Lounge By the Pool in the Open Thread

September 12th, 2010 by Karen 160 Comments

Summer’s winding down, girlfriend, so let’s make the most of it before fall. Grab your towel, sunscreen and flip-flops, and brace your bum for a lounge chair; this week’s open thread starts now.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Open ThreadIf you’re new to the open thread, here it is in a nutshell:

It’s our very own club house where we kick it in the comments and chat about whatever we want — beauty (of course), books, B-movies, business, buffoonery — and all sorts of other things that don’t start with ‘b’. 🙂

It runs all day and night (even after I’ve hit the haaaaay), so stop by whenever you can, and as often as you like.

There’s a pitcher of iced tea and lemon slices over there. Just help yourself.

See you soon!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

This is my first open thread post…hello!! I am enjoying the sunny weather, testing out the staying power of my Buxom Stay there eyeshadow, and waiting for my papa murphy’s pizza to finish cooking. What are y’all up to?

How are you liking the eyeshadow? I bought a couple shades but haven’t tried them yet.

I am polishing off a birthday cupcake and watching football! And anxiously awaiting the true blood finale!

There’s no way! I betcha the writers will do something sneaky, like hint that he could be either dead or alive in the last minute of the finale.

uhhuuhhhh and then we spend the time in between seasons chafing at the bit to know whether he made it … i mean logically he will make it but still! 😀

No kidding! I don’t think the writers would be so cruel as to suddenly get rid of Eric. There’s just no way!

LOL… I’m pretty sure you’re not the only person who’d do that.

I get the feeling that the writers aren’t *that* risky. A big part of the appeal is the tension between Bill/Sookie/Eric, and I’m betting there’s no way they’d get rid of that dynamic — it’s the show’s bread and butter, ya know?

            so true. 😀

i mean … yeah it makes sense that they have to keep the love triangle the entire series is based upon!

i also wish that they keep pam – she is sassy and funny and wears a lot of pink. i <3 her!

I just got out of the shower. Earlier today I went running, then I sat by the pool and read, and now I’m just waiting for the TB finale.

Do tell about the shadow! I want to hear if it’s any good.

That’s crazy!! I’d love to see Tina Fey and/or Amy Poehler host something. What other female comedians are out there right now? I’m drawing a blank.

Did you happen to see Jimmy Fallon host the Emmys? I LOVED the glee bit he did for the opening. I may be biased though because I love Jimmy Fallon and I am die hard gleek.

THat’s all the female comediennes I can think of right now, too. There’s actually a lot that are on Chelsea Lately. They’re her writers and part of her production company, too. They’re part of her “round table” bit on her show.

I didn’t catch the Emmys, but I heard Jimmy Fallon did great. I’m a fan of his show. Something about his awkard-ness is cute. Believe or not, I just can’t get into Glee. I know, I know. Shame on me, lol!

Mad Men is all that and a bag of chips! It has some of the BEST television writing (possibly ever).

Yes, a lot of it is about the authenticity of the sets and wardrobe, but the character development and the story line are compelling.

What I like most about it, though, is that the writers assume the audience is smart. They don’t hold your hand or baby you!

Here are my news of the week:
I went clubbing yesterday for the first time.. Let me tell ya, it is not my thing. I love dancing, but please do not try to dance with me or touch me cause I will smack you!
I thought what better occasion to try out my Naked palette! I used Toasted all over the lid, Hustle in the crease, added some of my own purple eyeshadow under the Hustle and added the 24/7 liner in Zero. I love the colors! 😀
So that’s pretty much it. I’m going to have calzone now for supper, yummy!
    Talk to you soon!

I like Mad Men a lot. It’s a hard show to watch sometimes because every character is flawed (and therefore real) that it’s hard to figure out who to root for, you know? I’m so used to people being presented as perfect. It’s a beautifully done show. I don’t have TV (I watch it on the computer) but I can’t wait to see the VMA highlights!! 🙂

The buxom eyeshadow is interesting, haha. I love the texture and color, but it actually creased WITH primer. So far it hasn’t creased without it. I’m hoping it won’t because I LOVE it.

MAC venomous villains– Can’t wait!! I must have the french quarter eyeslick thing. And the mineralize eyeshadows. SWOON.

    Hey everyone 🙂

I’ve got two essays to write today. I’m motivating myself like this: when the first one is done, I get to paint my nails. Then onto essay #2 lol.

Karen, I’ve got a question for you. Actually, I’ve wanted to ask this for a couple of years, it’s just that my memory is horrible. Where do you get those…animated-ish pictures that you put up in front of your open thread posts sometimes? Like this one: https://www.makeupandbeautyblog.com/just-for-fun/grab-a-seat-and-stay-for-the-open-thread/

I just think they’re really cute xD
I’m also craving Nutella like crazy right now. Did you do anything fun this weekend?

Hey Karen and the rest of the crew!! Wishin you all a sunny Sunday from Phoenix Arizona. I read MBB everyday at work much to my bosses chagrin 🙂

You all have got me craving cake!! I went earlier and with my roomy to try the grand opening of a new chinese food restaurant that is like two blocks aways (yum!!) and we got extras so we’d have dinner and not have to leave the apartment again…but now cake sounds sooooo good LOL.

I am also psyched for Venomous Villains…looking forward to the mineral shadows, and picking up push the edge purple pigment..has the prettiest blue violet shimmer, when rimmed in brown script e/s…great for brown eyes! I missed it in the last round so I’ll be sure to have them put one on hold for me. Also want the Briar Rose beauty powder and Darkly My Dear looked so pretty on Karen the other day I may pick that one up too. We are having a launch party here in Phoenix at the Biltmore Mall location so Im very excited to go.

Hmmm…I better decide if the trek out is worth it…Big Brother is going to be on soon!! (I dont have cable, or i would be drooling over the true blood finale as well…LOL!)

    Oh, and happy B-day Tiffany!

      Hi Brian (aka Roulette!),

I’m so glad you popped by! A big hello from sunny Nor Cal. We usually get an indian summer here in the bay area, which means it’s wonderfully warm in September and October.

I’ll have to try Push the Edge with Brown Script (aka one of my fave MAC browns, evah!). Thanks for the idea!

As for Darkly My Dear — you will love it. It’s richly pigmented. A little goes a long way, so I like to put it on with a skunk brush and a light touch.

Didja get anything from Fabulous Felines?

Actually I did! I got the Leopard Luxe quad, and I got sample of Lithe and Bloodline pigments. I didn’t like Bloodline at first, it looked burgundy in the jar but yucky brown on my hand. BUT, I saw one of the gals I work with wear Bloodline packed solid on the lid with Brown Script mixed with Soba halo-ing it and then a black water and tightline and it turned Bloodline into the most awesome warm grey!!! I tried it myself last weekend and it looked awesome. 🙂

Ended up making chocolate fudge cake with Ghirardelli chocolate chips mixed in and dark chocolate fudge frosting. OMG it was soooo good. 🙂

i love japanese makeup and skincare – my fave are their cleansing products – either oils (kracie cleansing oil) or fluid (mandom cleaning express).

majollica majorca makes great mascara and eyeshadow palettes.

id love to go to japan. i mostly buy my japanese mu and skincare at a local japanese store here or online. 🙂

Needed a pick-me-up after some crappy news from work. One way or the other, the report gets delivered tomorrow. Just need to decide tonight if I take my name off of it before it gets published. Yep, that bad.

My other pick-me-up was a trip to the outlets to get some tops. Stopped into CCO and scored MAC Laugh A Lot. Wanted it when the collection came out but thought it was too similar to Syrup. That and Mink and Sable definitely improved my mood.

Just the standard California roll: rice, imitation crab, avocado, and cucumber. Oh, and we added a little wasabi and pickled ginger. Like I said, it tasted really good, I just had alot of trouble slicing it once I got home with it. They said to use a serrated knife like a bread knife, but mine just kind of ripped it to shreds, it probably isn’t sharp enough. So, it ended up looking more like a sushi salad. LOL.

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
