Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 372

May 11th, 2015 by Karen 40 Comments

all you need is love and a cat
The Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll for May 11, 2015

You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse?
    • A portable smoothie machine half the size of an iPhone
    • Her wallet, of course, but all of her credit cards and keys will be digitized, so she won’t have to worry about forgetting her ATM card in the machine, and every cash register will use optical scanners and voice recognition.
    • She’ll also definitely have her makeup bag, but it won’t be much different than they are now. Maybe the bag will open by itself, and then, like, cool-@ss rainbow fog will come out, and a special song will play, but she’ll still carry the basics in there, like lipsticks, powder, face brush.

I don’t think it’ll be like The Jetsons, though. Everybody always thinks that by the year 2000-whatever, we’ll have flying cars and teleportation and computers in our brains, but it never happens! I don’t know… I think it’ll be pretty close to the same as it is now for makeup…but what do I know? I talk to my cat. 🙂

      All. The. Time. LOL.

  2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level?
    4.25
  3. What was your best hairstyle of all time?
Probably the one that I had a couple years ago. It was a little longer and a few shades lighter than my hair now — like a caramel brown with lighter golden pieces throughout it.

    k-hourglass-prism-duo-hair

LOVED the color and the style, but oh! — it was hard to maintain. I kept having to go back to the salon because, you know how it is when you have darker hair and you go lighter, it’s kind of a process. I’d spend half the day at the salon every time I’d go in for a touchup.

But it was fun for a while… I might try it again someday.

  4. All you need is love and…
    • …a cat, obviously. 🙂
    • …a cup of hot coffee or tea
    • …eight hours of sleep
    • …a toothbrush
    • …a pair of really great shoes
    • …some spanx
    • …a tub of ice cream
  5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t?
Eeah. I don’t want to say “a don’t,” because I can totally see myself saying, “Oh, they’re a don’t!” and then falling in love with a fringe bag the next week.

Sooo, a maybe? I don’t know… I love the idea of ’20s-style flapper fringe on a dress, or a cute ankle boot with a little fringe, but I’m not so much into Western-style fringe, like on a jacket or a purse.

Le List

Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!

1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse?
2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level?
3. What was your best hairstyle of all time?
4. All you need is love and…
5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t?

Good morning, my friend. I’m still waking up. If you’re fully awake, could I please borrow some of your energy to perk me up? I’m actually on my second cup of tea already, but this will probably be a three-cupper day.

Maybe even a four-cupper.

How was your Mother’s Day? I hope it was really nice. Mine was fun. My brother and I took my mom out to dim sum, and my dad tagged along.

We ordered WAY too much food, too, but you know…that’s how it goes.

Have a wonderful week. I’m really hoping to get more of my housecleaning/office fixing project done because I made a lot of headway last week with the pink shelving, but things sort of tapered off toward the weekend. I just have to get back into it and keep the momentum going.

So that’s one of my main goals. Talk to you soon.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

    1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse?

A nutritional sludge bar that gives you all the vitamins and minerals you need for the day. 🙂 And a pocket-sized clone of your cat.

    2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level?

    6

    3. What was your best hairstyle of all time?

Right now! Hair is past-shoulder length and is growing, growing, growing. I also loved my super short pixie!

    4. All you need is love and…

Money. Duh. Let’s be real. Money is the best (hand/face/body/feet/heart) lotion. 😛

    5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t?

Nah. It’s a trend that won’t be staying for too long. : )

    1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse?
Hopefully ONE key that can be programmed to open my car, house, and office. Because DAMN that’s a lot of keys. The digitized credit card thing sounds amazing, too. Probably the same type of makeup…

    2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level?
    About a 5. I WANT to be productive, but I just…meh.

    3. What was your best hairstyle of all time?
My long hair, probably. Before college stress, I had a full, thick, wavy mane that looked AMAZING on me. Then stress hit and I lost a lot of hair, leaving me with no option but a pixie.

    4. All you need is love and…
    Food.
    Makeup.
    Your dog.
    Lots of kissing.

    5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t?
DO. I have the cutest pair of ankle booties with fringe and they’re a staple for me. I also love fringe on dresses!

    1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse?
I would probably say makeup and a smartphone
    2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level?
    Ummm…I had an 8 o’clock meeting and I’m not a morning person so I would say a 3
    3. What was your best hairstyle of all time?
Oh that’s a hard one. I would probably say my hair now. When I was younger my hair was super straight and wouldn’t take a curl so I cut it shorter so it would have more body. As I got older and with the change in hormones my hair has waves now. So I’ve gone back to longer hair.
    4. All you need is love and…
my cat (I have a sign that says that!)
oh and my iphone or tablet
    5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t?
Normally I would say “no” but I found this cute cardigan top yesterday at Forever 21 that has fringe and I bought it. I’m waiting for Tulip the cat to see it….she loves string…

    1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse? A device that controls the car that drives itself.

    2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level? 5 Mondays are tough!

    3. What was your best hairstyle of all time? My hair is curly so it often has a mind of its own. I love when my hairdresser straitens it and I get to surprise folks that have never seen it straight before!

    4. All you need is love and… family and a loyal cat or dog.

    5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t? I have fringe on moccasins and it works. I would not put it on clothes or a purse though. 🙂

    1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse?
One thin electronic magic card that is her I.D., pays for purchases, unlocks her home and self driving car and plays music and accesses all the information she needs via whatever form the internet will have then. And one really hot lipstick, because lipstick will never go out of style.
    2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level? Physically around a 3.5. Mentally, closer to a 9, since I’m leaving for a vacation on Friday.
    3. What was your best hairstyle of all time? Probably before my daughter was born. I was a redhead and had a short layered cut.
    4. All you need is love and…
felines, equines, canines, good coffee and/or tea, a comfy but cute pair of shoes, a great pair of boots and great fitting jeans, a toothbrush and a good sunscreen.
    5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t?
Depends on how it’s executed. Once had a vintage 70s suede fringed jacket from a boyfriend that I think would still rock in this day and age. But he took it back when we broke up.

YES! Lipstick will always be in style. I bet one of the lipstick trends will be a self-adjusting red that will adapt to your own skin tone. That would be awesome.

Anywho, have a great week, Tatiana!

I sure hope they perfect self-adjusting lipstick by then. The ones that are out now that are supposed to react with your chemistry to give you color always turn some weird hot pink on me.

    1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse?

I don’t like carrying my purse now so I’m hoping by then they’ll be an alternative to lugging around a 20lb bag.

    2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level?
5 – right in the middle. Some days I’m up for anything and others I just want to crawl into bed as soon as I come home from work.

    3. What was your best hairstyle of all time?
Right now. I’ve finally grown out my hair after a very unfortunate hair mishap but mostly because I actually have a ponytail which I haven’t been able to have in years.

    4. All you need is love and…
    1. a cat (I have 2 and they are like my children)
    2. Mexican food
    3. videos of people doing dumb things (the hubs and I are addicted to Fail Army and Ridiculousness)
    4. facial masks. They really do make everything better
    5. my husband’s cooking (he’s a chef and his food is amazing!)

    5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t?
Definitely a don’t in my book. It reminds of a t-shirt I had circa 1985 that I got along the boardwalk at a beach. It was turquoise, had a print of a unicorn with rainbows (my choice) and the ends of the sleeves and bottom of the shirt were all fringed out. I totally rocked it back then but not a look I want to repeat now.

      Hi Tracy,

I think I might’ve had a similar t-shirt back in the day. I hope you still have that one around! You never know when it’ll come back into style, because it will. I never thought acid washed overalls would make a return…

    1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse?
    -some sort of lip product
-the latest iteration of a smart device (phone, tablet, whatever) that probably includes the keys/cards/access-to-life deal we’re moving towards
-a travel-size hairbrush, because long hair is still on-trend, and hair bands 🙂
    2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level?
meh. Maybe about a 5? I could use a little more pep to my step, but I’m feeling the kind of sluggish that suggests I need some exercise. Can I just do some yoga at work, in my office, while wearing a button-down shirt? haha.
    3. What was your best hairstyle of all time?
hmmm! This is a hard one. I kind of really like how it looks at chin length, but it’s a hard look for me to maintain day-to-day. It tends to look pretty great when I have it super long, like mid-back-length with layers, but I also luuurv it short. So… hahaha let me not answer your question at all. ALL OF THE HAIRSTYLES.
I think a pixie cut is my fave, in terms of style vs. maintenance. Does that count? 🙂
    4. All you need is love and…
    – good, dark chocolate – yummy beer – a nice, dry rosé – cheese – a warm hug – family –
    5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t?
eeehh…. I’ve come around to it a bit, so I tend to like it when I see it out in the world, but I don’t think it’s something I’d go for personally (unless it was the *perfect* fringe).

Dude! I just finished Eat Pray Love (9 years late) and it was so freakin good. I feel like I’ve stumbled across so much stuff recently that has this “follow your dreams with intention, be generous to yourself” sort of bent, and I have to admit it’s pretty inspiring! And it turns out I’m a sucker for it, too 🙂
Hoping your day is lifted up and wonderful, even if you’re running a little low on steam, Karen!

Duuuuude. I am one of the 10 people who still hasn’t read that book. So it’s a good one, huh? Have you watched the movie? I watched it and was like, “Eh.”

I have NOT seen the movie, and after reading the book, am not really sure I want to. I’m usually interested to see the cinematic interpretation of books, buuuut maybe not so much in this case? There’s just SO MUCH in terms of personal journey/thoughts that it seems like it would translate very poorly to a movie… But I’ll probably check it at some point. There’s also a whole lot I can relate to in terms of her perspective on spirituality, which might definitely seem hippy dippy to some people, but I’m surprisingly (surprising to myself, even) open to it. Just a right place/right time kind of thing for that read, for me.

    1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse?

I’m hoping she’ll be liberated from The Purse! It would be a big bash to fashion though, so maybe The Purse would be the purveyor of her Secret Weapon. Which would be different for every woman! Secretly, mine used to be The Collapsible Curling Iron.

    2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level? It’s about a 7. Hoping to get to 9 by the afternoon walk!

    3. What was your best hairstyle of all time? Hmm, there have been so many. Nape-of-the-neck layered with copper highlights. (The haircut was the loss-leader – the highlights were beyond expensive and faded in 2 weeks!)

    4. All you need is love and…Dark chocolate!

    5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t?

Oh, yes! In moderation of course. I am still mourning those Minnetonka fringed boots I ordered last fall that were supposed to be my size but they looked like they would fit a kindergartner. Then last week I saw a gal with that pair on – adult though she was, she was the size of a kindergartner.

But there is something about brown fringe that gets to me every time! And I did fess up to the accusation that I dated a guy once just so that I could borrow his brown fringe suede jacket! (That relationship was doomed anyway – I mean, the guy oughta be bigger than the gal.)

    1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse?
Nothing but a large smartphone, that will serve as a payment device, ID, driver’s license, key to open the house and car doors, etc… That plus a little bag with her makeup! I don’t imagine makeup being very different in the next centuries – after all, the formulas and packaging may be new but the types of products we use are not that different from centuries past: face powders, eyeliners, lipstick, blush have all been in use for a long time in one form or another.

    2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level?
    6. Getting slowly ready to go for a run. If my knee lets me…

    3. What was your best hairstyle of all time?
Once when I was about 25 I went to that random salon and the guy who cut my hair was a genius. It was a short bob and it looked fantastic. Never happened again…

    4. All you need is love and…
Earl Grey tea, and a bit of sunshine.

    5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t?
Don’t. Maybe really small as a cute details but not on a purse.

I did! It went pretty well, no pain during the run, now fingers crossed that I don’t wake up with a super sore knee tomorrow. I have this weird issue since I started running again after my forced time off, which is that I run too fast… I’m way above what my natural pace was before the injury (like 1 min per km faster or sometimes even more), and I swear I try to slow down! Isn’t it crazy?

The undone, uncolored, alost waist long hair I had when I was 10. Since then I have been trying to go back there, button salon can achieve the healthy blonde of summers at the beach…

Absolutely Do. I will get something, just haven’t decided whether it is going to be a bag or shoes.

    1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse? A smart phone that does everything. Works as a videophone, interfaces with bank machines, etc. It will have all her debit, credit and rewards cards programmed into it. It will work with vending machines, parking meters, and the like. Makeup and scent, which will be incredibly long-lasting and anti-aging. Sunglasses. Great-tasting, zero-calorie snacks.

    2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level? About a 3.

    3. What was your best hairstyle of all time? My wedding hair.

Hi, Karen. My kids gave me my gifts on Friday. I got Dior Poison and hazelnut chocolates. Hubby surprised me with a weekend at the Oregon Coast sans kids. It was really nice and relaxing. We didn’t do a lot, just chilled, looked at pretty scenery and ate good food. I hated having to come back.

I’m glad you had a good time taking your mom out. Enjoy the rest of your Monday!

Since my 2014 “smart” phone isn’t copying or pasting:

    1) 2115 phone will be in a purse. It’ll be hands free and do all audio directing.

    2) energy level is a 2. I’m in the stressful process of 2 moves, and just can’t face the mess. The humid, rainy weather today in Chicago is a drag.

    3) best hairstyle is only if I have a professional blowout. I was born with natural curl, waves and frizz!

    4) all you need is love and great, reliable friends. Also caffeine, pet therapy, nature and MAC makeup.

    5) fashion fringe: I personally can’t pull it off, but I love when others do!

Thank you for the wishes!! 9 TIMES…I just panicked for you! This will be my 6th time but 3rd country. Moved back to Chicago 8 days ago from Toronto for the past 3 years. Having some “readjustment” issues and begged my hub to move us to Cali! Instead, he called me today with another job transfer to London, England. I’m excited but more scared. Every word you said in your post a week and a half ago I felt and related to. I hope you’re on the up and up!! Xx

    1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse?
Everything, because the purses will be like Mary Poppin’s or Hermione’s bag which had some sort of spell to pack everything in it.

    2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level?
7 with a steady decline, haha! If only I had energy to give you. I had a total of four hours of sleep last night but with the 2 cups of coffee I had, I am currently perky. We’ll see how the rest of the day goes, it is gonna be a toughie. I’ll probably need a 3rd cup!

    3. What was your best hairstyle of all time?
I really like shoulder length straight hair with layers and side-swept bangs!

    4. All you need is love and…
    -sleep, sleep, sleeeeeeep
    -family
    -food
    -music

    5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t?
-dooooooooooooooooooooooooooon’t!!!! I would immediately turn away. But if not quick enough, it will turn into a ‘do’!

      Hi Julia,

Thank you! The plan this afternoon is to do more clearing of the space just outside my office. Then I’m headed to Target to look at storage bins.

I hope that you can make some time this week to de-clutter. The small amount that I’ve done in the past two weeks has lifted a huge weight off my shoulders.

    1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse?

I predict that by this time we won’t be carrying purses, and everything will be digital!

    2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level?

Five. I’ve been working CRAZY long shifts for the last little while and it’s really taking it’s toll on me… And I’m only at the Wednesday of my work week!

    3. What was your best hairstyle of all time?

I had a gorgeous graduated undercut, with angled bangs and the top all spiky… That was two years ago, and although I currently have a wonderful hairstylist, I’ll always miss that cut!

    4. All you need is love and…

    Furry fluffy animals!

    5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t?

It’s a don’t for me – too distracting, plus my kitty would take it as a challenge!

      Hi Jules,

LOL, Tabs would do the same thing. He’d think that I wore the fringe solely for his entertainment! How is Prince Jacko Boy von Pufferpants Plumey LeMatou doing these days, by the way? Do you have a pic of him? I’d love to see him in the fur!

    1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse?
I’m pretty sure that a gadget that makes as smartphone and has apps to be keys, credit card and everything else, some makeup (can be lipstick and/or powder), candies, a bottle of water and tissues (necessities are necessities).

    2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level?
Right now a 7 I did some errands and now I have to do pilates.

    3. What was your best hairstyle of all time?
In fact right now I’d say really short even though now I’m letting it grow.

    4. All you need is love and…
friends, family, food, pets, makeup, books and music.

    5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t?
I think they’re a do but with caution, they’re easy to overdo.

My mother’s day was really calm we went to a seafood buffet and we ate like there’s no tomorrow so now my mom and I are paying for eating more than we normally do.

    1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse? Oh, for sure a wand that she can wave over any part of her body that’s getting too much fat and cellulite to just dissolve it into thin air.
    2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level? Oddly enough, even though it’s towards the end of a Monday evening, I’m at like a 7. It’s either the afternoon yoga sesh I got in or all the iced coffees I guzzled today 🙂
    3. What was your best hairstyle of all time? I looked really good with a Rachel back in the day but my best look is probably a long bob, with the longer pieces toward the chin. Btw, your best look is smokin’ hot! You should go back. I, too, spend half a day in the salon every month but it’s not easy to be beautiful.
    4. All you need is love and…all of the things mentioned on your list. Plus a trust fund.
    5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t? Do. I’m really loving a bit of fringe on boots and bags. But I don’t want to go too far with it. I think fringe could be Easily overdone.

    1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse? I don’t know, but I hope it’s a hover purse by then!
    2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level? 4-ish. It’s almost 9 p.m. here and I’m sleepy!
    3. What was your best hairstyle of all time? I had hair down to my butt in college and it was so pretty and shiny and not a gray hair in sight. I miss it sometimes, but every time my hair gets down past my collarbone, I remember how much maintenance it requires and how tangly and snarly it gets. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
    4. All you need is love and…friends and family with the same sense of humor as you. And root beer!
    5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t? For me in my office life, it’s a don’t. Although for Halloween I still kind of want to be Kate from the B-52s in the Love Shack video, replete with more orange fringe than you could shake a stick at! 😉
Good luck finishing your shelves! I second the rainbow cloud emanating from purses in the future!

I thought the whole point of dim sum was to fill the table with plates? 😉 Glad you had a nice day! We did brunch at home for my mom, complete with breakfast burritos from her favorite place.

    1. BEE-BOO-BEEP! Fast-forward to the year 2115. What does the average woman carry in her purse?
Definitely a digital wallet, a mini personal climate (modern version of the scarf/fan). Thinking back to 1915, we don’t carry much more than women did then, except for smartphones and car keys!

    2. On a scale of 1-10, with one being sluggish and 10 being jazzed up, what’s your current energy level?
Maybe a 5. I’m about to take a rare nighttime shower and hit the hay at a decent hour.

    3. What was your best hairstyle of all time?
I suppose right around now! I’m 31 and finally learning how to really manage the hair that I have.

    4. All you need is love and…
Snuggles with something furry, a good beverage of your choice and a great book. Plus forehead kisses always make me feel better.

    5. Fashion fringe (shoes, boots, clothes, bags): a do or a don’t?
I can’t stand it, too much frou-frou for me!

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
