Well…sometimes! — but it really depends on where I am and who I’m with. Like, if I’m playing with a colorful palette at home, listening to music and sitting on my bedroom floor, and I do a bright, shimmery blue-green eye, and then step outside to get some fresh air and El Hub or my neighbor sees me, they don’t even bat an eye anymore because they’re so used to seeing me in various states of crazy makeup, so I don’t feel silly at all around the house.
Or if I’m out someplace where I’m surrounded by other people of all ages wearing dramatic makeup, like at a MAC or a Sephora, then I don’t feel out of place, but…if I am someplace where everyone else is wearing low-key neutrals or (GASP!) no eye makeup at all, then yeah, I’ll feel a little silly rollin’ up in a blown-out reddish bronze smoky eye.
It wasn’t always this way, though. When I was in my 30s, I never felt silly because of my makeup, no matter what.
But everything changes, right? My makeup style is evolving, and that’s cool too. But there is still (and always will be) a part of me that loves colorful rainbow eyes.
How about you? Do you ever feel silly/out of touch/old wearing bright or colorful eye makeup?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I LOVE bright crazy colors with a fantastic wing and a splash of glitter! I love bold lips too! And yes, I feel strange going to the grocery store or running errands with my unicorn face. But when I go on a date with my hubs, I go for the bold darker smokies. I’m not one for going clubbing anymore (too old I think!). So, glitter shades don’t usually make it into my “out of the house” life. But sometimes, I sneak a tiny subtle splash in the middle of my lid. But, maaaann, I love it so much!

I literally forgot it was Friday. I’m not even sure how that’s possible but I was so happy to see your TGIF. 🙂 Also, you know I love that eye look – I think it’s possibly my favorite that you’ve done. It was a big deal for me to tightline with black liner this AM before finishing off with my usual soft brown, but I do appreciate the color on others. The last time I was in Sephora, the dude cashing me out had rainbow eyebrows – it was quite cool! In contrast, I wore red gloss today and was self conscious all morning. HAHA!

That looks so good on you! I’ve been wearing neutrals lately because it’s just quicker and easier to do, but I prefer bold colorful makeup. When I wear it, I feel fabulous!

I am the only person at my job that wears a full face everyday. The casualness of the south used to really bother me when I first moved here. Now I just do my own thing and don’t worry about anyone else. that includes bright shadows. I love to wear jewel tones on my lower lid and then use a brown that is very close to my complexion in the crease. This way I still get to enjoy color without causing a stir. I also enjoy wearing bold lips in winter, fall spring and summer. In other words…. I ain’t scared!!!! LOL

I wear what I want at home or outside. Wearing makeup is something I enjoy for me. Bright colorful makeup makes me happy so no shame in my game! Strut and Slay is my way, ha ha

Beyond a little bright blue eyeliner on occasion, I don’t really wear super-colorful eye makeup. Smoky purple or green sometimes is about it. I have a relative who is extremely age-inappropriate sometimes. It makes me really conscious of how I dress and do my hair & makeup as I age.

I never felt self conscious about my makeup until I lived in Boston and Northern California, two places where women are sans makeup on the regular. Sometimes I played my difference up for effect, but as I get older it can feel crazypants realizing that I am in a group of moms where I’m wearing more makeup on my face than is on all of theirs combined! I still enjoy a mermaid eye or a bright lip for fun, and a little glitter/shimmer/color pop is a daily must for me(but nothing as colorful as my ’80s clubbing self). If not, I am feeling Why Bother? and forgo it completely like my neighbors. Funny, my daughter and I went back to visit my hometown over the summer and she laughed at how my makeup looked positively neutral and conservative by comparison to all the women there! It is definitely a regional thing.

Where are you from originally, Lorraine? I want to visit this land of makeup!
Lorraine says
San Antonio, Texas. Yeehaw!
Karen says
I must visit this place someday, just so I can admire all of the makeup.
Off topic but I bought Connor her first pair of ballet shoes yesterday. ?
Lorraine says
awwww!!!! good idea. Ballet slippers feel so good, and they are perfect as house shoes. When I was a kid, I signed up for ballet JUST long enough for my mom to buy me unreturnable slippers! Boy was I into shoes. and boy was my mom mad! she could have saved some $$ by just getting me the slippers hahaha

I love doing rainbow liner! I feel very met with it. I feel much weirder in dark smoky eyes.

Never. Oregon is very no makeup, even amongst professionals, or at most, neutral natural. Especially in the suburbs. But I have to do me. I’ll be 49 in a couple weeks, and I still sport brights, glitters, and alternative looks. I’m lucky in that I work from home and can indulge.
Karen says
Happy early birthday, Rachel! Got any plans yet?

I love experimenting w all kinds of colors but I always wind up w some variation of brown !

Story of my life, Michele! lol

Thanks! I don’t have any concrete plans yet. Usually, hubby and the kids take me out to dinner, and we have a cake at home.

I love experimenting in my bathroom and then when I go out is always some version of brown. I sometimes will do a darker smoky brown in the winter, but right now it is brown. Once in a while I will put a peachy color in the middle of my eye, but that’s it. I play around with neutrals! lol

By and large, I kinda don’t care! I know people are probably thinking that I’m too old to wear crazy colors, especially since no one in my office wears much makeup, let alone colorful makeup, but I guess with age comes the ability to not give a damn. We’ll see how it plays out as I get older but for now I’m still wearing whatever I like.

I turned 38 in June and I wear more colorful makeup now than I did five or even ten years ago. I don’t worry about what others think. I wear what I like. If that happens to be green eye shadow then that’s what I wear.
