Sure, with stuff from the kitchen. I’ve done it a few times, partly out of sheer curiosity, and partly because I like to cook and experiment with food!
The first time was back in the day when I was a teenager, after I’d read about homemade skin care in a magazine (I think it was Seventeen).
The story had recipes in it for homemade face masks, toners, cleansers and things like that, and I used it to make my very own face wash with milk and lemon juice.
It smelled divine and worked well, but I eventually got tired of having to squeeze all of those lemons, so I quit doing it after about two weeks and went back to my Neutrogena bar soap, which, BTW, was all the rage in the ’90s.
These days, sometimes when I’m cooking and have the olive out out I’ll make my own lip scrub by mixing some into a thick paste with granulated sugar. Then I’ll scrub my lips with it. And uh…I may or may not end up eating a little of it when I do. 🙂
Have you ever tried making homemade skin care? What did you make, and how did it turn out?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
I did, I was obsessed with it when I was around 12. my mother had a book on homemade skincare and I would experiment and mix the whole weekend. Pretty soon though my hormonal acne kicked in and I went to the dermatologist for prescriptions and pharmacie skincare.

Not from scratch but from boring products that don’t bring me much joy, especially from The Ordinary.

I tried making my own mask with avocado and egg whites and some other ingredients around the kitchen. But it’s not worth the hassle, ha!

Aw, when I was younger I was all about this stuff!! I would pour over books from the library and try whatever I could with the very small amount of funds I had. I’ve made all sorts of things… clover lip balm (kinda really loved it, if I remember correctly), raspberry leaf hair toner, sugar face scrub… I’ve used baking soda as a scrub and a deodorant (which I don’t do anymore, since it can chemically burn you, and baby, I’ve been burned), beer and vinegar as hair toners, avocado oil as a cleanser and moisturizer… and all sorts of other things, lol. It’s a running joke – my husband makes fun of me for constantly putting food in my hair or on my face.
I guess I’m the only one who currently does it. I definitely use like tumeric and coconut oil masks, tone my face with a water and ACV mixture and use lemon interchangeably when i have dark spots. I use coconut oil and vitamin e under my eyes at night. I havent compared them really to what specialty products do, but they work for me!
I did it once when I was a teenager. It was tomato-based, I think it was a mask? Anyways, it turned moldy in a couple days and I gave up!

My mom and I used to make olive oil and sugar body scrubs with different essential oils and things for fun! That’s about it though.
Yes! I”m 24 week pregnant and nothing, I say nothing worked for my itchy skin. I went online and got come recipes and came up with my own concoction for a thick balm. It’s been a real skin saver for me. If I want to make my own exfoliant, I’ll take whatever cleanser I have and add some salt to it.
I went no ‘poo for a while, used apple cider vinegar for conditioner. I don’t recommend it, I smelled like salad dressing. My kid makes all kinds of lip balms, and she remakes those terrible EOS lip balms into balms that really work.
I’ve made my own soaps, salt scrubs, sugar scrubs, lip balms, and oil blends. I used to make a lot of candles and soaps, but I didn’t want to sell them and I started acquiring more scents, molds, etc. than I had room for so I eventually gave it up.
Yes, Karen, I make my own soaps, bath bombs, lotions, lip balm, sugar & salt scrubs, etc. I’ve been doing this about 2 years now, but have only sold to friends & family. I’m participating in my first craft show next weekend. Wish me luck!
I have made my own Vitamin C serum- but I’m back to buying it cause it doesn’t oxidize so fast! The diy serum is only good for about 2 weeks. 😉
Someone on Reddit mentioned melting together Shea butter and neem oil together in a double boiler and using it and I tried and it just did not melt together we’ll. Also, neem oil smells AWFUL.
I used to do the old aspirin mask thing that was really popular a lot. But now I stick to purchased skincare products.
I have tried mayo on hair, beer on hair for shine. The mayo had to be washed like 4 or 5 times to remove the stench which cancelled the hydrating properties promised. The beer… no shine. I tried raw pineapple on face and left it 10 minutes; I had very soft skin but never use again… it(acid) burned me. I use sugar as a scrub sometimes. I want to make my own lip balm since The Honest Company discontinued its and it was amazingly good(not waxy and gross like Burt’s Bees). I use avocado oil or olive oil as a moisturizer while in the kitchen so that I don’t get lotion on the food while cooking since ya know dish detergent is really harsh on hands. My bro actually uses the avocado pulp as a moisturizer… don’t think he knows he could just use the oil, ha ha.
