Let Loose in the Open Thread

July 25th, 2010 by Karen 146 Comments

So far my day’s entailed multiple loads of laundry, a trip to the grocery store and a play session with Tabs. Now I’m about to watch the latest episode of Drop Dead Diva (I miss Tony!) over lunch. What are you doing? Can you come say hi in the open thread?

Makeup and Beauty Blog Open ThreadIf you’re new to the open thread, here it is in a nutshell:

Remember when Carrie and the SATC girls would meet for brunches/lunches and catch up while they chowed down? That’s kinda what we do in the open thread. We meet in the comments to chill and chat about makeup, relationships, movies, cats (LOL!), food — you name it. Please feel free to reach out to me or to anyone else, too, because everyone here is really nice.

It goes on all day and night, so stop by if/when you can, and as often as you’d like.

Oh! Here are a few pictures I took yesterday of products I’ll be reviewing soon…

Boots No. 7 Stay Perfect Shadow in Khaki, $7

L’oreal Infallible Never Fail Lipcolor Stars Collection lip compacts, $11 each.

Wet ‘N’ Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Singles clockwise from left: Lagoon, Envy and Kitten, $2 each

Fusion Beauty LipFusion Infatuation gloss in Angelic, $29

See you in a few!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

    Hey Karen!!

I am having a laaaazy Sunday – I have a bazzillion chores to do but I am severely procrastinating the weather here in NY sucks humid humid humid and hot – yesterday I loafed around the pool in my building and got a little tan. I was looking pretty pale for being midsummer. Jazmine is being moody and decided not to love me and is only loving her cat dad

      Hi Yadi!

Lazy Sundays are the best, aren’t they? I’m trying to get through a few chores myself ((sigh)).

You’re lucky the pool is open! Ours has been closed all summer. They’re rebuilding the pool house and at the rate they’re going it probably won’t be done until December.

Speaking of moody cats, Tabs has been acting out as of late. When he isn’t ignoring me he’s biting my elbows or swiping at my ankles. I think the hot weather makes him NUTS!

What’ve you been up to this summer? Have you gone on any trips?

Y’know what – Linus has been acting weird around Mojo these days. I mean with me hes all sweet and clingy especially when im brushing him. But there have been instances where Mojo passes him and he Linus takes a swat at Mojo. Weird.

I made the DUMBEST beauty decision this weekend.
I needed to dye my hair this week. While browsing Wal-Mart with my boyfriend, I decided to stray from my usual deep red because I was distracted by a box of bright blonde hair colour.

    BAD DECISION

I ended up with about 5 varying colours of brown, red, blonde orange and white. Its the worst!
I’ve be agonizing over it for days now.

You could also try hitting up a salon that specializes in corrective color.

I’m looking forward to your reviews of the Boots No7 single eyeshadows. I think these are really pretty shadows, not hugely pigmented but just enough to give you a wash of colour for an easy day look.

I have 14 of them (which I think is almost all the shades they do) because over here Boots very often run a promotion where they give you a voucher for £5 off any No 7 item and these are only about £6.50 each at full price.

The usual setup with the vouchers is you get one whenever you spend £5 and as I buy lunch in there most days (they do food too!) I always end up with tons of vouchers to use. They’re like rabbits – they breed! 🙂

Happy Sunday to you too – I’m sorry, that was totally rude of me not to ask how your weekend was! I hope you’re having a great one 🙂

I really like Opal, which is a super-pale, opalescent pink, Truffle which is a gorgeous chocolate brown and Wheatsheaf, which is a lovely beige. Pacific green is beautiful too, sort of a pale aqua with a blue shimmer through it.

The only ones I’m not so keen on are Comet (dark grey) and Oyster (taupe) because they’re glittery rather than shimmery and there’s quite a bit of fallout. It’s not the worst fallout ever, but when you’re rushing in the morning it’s an extra thing to have to fix so I tend to skip them unless I’ve got the time to do a good job with it.

Have you got a few of the colours, or is it just khaki at the moment?

      Hi Beth,

      Oh, no worries! 🙂

Right now I only have Khaki, but Truffle and Pacific Green both sound like my style. I hope my nearby Target has ’em in stock.

I wore Khaki to the movies last night, but by the time I got home about half the color had faded. I think it might be because I forgot to apply primer beneath. Hopefully that’ll make a difference, because the color’s gorgeous.

My swatching isn’t brilliant, but I’ll get some pics taken of the colours I have and upload them so you can see what they’re like. I’m really fair skinned, but it’ll be something to go on.

I have done it:) I think it’s great! I’m a ballet dancer and I was able to dance as I normally would and had the energy to sustain my endurance. It works best to follow everything exactly as prescribed, but for my active lifestyle I allowed myself to drink as much of the lemonade as I felt I needed. The evening tea plus the morning salt water really work, haha! If you are thinking of starting the first time, I suggest taking a few days to slowly get your body clean by cleansing yourself out with tons of fruits and veggies, it will make the cleansing easier if you are not used to it. It will make you feel great!

And hi Karen! This is my very first time posting on your bolg, but I have been a fan for quite a while now. I love MBB! I am a dancer in NYC, and I have an American Bulldog mix named Spot. Give Tabs a hug for me:)

Really? That’s so strange, I thought they’d do it everywhere. In almost all the stores in England I’ve been in they do. It’s not a massive range, but its a lunch offer they do – sandwiches, snacks and drinks. it’s handy for me because I’d have to buy lunch anyway and so I may as well get some advantage points out of it! 🙂

You may want to go with a little shimmer on the lid paired with a matte neutral in the crease along with matte cheeks and lips. Mattes in general tend to photograph really well, but the trick is to blend out the edges so the color looks seamless.

For the color of your dress maybe try a matte pink or coral lip, matte pink or coral cheeks and a shimmery gold on the lid with either a beige or brown in the crease? If you want to go bolder on the eye you could always add thick cat liner on the top lash liner and some false lashes too.

Karen, thanks for the advice because it’s brilliant and so helpful! I really want to give false lashes a go so now’s my chance! All for the purpose of research in advance!
I can picture what I’d use for my eyes straight away, I can see my creaseless cream shadows coming in well!
Which lipsticks do you rate best for staying power? I was considering Chanel, but I’m not sure! I’m really willing to splurge a little on my makeup since my sister bought my dress as a birthday present(there’s nothing better than sisters!)

          Hi Deirdre,

I like MAC and Chanel. If you want your lipstick to last you could also try picking up a lip pencil, too. Use it to line and fill in your lips, and then pop the lipstick on top. It should last you a long time!

I really want to dye my hair a deep red! This sudden urge to dye my hair was sadly induced by a red-velvet cupcake. I’m tired of my honey-blonde strands, and while noshing on a Sprinkles red velvet I thought ‘I LOVE that color…’ But i’m nervous. Any of you ladies done a drastic hair change to red? Here are my utterly random contributions to the open thread:

I polished off a jar of Nutella last night with a spoon while reading Vanity Fair. Fabulous!

I am doing laundry, went to the gym, grilled chicken for dinner later while I cleaned the pool and will be heading out on a 9-mile bike ride with the Mr. in about an hour. I did not/will not enjoy any of those things but do feel virtuous for having accomplished them, lol.

I had a fun time buying too much makeup this week. Haulage include Rouge Volupte Perles in Beige Caresse and Coral Sun, Lancome Art Liner in Ice Black & La Lacque Faver in Lucent Nude. All the lippies are beautiful.

I can’t wait for True Blood and both kittehs sat on my head in bed this morning. That is all.

    Hey Karen!

How are you and King Tabs?

I pretty much spent the whole weekend as a date weekend with BF. We have been biking around town and it has been really fun reconnecting. 🙂 Sometimes you just get caught in these ruts where you just want to stay home and not do anything, so it has been a breath of fresh air (quite literally!). Today was especially gorgeous by the lake in Toronto.

Have you tried any Kiehl’s products? I went in to a Kiehl’s boutique for the first time yesterday and picked up their Lip Balm in Coconut and a Restorative Dry Oil. So far I am loving both — great texture and scent. 🙂 I’m hoping the oil will cure the alligator legs.

You live near SF right? BF and I are going to be in Fairfield, CA for several days in August and we’re planning out things to do, places to eat at, etc. Any recommendations? OH, and good beauty shopping LOL (it’ll be our little secret!).

Funny you should mention summer polish shades. I know you mentioned specific brands, but if by chance you need a quick fix and live near a drugstore maybe pick up a bottle of Rimmel Lasting Finish Pro. I just swatched a whole bunch of summery colors yesterday! Pictures will go up after I get a chance to test ’em (they’re supposed to last 10 days, we’ll see), but both Marine Blue (a shimmery teal) and Violet Metal (a shimmery purple) are very pretty.

Randomness of the weekend–ate at a Joe’s Crab Shack (“funny name for a restaurant, bad name for a health clinic”–the BF), managed to spend UNDER $50 at Target, and am gearing up for Mad Men Season 4!!!!!!! I’m just a teeeeeensy bit excited. 🙂 Oh also I saw my friend perform on the Today Show on Friday–he just joined John Mayer’s band. Woot!

In terms of beauty related stuff, I totally bought this new perfume on an impulse–it’s from Givenchy and it’s pretty new, I think it’s called “Le Ange Ou Demon le Secret” or something fancy shmancy like that. All I know is that it’s the first floral I’ve tried that doesn’t turn gross on me after 5 minutes (I’m more of a spicy oriental person apparently).

Hope you’re having a good day Karen!

      Hi Elle,

How was Joe’s? There’s one here in SF and I’ve always wondered about it.

Oh, and that’s great news for your friend. What instrument does he play? Random John Mayer story: I saw him perform in SF before his first album broke. My friend and I muscled our way to the front of the stage, and during the show JM and I locked eyes smiled at each other. LE SIGH!

I’ve been wondering about that scent! Will have to make a note to self to smell it when it comes out.

Can’t wait for Mad Men, WOOT!

        Hi Karen!

I liked Joe’s–we got the crab nachos (really good in my opinion) and we split one of the huge steampots–it had dungeness crab, alaskan crab, corn on the cob, potatoes, and andouille sausage. It was all really good–it is a little far from the city so I don’t know when we’d go back–and it’s kinda wacky since they make the waiters dance around to the music. 🙂

LOL, love the Mayer story! That’s too funny. Was he good live? I have yet to see him concert but that will probably change soon…I really want to get on the Mayer cruise thing he does. Haha! My friend plays trumpet and he’s always done more jazzy-type stuff so it will be interesting to see how he likes it.

I think you’d like the scent–I remembered that I wanted to get that Chloe fragrance that you reviewed as well since that was another floral I really liked!

And yup, an hour til Mad Men for me…I just read the description and it said “Don makes a mistake that could jeopardize the new firm”. Oh noes!

Hey Karen – came for my weekly TABS fix! LOL
I’ve had a pretty lazy too, spent most of the day obsessing over which Dare to Wear Eye Shadows to get – and couldn’t decide, so I’m getting them all! I have so many MAC eyeshadows – I lost count at around 125 and that was well over a year ago. Eyeshadow is my thing! Anyway, hope you had a good Weekend and thanks for sharing Tabs! Love it!

      Hi Wendy,

WOW! How do you organize them? Do you depot and put them into palettes? Or do you keep them as singles?

My weekend went by way too fast. 🙁 I’m not ready for it to be over.

My weekend was pretty awesome I might say 🙂 Just enjoying the last hurrah of summer before school starts again. Boo. Some days I wish being a hippie was an actual job.

And because its a certain waxed individual I will say that said butt was not hairy at all. Just toned. Very toned. Rofl

    hi Karen! 😀
it’s officially Monday on my side of the world and our President will give his State of the Nation Address later.. 3 guesses on where i am now (if you follow current events)! 😀

*sigh* i wish Wet n’ Wild (and Milani and NYX) will decide to put stalls here in my city.. it would be so much effortless and hassle-free for consumers other than those living in the West! 🙂

and oh, can i just say that it was because of you why i finally found my HG mascara? 😀 Stila’s Lash Visor FTW! \m/

Hey everyone! Does anyone have any recommendations for what to try out from NYX? I’m looking into ordering online from the brand. Any certain products, shades, etc.. I have light/medium skin for reference.

Hey Haley! I really like NYX’s jumbo eye pencils in Milk and Black Bean. Milk makes shadows pop, and Black Bean is a great base for smokey eyes. I’d also recommend trying out some of their eyeshadows. My favorite one is Black, it’s just a nice pigmented matte black which I like to use in the outer corner, or to set my liner.

    Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone had tried Mally make up?
It is quite new to the UK and I wondered what people thought of it?

    Thanks

      Hi Claxers,

I tried one of her palettes a couple years ago and liked it:

Just sitting here watching and admiring my cat Fanny. She’s a rescue who lost one of her back legs and tail after having been caught in the fanbelt (hence the name “Fanny”…I know…kinda sick…I didn’t name her!) of a truck at a regional airport when she was a kitten. I used to be quite involved in animal rescue, and have a particular sympathy for the handicapped ones, so was contacted and asked if I would give her a home about eight years ago. She’s been with me since. She’s a beautiful little girl…smoky grey and white and her fur is as soft as a bunny. I admire her because she has no idea she’s missing a couple of things, therefore can do almost anything the other cats do and nothing much stops her. I just watched her climb from the floor to a chair to a table to a window, so she could watch the birds. She can run pretty fast when she’s gonna get meds for anything, too. 🙂 Never underestimate the handicapped cats & dogs!

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
