Leave a Comment for a Chance to Win a $50 Sephora E-GIFT CARD! (Ends Monday)

January 23rd, 2016 by Karen 478 Comments

** THE GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED **

This giveaway is closed, and the winner has been contacted (CONGRATULATIONS, INDIA!!!), but check back next Saturday for another giveaway.

Sephora giveaway!

shark-pincher-clawSee, now, I knew I should have gotten that toy shark pincer claw thingy when I saw it at the Monterey Bay Aquarium a couple weeks ago because I could really use longer arms right now. I move around like a seal out of water! Turning over in bed takes me 10 minutes (only slightly exaggerating), and this is all to say that I can barely move right now, and reaching for things, like the light switch beside my bed, takes superhuman effort.

Good times…

How’s it going this morning, my friend? If it’s still snowing where you are, I sure hope it stops soon. Sending you warm vibes…

BTW, your tabby nephew has been very unsympathetic to the whole pregnancy plight situation, and I think he needs a “talking to.” Every night he repeatedly tries to climb Mt. Karen, even though Mt. Karen does not want to be climbed, so I politely scoot him off, but then he just tries again…

You really can’t change that tabby’s mind when once it gets fixated on something.

Whatever you’re doing today, I hope it isn’t under 10 feet of snow! Have a great weekend, and good luck in the giveaway. Reader Bonnie Clyne won one last month. I wonder what she ended up getting…

@karenmbb TY for the Sephora GC! With your humor, the way you write, and including Tabs, it's like hanging with a friend vs. reading a blog!

Sadly, we are buried under 18″ of snow (thanks, Philly!) and I am allergic to MAC’s Cream Color Base. 🙁 Thankfully, we have not lost power and are not stuck on the road anywhere. And they have sent police out to drive the homeless to shelters. I hope stray animals are OK.

I had the WORST reaction to Diorshow mascara once. It was my first time using it, or any Dior cosmetic for that matter, and I don’t know if I had an allergic reaction or if it was contaminated but my eyes got really swollen and red and a few days later the skin on and around my eyelids peeled really bad. Prior to the incident, I had a small skintag under my left eye and they peeled so much that it actually removed it! So at least it had a happy ending, lol, but the experience was so bad I’ll never try another Dior cosmetic again.

Sometimes I’ll blend them with another shade to make it lighter but never on it’s own. Unless cream counts, I overuse cream colored liner and shadow

My current priming routine helps keep my face very dewy during these dry winter months. I’ve been using the Nivea Men’s Sensitive After Shave Balm (thanks, various youtubers!) and then putting MAC’s Strobe Cream on top, all over my face. The Nivea Balm keeps me moisturized throughout the entire day, though it does make you smell very man-ish. I’m single, so the scent lets me pretend for a few minutes that I’m not, har har. The Strobe Cream adds a really nice glow to my skin, but it’s not as full-on as using one of Becca’s liquid highlighters all over the face. It’s also surprisingly moisturizing. This little combo keeps my makeup looking fresh for most of the day, and it keeps my skin from looking dull and dry.

Snow angels? yes! in fact as I speak the east coast is getting about 4 feet of snow today! Favorite primer: hourglass and nars (face and eyes, respectively). I had an incident of horrible allergic reaction to clinique’s acne line back when i was 16. My entire face and neck itched all night the first night I used it but it didn’t occur to me to get up to check and wash it off. I got up the next morning and couldn’t recognize myself in the mirror. Truly a horrifying experience for a teenage girl. My face had swollen to 3x its size and I could barely see because my eyes were that swollen. Took 4 full days to return to normal, when I walked back to the Macy’s clinique counter and returned the set. The lady didn’t believe me. I should’ve taken a picture. But I was so traumatized at the time I didn’t want to ever look back at myself looking like that–so no photos to commemorate the occasion unfortunately. *sigh… I have since never touched another clinique skincare or makeup product. I still do not know exactly what ingredient caused the allergic reaction.

I’m jealous of people that have seen the aurora borealis! I’d absolutely love too. I kind of want to go outside right now and make a snow angel/snowman in this foot of snow but…then I remember how cold that’d be!

Yesterday besides the noise they make they threw fireworks too.
So our Doggies had to sleep in our bedroom. I don’t think they are aware of the whole pregnancy thing. They wanted to jump one me a few times last night. but I have to take them off to, My belly is making gas in it gives me pain and gives me back pain too.

Every time I get on the computer my cat, Jon Snow, walks across the keyboard. He jumps before I can grab him and lands usually on a function key and screws up my browser. The other day he rotated everything 25 degrees. I had to get on my phone to figure out how to undo it. Sometimes I can grab him before he climbs up, it doesn’t matter though. I put him down, he jumps back up. He’s just determined to be the center of attention so I feel your pain.

We have e.l.f. here but they release very few of the products you have in the US and we can’t order from the US page so there are many exciting products we can’t get here BUT the e.l.f. Poreless Face Primer has recently arrived and I am LOVING it on a big scale. With or without bb cream or foundation it gives a smooth, fresh look and fills in fine lines and minimizes appearance of pores just like it says it does. The price is not a cheap as the US but still the cheapest we can get in EU, and of course no animal testing, a win-win all around.

I’m hoping to win the Sephora gift certificate. I actually had returns I was going to make to Sephora yesterday (was 2 blocks away) when the snow came early and hard on Friday (DC area). It was so slippery just walking 10 feet, I decided to catch a rare available taxi (SUV) and went home (wise, but missed the returns and shopping I thought I’d get to before the storm started). Now I’m at the bottom of a hill that won’t be plowed for days – in the middle of a blizzard – with 2 feet of snow so far (DC area). Very grateful to still have power – and using the time to get things done (and play with makeup). My family just got out of town in time to go to Disneyworld. I’m thrilled they’re having a good time. Once we’re plowed out, I’ll be heading to Sephora and Bloomie’s for holiday returns (and maybe be lucky enough to have a gift certificate to spend).

I hope everybody is warm and safe.

Love the look of purple shadow with my pale blue eyes and dark red hair (doesn’t seem as harsh as a dark grey or navy against my eyes) but finding the perfect dark aubergine-plum-silver lilac combo has been my holy grail for years! Bare minerals came close with a dark purple shadow that I doubled as a liner but that’s as close as I’ve come.

The doctor said it looks like he’s going to be trying to “keep up” with his brother since he’s so strong on his tummy and always trying to crawl down to the good stuff when holding him upright. Colin was a little slower to get mobile, so it should be interesting to see how Erik turns out. 🙂

My friends and I were walking to the train station one night and we saw that the sky was tinted green and purple. We were really confused, but we looked it up and found out that Belfast is far enough North to see the Northern Lights! It was really neat, though it wasn’t as visible if we would have traveled to Scandinavia.

I don’t have a favorite primer but so far I think I like Tarte’s primer the best.. I like that it’s non-greasy.

White eye shadow, yes! Especially as a browbone or inner corner highlight. Products I always break- chanel nail polish caps, Tom ford nail polish brush(when you use the overcap to tighten, the force breaks the top of the brush. don’t do this!!!), and butter London Lippy Tinted Lip balms are too soft for the lipstick packaging, they need to be in a twist up tube because they always break.

I live in Banff, Alberta and we see the Aurora Borealis all the time here. One night I was woken up by a super bright blue light beaming in my window. I looked out to make sure the aliens weren’t coming 😉 and saw that it was the Northern Lights. They aren’t usually intensely blue like that but I guess conditions were just right for a super blue beam of light. It lasted about 30 seconds and then went back to the normal less intense yellow/green.

My roommates and I all went running out into the snow last night to make snow angels and dance on snowbanks (because grown ups can have fun too!). All the winter buzz has left me wanting to incorporate the snowy magic into my makeup routine- I have been using a white eyeliner under my eyes, a some of the magic greys and silver from my Naked Smokey, and finishing with some sparkly white shadow on the inner edges. Who knew icy makeup could be so glam? 🙂

I’ve tried it on myself but I’m very fair so it hardly shows at all. But I love wearing white eye shadow base before I apply eye shadow. I let a little of the base show at the top and it makes a nice highlight, as well as protect my shadow from creasing.

I hope that your pregnancy is going well and don’t bother trying to get your cat to stop cuddling with you. Cats are persistent and, when they want to cuddle, no force on earth will stop them. In my case, what happens is that my cat just magically appears on my lap and no amount of shoving or pleading will get her to move until she’s darn well ready.

Anyway, I tried it for 3 days and my skin broke out so bad that it only cleared with Acne medication! It took close to 4-5 months to completely clear up. Really liking the Clinique superprimer universal face primer, it’s just a lovely basic primer that’s not silicone based and is slightly hydrating, and it’s fragrance free!
For the days when I wanna look extra glowy, I love the L’oreal magic lumi light infusing primer, it gives you dewy skin without being the least bit shimemry.

    Hi Karen,
My current primer is Smashbox – but I have tried the MUFE Step One for oil control – and I am returning it – I really did not like it. It made my skin feel awful. I’m kind of new to primers I’ve not used many. I actually wrote and asked you about them, but I never got a reply.
I have had a reaction to make up – my favorite concealer the Fit Me ones, they make my under eye area sting like mad. Really bums me out – I’d used them for several months and loved them, and all of the sudden — they start irritating me. I’m using Master Conceal now by Mabelline – that I saw was recommended by different girls on Youtube. I’m going to try the Sephoria ones as soon as I get the money.

I tend to go through a revolving door of primers that I get through samples or beauty boxes. Right now I’ve got Benefit’s POREfessional, which I’ve used before and really like. It’s nude colored, light and not too silicone-y for my normal skin that get’s a little shiny around my T-zone sometimes.

Hi Karen! Love reading about you &Tabs? We got a little snow here in SC but it’s melted now. It was nice to have Friday off from work! I did make snow angels as a kid growing up in New England. I don’t have one favorite primer- I was looking through all mine and it seems like they all have the same main ingredients, so maybe that’s why. The only makeup product that really bothered me was an Anastasia mascara from back when they used to make mascara– it made my eyes itch and burn so bad.

I’ve always wanted to make an snow-angel, but when we finally do get some snow I always feel more comfy on the sofa with a book and a cup of tea. I suppose if I waved a little bit with my arms I’d make a sofa-angel which sounds rather neat, plus I wouldn’t get wet (unless I spill that tea).

When I took it off my face was a mess, literally chemical burnt, like I had a terrible sunburn. Anything. I’ve started feeling uncomfortable too. 19 1/2 weeks now and I started having contractions yesterday. Yikes. I worked on my feet for 10 hours (coaching a robotics competition. So dorky but fun!) so I think I just over did it. They had me take three Motrin and sit on my butt the rest of the day (gladly) and I feel better today. I hope you are well and drying dry! Have you ever made a snow angel? Yes. Growing up in Minnesota, I think it’s obligatory.

Do you ever wear white eyeshadow or eyeliner? I own a couple white eyeliners, but I can’t say I’ve ever done much more than try them on. I think I may have used them on the waterline occasionally.

A product (makeup or otherwise) that you’re always breaking? Twist up eyeliners. I think I press them too hard.

Have you ever had an allergic reaction to a piece of makeup or skincare? Nope, knock wood.

I made snow angels with my kiddo during the first (and currently only) storm of our season a few weeks ago. I don’t typically wear them but the last primer I tried was the BECCA Ever-Matte and I hated it – pilling galore on me!

The overacheiver in me is going to attempt to hit all of your suggested topics:

Your comment can be about anything at all, but here are some ideas if you’re stuck:

Have you ever seen the Aurora Borealis? Not thus far, but it’s definitely a bucket list goal. Too gorgeous to not experience in person.
Have you ever made a snow angel? Absolutely!!! As a NY girl it’s an institution when there’s beautiful untouched powder like the ton we got yesterday. Last time I made one was the blizzard of 1996 when I was in JHS.
Do you ever wear white eyeshadow or eyeliner? I tried the whole white eyeliner thing back in the early 2000’s, but I thought I looked constantly surprised so it didn’t stick.
A product (makeup or otherwise) that you’re always breaking? Always breaking brow pencils. I press to darn hard and whoops.
Have you ever had an allergic reaction to a piece of makeup or skincare? OMG. Can we just say I realized I was allergic to Benzoyl Peroxide in the most horrible fashion when trying Proactive. I broke out in a rash all over my face that took two weeks to heal and resembled the mumps, or so I was told. Most recently I developed a hive as soon as I applied the KVD Lock It Foundation which made me uber sad.?
What’s your current favorite primer? I’m currently liking the tiny sample of the MUFE Skin Equalizer better than my stand by Laura Mercier Oil-Free Primer. Still in search of the “perfect” one.

Me and my two sisters bond over make-up… a lot.

I’m visiting my sister in March (she moved to Australia 6 years ago, so we always try to keep in touch via WhatsApp and Skype). She’s getting married and so we’re all going over there, all the way from Canada. (I’ve never been on a plane before so wish me luck!) She usually comes to visit us every year or so. My other sister lives in Toronto, so I get to see her more often. Basically we always talk about make up to each other and we always purchase and try out new products after reading reviews first. We share our own thoughts and reviews with each other, which is really nice!! Then when we finally meet, we bring all of our new make up products that we liked and we try out each others (never mascaras though!) and if we end up liking it as well then we purchase it for ourselves!
But when we go to Sephora together… we pretty much go make-up crazy.

It’s a fun thing that we both do since i’m limited to how much I can talk about make-up with my friends (they don’t really care for it at all). Plus going on here and reading all the updates on make-up and the new spring collections are making me super excited!!

that’s so what my cat would want to do. she sleeps on my chest every night curled up and sometimes wakes me up by licking my eyelids, which is super sweet, but…

i haven’t had an allergic reaction to anything, but my skin is sensitive so i’ve had all kinds of burning, itching reactions. bleh.

a product that I always break are those damn iPhone chargers! the protective coating breaks and then wires start sticking out, it’s a mess! (I guess I’m not the one physically breaking them, still counts though, right?!)

Yes I did one night See The Aurora Borealis way up north when I visiting Canada 15 years ago. It was as if the night sky was dancing in magic. It Was Beautiful Like Something Out Of A Dream 🙂

From one makeup and cat lover to another, my favourite (eyeshadow) primer is NARS smudge proof eyeshadow base!

I am currently loving the YSL Touché Eclat Blur Primer. It blurs and makes my skin ready for makeup.

Hi Karen!! My birthday is Saturday, I’m going to be 32 this year! For some reason I’m all mid-life crisis about it, I have been hoarding skincare including oils, masks, serums. Sephora is my favorite beauty destination, I would love a gift card to support my makeup/skincare habit! ?

Though I still use my MUFE primer for special occasions, I have been loving the Nivea post shave balm as a primer. Its like 6 bucks for over 3 oz and keeps my makeup in place for the whole day. It is almost holy grail worthy…if only it could minimize my pores!

Sometimes I wear a white shadow by Bobbi Brown along my brow bone. I want to say it’s called Alpine but I think I’m only thinking that because I’ve been wearing a lot of OPI’s Alpine polish since it’s winter up in here.

p.s. Tabs is just excited about Baby Girl coming soon and wants her to be comfortable with him so he’s trying to be close so she recognizes his purr when she arrives 🙂

Somehow I ended up with about 6 different samples of primers, so hopefully at this rate I’ll never have to buy one!

Yes, I usually white eyeliner and white eyeshadow, I have to wear white because I am Asian so my eyes are small and the white eyeliner enhances my eyes to a bigger effect lol

I grew up in the Yukon, so I spent my whole childhood taking the Aurora Borealis for granted! As I got older, I started to appreciate the winter skies a lot more.

No, I don’t wear white eyeliner or eyeshadow, white is very unflattering on me unfortunately.

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
