This week, while browsing the web, I came across a post that said that June is Acne Awareness Month.
Did you guys know about this? Because I, your high oily-ness, did not.
The post is an interesting roundup from the writers of the site about their acne, and it gave me a fair bit of amusement and some feelings of solidarity, because as someone who writes often about skincare and beauty and is in constant awe of makeup and the skills that people use to apply it, I’m also in CONSTANT awareness of my acne.
(Did you just think of Mad Eye Moody yelling CONSTANT VIGILANCE? Because I did. #harrypotternerd4life.)
Getting back to Acne Awareness Month…I don’t know exactly how I feel about it. I feel like there are already “awareness” and “appreciation” months for everything nowadays. One could say that it would bring better awareness to taking care of your skin, but wait — September is already National Skin Care Awareness Month (and May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month).
I’ve waxed poetic about my acne before, but it’s been flaring up more than usual lately, especially around my chin. The moisturizers and oils that (ironically) served me well for a few months aren’t helping anymore, and I’m still looking for something to use this summer (Murad has some very helpful articles on their website in honor of Acne Awareness Month).
Acne-wise, the things I struggle with the most are whiteheads, papules, pustules, and the occasional cyst (so, SO attractive).
I would like to think that sometimes I’m less aware of my acne, for my own sake, but when it comes down to it, it’s usually constantly in my awareness. It’s always there because, well, it’s front and center. It’s the first thing I notice when I wake up in the morning and the last thing I address before I go to bed.
Did you know that June is Acne Awareness Month? And what do you think of the constant cycle of awareness/appreciation months?
Becky says
I had no idea that there was such a month! Gosh, it’s a nightmare. My skin is better these days, but I still get the occasional very angry flare up and it is just horrible. I think we get a little used to looking at Insta-beauties these days and forget we all get spots!!

There are way too many awareness months for me to keep track of, so I didn’t know about this one either. But even without a month for it I am constantly aware of my acne, especially throughout and now after my pregnancy, as it has flared up due to the hormonal changes.
Nivedita says
I find it ironical because it is this June that out of nowhere my acne situation has flared up and I am actually ‘aware of acne’ now. 😀
Carolina Braina says
Honestly, your skin doesn’t look that bad in the picture. It’s nothing a bit of concealer can’t hide!
Marcella Yakalis says
Thank you, Carolina! It has gotten a little better, but usually putting concealer on top of it actually hurts, because of the way they are inflamed. I cover up what I can.
Kiss & Make-up says
It always goes in phases with me. Today is a good day. The previous three days were bad. And yes, it really does affect your mood, I can relate.
Cherie says
Very interesting. No, I didn’t know it was Acne Awareness month. I’m pretty aware of my adult acne year-round and even more when I’m under a lot of stress!
Marcella Yakalis says
Same, Cherie!

#harrypotternerd4life! Me too!i suddenly became aware of acne since 3days after months.. it maybe due to my new dior nude air serum foundation or my new sunscreen. .or hormones. .hmmm.. i don’t know! Boohoo..so annoying. .
Kristen says
I feel like some products work great for me for some time and then suddenly my skin doesn’t like them anymore. So annoying! I’ve had really good luck with Lush products, particularly with their moisturizer and facial scrubs. They’re all natural and they don’t test on animals!
Marcella Yakalis says
As weird as this sounds lush products confuse me, there are so many options! I do love their soaps, etc. I just ordered a Paula’s Choice sample kit to try and change my routine up!

I did not know it was Acne Awareness Month. I hate acne. I have my good and my bad days. Your chin doesn’t look bad at all.
Marcella Yakalis says
It’s calmed down a little bit in the last few days, so I’m thankful for that!
Rachel R. says
I’m 46, and still get acne, so I’m all too aware. I’m currently healing up a breakout.
Diane says
June is also Migraine awareness month, and as a sufferer of both acne and migraines, I can relate. It’s kind of nice to have these awareness months, but there are so many conditions and causes that unless something personally affects you or someone you love, chances are you won’t ever hear about it. Sort of the opposite effect I think the creators of awareness months are going for, I think.
Marcella Yakalis says
I am a migraine sufferer as well! I had no idea it was migraine awareness month as well! I agree that there are definitely too many to keep track of, unless it affects you.
Cathy says
I’ve had cystic acne on my chin since my 20’s. Finally went on accutane because everything else stopped working. It was the best thing I ever did for my skin. I did have to do a second round 17 years later due to (ahem) “hormonal changes” but it wasn’t as nearly as harsh as the first round and I’m all cleared up again. Have you ever tried Proactive? It works well but it is expensive and there are also vitamins that can help clear up your skin (except for the cysts). To answer your question I did not know about acne awareness month-I hate acne!!
