement?
I’m no longer afraid to wear red lipstick.
3. What’s your current makeup philosophy?
Makeup should be fun!
4. Would you rather wear a perfume that smells like pizza, like hamburgers or like clam chowder?
This vegetarian votes for pizza. Yum!
5. Mascara on your lower lashes? Yay or nay?
Yay; it’s a must with blonde lashes.
Karen says
Suzanne! That’s so great. I think every one needs at least one fantastic red lipstick in their life. Good for you. 🙂
Michele DiCola says
I use cream and powder sometimes both together.
When I’m healthy I feel beautiful.
Less is more . My philosophy
I wouldn’t like any of those as a perfume
NO mascara on lower lashes ; it smudges
