Hmm… Well, of course, the pandemic has changed almost everything in terms of how far I’ll go on a regular basis with my hair and makeup, but even before March, my hair and makeup style were growing increasingly casual. I call it more “easygoing.” I primarily wear neutrals these days (basically because they’re easier to blend than more exciting colors like bright purples and greens), with subtle variations on classic elements, like winged liner or smoky lids, and my hair is usually up in some kind of bun or ponytail/braid variation that’s purposefully a little wild with a sleek element or two.
I guess that’s one way to describe it… Mostly messy (LOL!), with pockets of smoothness here and there.
Really, I lean on the classics, but I’ll still make an occasional foray into colorful crazytown.
I actually look at old makeup pics of myself and am actually kind of astonished that I had the wherewithal to do elaborately colorful, fun looks. If I could, I’d go back in time and high-five myself for my efforts, ha ha ha!
For now though, I like my current hair and makeup style (notwithstanding the pandemic-inspired modifications and compromises).
How about you? How would you describe your current hair and makeup style?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

VERY casual over here too! I rarely wear makeup anymore (I feel like I say that every time I comment on a post, haha!) but on the rare occasion that I do, it’s a few swipes of Laura Mercier caviar stick in Au Naturel (love love love this product!) with maybe a dab of eyeshadow from the Chanel Clair Obscur palette blended over top if I’m feeling extra. Top that off with a little bit of Mac Coffee eyeliner (never winged, always blended/smudged), mascara, fill in my brows. Very sheer base (I’ve used the Nars TM for years but recently switched to Sheer Glow as I felt the TM was oxidizing), cream blush, powder, maybe a tinted lip balm.
When I type it all out like that it looks like a lot, but it’s really not! Especially like you, when I go back and look at old pictures and think of how I would NEVER have left the house without makeup a few years ago.
Oh, and my hair hasn’t been touched since before the pandemic…it’s a hot mess! Lol!

I am with you on classic and simple. I just got my hair cut to right at shoulder length, and I let it air dry, so it is kind of wavy, and I don’t do anything to it. Once I use up what I have, I will give up buying powder anything – I am all about cream blush and cream eyeshadow sticks. I stick to neutrals and keep it clean, simple, and streamlined, not just because it is easier, but because it encourages me to buy fewer products and work with less. At 58, I think liquid foundations and cream blush and eyeshadow work better for me, and it is so much less messy! I love your current look! That is exactly the look I am going for now.

Daphne I am 50 and realizing I really love the way cream products rest on my skin. I think I’m with you. Once I use up my powder blushes and shadows, I’m moving into cream territory.

Another “woo hoo” for creams here!

Hair: Lowkey as always. Makeup: FUN colorful to lazy makeup days depending if I am in office or home working!
I normally never style my hair so it is pulled back in a low ponytail usually and down if not sweaty hot in sunny FL. Since I can wear nonconservative makeup at home or in office if no clients, I am definitely falling in love with makeup again and experimenting!

Basic! I decided I am going to grow out my blonde highlighted hair to my natural color which is a light brown. I got a haircut at the lake over the weekend (my boyfriend’s cousin is a hairdresser and she cut it right there on the deck!) so I don’t expect to be needing to go to the salon anytime soon. I wear very simple makeup to work, mostly foundation, mascara, concealer, and bronzer. On the weekends I barely wear any makeup since we don’t really go “out” anymore!
kellly says
Um, mostly “nonexistent”. Most days I don’t put on makeup at all, or just some lipstick in a neutral, brownish color so I don’t look completely washed out. Sometimes I will fix my hair, which is short and only takes some fluffing up and maybe a little spray. If I’m going out of the house, I generally try to put some concealer and mascara at the least so I don’t look too scary.

This is a great Sean-Evans-Hot-Ones-question kinda question. 🙂
OF course with that big caveat (Pandemic Times), I’ve been kind of all over the place, experimenting with wild colors, graphic liner, makeup product layerings, etc. based on my YouTube binges, but in my “travels” I come back to minimalist, simple. Makeup: clean, classy, dewy. Hair: either down and casual (no flat ironing or blow outs or even product) or “yoga practice hair.” I’m growing out my bangs to get to a very long wavy lob and I’ve been seeing more crisp white strands coming to the fore — I may not need that balayage after all! lol
I don’t have many performance/showgirl career pics but I do that, too, where I look back at the looks I pulled off and compliment myself on actually how nice they looked. 🙂

Performance makeup is an art, right?! I remember doing contour back in the early 2000s for the stage!

My first thought is “mask du jour.”
Granted it’s summer now and I have a tan against my skin doctor’s orders and I tend to wear less makeup in the summer. It’s hotter than Hades in Blue Hill this summer. Further proof that we’re just a few weeks away from locusts descending from the sky.
But, I digress. I’m hardly wearing any makeup.
Back in March when all this started. I was so careful to start the day with a full face so things felt “normal” but now I’m not bothering and that worries me a bit.
I think, why do it? If I go anywhere no one is going to see much of it because of the mask.
To compensate, I am trying to take pains with my hair so I don’t look like too much like a Frumpy Fran. I blow it out and use product and use an iron or a hot brush.
I am 50 so I can’t get away with looking effortlessly casual like I could 25 years ago. Now without makeup and hair, I look like I’m at the apex of a major midlife crisis.

I started doing my makeup again and it felt really good to do so after a while of nothingness. That little bit of time just brightening your skin just does wonders. It’s been pretty neutral with pops of color with eyeliner if I do it. Otherwise, I’m getting reacquainted with my blushes and lipsticks. As for my hair, I meant to dye it a while ago but I’ve since let my grays grow out. When I have an in-person meeting again, I’ll consider it. But for now its just growing grays, and trimming regularly.

Not sure I can sum it up in one word. Makeup depends on the day. Usually something creamy and/or moisturizing and sheer to light medium. Mascara and liner if I can work up the energy. Combed brows. I wear lipstick at home because it gets wiped off before the mask goes on.
My hair touches my shoulders and lays on the back of my neck driving me crazy. It’s thinning (stress?) and straggly. So I usually twist it up into a french twist or messy bun or pony tail, just to get if off my neck. But I think all that is leading to breakage. Sigh.
I missed the window where salons were open here. Dear Daughter kept telling me it still wasn’t a good idea and I guess she was right because they’re closed again. I may ask her to have a go at my ends just so they don’t look so bad.
Dear Husband is taking Dear Daughter camping for the remainder of this week. While he’s gone I’m hoping to pull out all the powders, blushes and shadows I have and ruthlessly toss things. I may regret it. But at least I won’t feel like I’m drowning in makeup stuff.

It changes on a daily basis! Sometimes nothing, sometimes the basics, sometimes copying a you tube tutorial or something KJH did. Wearing a bright red lip right now at home to fight the blahs. Been loving creams lately now that I don’t need my makeup to last for 14 hours. I feel better when I’m wearing makeup so making an effort this week to go ahead and do a fulllll face. Am very much missing bright lipsticks though. And will likely miss dark this fall.
Hair is pretty simple, braid, ponytail, bun, half up. I would definitely categorize it as messy and the humidity here isn’t helping.
Karen says
I’ve been loving creams lately too! Remember the Stila Convertible Colors? I’ve just rediscovered them and they’re so good, especially if you like your blush to look effortless.
Jade says
I don’t think I’ve tried anything from Stila other than the liquid lipstick, but I loveeee the tower 28 blush. Waiting to get the shimmer free highlighter for a vib sale.
Karen says
Those look pretty! Are they easy to blend?

My current hair is long (haven’t cut it since December), so it’s black and a little past the middle of my back. Since I’ve been working from home since the lockdown began in March (I work in Information Technology), my hair is either in a bun, ponytail, or sometimes will use my curling wand or flat iron, in the case my coworkers want to video conference. I think the lockdown has made my hair healthier (not sure if due to better diet or not using hot tools on it so much, maybe not washing it as often!)
The only makeup I wear is a little concealer under the eyes, some eyeliner and tinted lip balm (Maybe some blush/bronzer if I’m going to Walmart or commissary shopping, lol).
My style is a cotton top (from the Loft outlet or Banana Republic, as those are the main 2 stores at Folsom Outlets I shop at, in those rare shopping moments) with my addidas track pants or shorts everyday (when you video conference, nobody sees what you’re wearing on the bottom! I live in the Sacramento area, and it’s been 100 degrees(or near that) A LOT lately.
Karen says
Hi Catherine!
Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog (or MBB for short)! I used to live in the Sacramento area too (Davis, which is where I went to school), so I know what you mean about hot. At least it’s a dry heat, right?
Marcia says
Since I go into work, I wear neutral color eyeshadows. Lately though, I haven’t been wearing lip products since I’m wearing a mask. I usually go colorful crazy town on the weekends, LOL. I’ve been growing out my hair the last few years and curl it. Last week, I used the flat iron.
Karen says
Hi Marcia,
My lip products have been pretty much limited these days too — just a little bit of liquid lipstick (I find the ones by Honest Beauty don’t transfer onto my mask) during the day if I’m feeling it and at night just good ol’ lip balm!
Nikki Wogoman says
My makeup style changes every day, and my hair’s in a neck-length bob with the frontmost piece on each side at chin-length, with my usual long wispy bangs. It’s a bit grown-out now, but when I first got it in June it was cut to the length and style Mariska Hargitay had halfway through season 9 of SVU [she’d had a pixie at the beginning of that season, but I don’t look good with a pixie, so I took her halfway-grown-out point (specifically from “Authority,” the episode where Robin Williams guest-starred as a radical anti-authority activist) and asked for that style].
Savannah says
I’m about the same. I really lightened up what I used to wear on my eyes and prefer a more natural, lightly defined look. I think it looks better on me, too. I don’t wear makeup to work anymore (not worth my time tbh) and save it for weekends or days off where I can enjoy putting in the old face paint lol. As for hair? I usually just keep it up and out of my face but I need a hair cut (it’s been 8 months since my last) and I’m craving a long side bang to play around with on occasion.
Kim says
Have I told you lately how awesome your lashes look? Your lashes look awesome. HAHA!
I’ve always been pretty basic and casual with the makeup but now I’ve dropped the tinted sunscreen and blush unless I have a meeting where we’ll be distanced and mask-free (very rare). My eye routine is the same – mascara, liner and brow pencil.
I’ve been letting the ends of my hair air-dry for quite a long time to keep the elderly locks as healthy as possible, but I almost always used a volumizing product and blow-dried the crown and bangs. Now I just wash, comb and head to work where it all air dries. It doesn’t look fabulous but it’s not awful either. And it’s certainly healthier. I’ll often throw it up in a messy, bunnish-looking style, too, because we’ve been lucky to have a nice, hot summer!
Karen says
That’s the magic of lash growth serum at work!
Funny that you mention the eye shadow combo of mascara, liner and brow pencil, because that’s been my minimum eye makeup look as of late!
Kim says
I know! It really has made a dramatic difference in your lashes. They’re lush! 🙂 I did pull out all the stops with some shadow the other day but I can’t make it work anymore. My lids are just too droopy and crepey now. Just wait until I get that surgery! 😉
Karen says
It’s definitely a challenge with hooded eyes so I feel ya! I *love* that you pulled out all the stops though!
Chelsea says
I’m wearing lipstick more, surprisingly! Makes me show up better on video calls. I work from home full time now which means lots of video calls.
I cut off A LOT of hair in June – cut it all one length at my shortest layer so it would grow out better in case salons shut down again. I usually do something half up half down – I have some cute clips and sometimes I do small lace braids to pull it back.
Karen says
Lipstick makes a huge difference on camera. So does blush, too!
Wait, did you cut off all your hair yourself?
Rachel Runyan says
Colorful, as always, for both.
