Bonjour! It’s caturday! And don’t you wish there were such a thing as tiny baby kittens that fluttered on gossamer fairy wings? 🙂

If you’ve stopped by before, have a cup of tea, and welcome back! You know the drill. It’s the Saturday giveaway, so we’ve got all that good stuff going on, but can we talk for a moment first about the phenomenon that is SoulCycle?

I’ve never been myself, but I’ve heard from friends in New York and friends here that once you do it, you totally get into it. Honestly, I hope not…because the classes are kind of expensive. I mean $30 for one spin class? I can put on my tennis shoes and run and up and down the street for free.

Buuut they have an introductory $20 promo price, so I’m going today for the first time with my friend Mary, and we’re going to the 60-minute class, so hopefully I get my money’s worth. I just pray to the makeup gods that my butt will not be numb by the end of it.

Wish me luck, and good luck to you in the giveaway.

Win a $50 gift card from Sephora

  • One (1) Sephora eGift card containing $50 sent to the winner by email (international readers, you may opt to receive $50 sent by PayPal instead).

    • If you’re a natural brunette, have you ever gone blonde? Or the other way around if you’re a natural blonde?
    • My Little Pony, or Care Bears?
    • What are your five personal must-have hair products and/or tools?
    • What’s your favorite kind of eyeliner (kohl pencil, gel pencil, brush-tip liquid liner, felt-tip pen, gel pot or shadow liner)?
  • One entry per person.
  • You must use a valid email address to win.
  • The giveaway ends on Monday, March 2, 2015 at 11:59 PM (Pacific Time). 🙂

I have gone every color you can possibly go with my hair (which is naturally a dark blonde/light brown).. If you are super dark, and you want to go lighter GO TO A SALON. Seriously. If you want to make a big hair change, do not try it at home, do it at a salon. If they mess up, they will fix it, your hair will be much safer.

My five personal must-have hair products are:
-L’Oréal EverPure Volume shampoo & conditioner because my hair is long, but is a bit oily, and I find this combo weightless. I hate it when I feel the heaviness of shampoos and conditioners in my hair!
-Alterna Caviar CC Cream for hair is amazing! I apply this on wet hair and it’s lightly moisturizing but doesn’t weigh my hair down. I also like that it contains heat & UV protection.
-Kérastase Elixir Ultime, it’s a leave-in treatment oil (like MoroccanOil) that I’m loving. Again, lightweight, and takes care of my drier ends. You only need the tiniest bit!
-T3 Featherweight hairdryer, I typically let it air dry for a while, then blowdry for 5 minutes for soft waves. When I do feel like having straighter hair, the T3 can give me straight, shiny, and still voluminous locks in about 10 minutes. My hair is so long – it’s a real accomplishment to have it done so quickly!

I still struggle trying to master the art of liquid eyeliner. I have gotten one step closer with Stila, for sure, but I still need a lot more practice. What I have perfected is my skin care routine. I use the Ole Henrickson African Red Tea foaming face wash with my clarisonic brush. Next up is Ole’s toner and some FAB moisturizer. My everyday face is: primer, a little foundation, M.A.C. Bronzer, grande Lash MD, and some Better than mascara. I could use some new tricks to try out! $50.00 will get me a couple.

Hello! My favorite kind of eyeliner has to be liquid pen – they just are the quickest types. I also like to curl my lashes after lining the eyes, so they tend to withstand the curling a bit better than the other liner types too. Second is gel-pencil. I like Gel, but I don’t usually like to mess with a brush.

as a child my hair was naturally blonde. when it started to get darker as i grew up, i kept it lightened to blonde. then more recently, i have mostly let it be natural, a mostly dark blonde/light brown. but NOW, too many gray hairs are showing up, particularly around my face/temple areas, so this weekend i am going back to blonde (with some colorful accents courtesy of manic panic). i now understand why my mom always colored her hair to “hide the gray.”
i did one time have my stylist go darker with a reddish auburn shade, and i really did enjoy that change. but, i think i’m a blonde at heart.

    Happy Caturday!

I am a natural blonde, now kind of blonde/grey. I tried dying my hair red in high school only to find out you need brown pigment for the red to cling onto or your hair turns pink. So, I was a little ahead of my time as far as colour trends go, having pink hair for a time in the late 80’s. Fortunately folks thought I did it on purpose and was a ‘cool’ kid for a while! Now I just dye my hair to cover the silver. Wahh.

So, I have never had a veggie burger from a restaurant because in the middle of the Midwest it is cow central. The best store to get samples from would probably be Sephora. The only Sephora around here is in a JCPenney. In the last two months, I have bought a clarisonic my one and only purchase yet from Sephora. Have a beautiful day!

As a natural blonde, I’ve only gone to brunette once, in 2009. It looked nice, but in the summer I really wanted to go back to blonde lol! I dyed my hair a chocolate brown color in the winter, but when it was almost summer I felt like it was ‘too dark’. For some reason blonde felt more ‘summery’. Haven’t gone to brunette ever since. Only redhead, for a short period of time. Blonde just suits me the best. 🙂

I never wear it out of the house. Only in the comfort of my own home. Lol

Normal hair tyes can be So damaging and keep the hair so tight and they cause damaGe. So I just use the scrunchie. They keep my hair from breaking off since I like to keep my hair up around the house (it gets in the way)

Best store to get free samples from? Toss up between Nordstrom and Sephora. I like it when either store gives you a ton with a makeup bag. Ulta definitely could add more free samples.

If you’re a natural brunette, have you ever gone blonde? Or the other way around if you’re a natural blonde? I’d look terrible as a full blonde. I’m doing balayage, but it’s hard for the bleach to lift all the color, so it doesn’t get very light.

My Little Pony, or Care Bears? That’s a hard one. But I think My Little Pony. I definitely had more MLP stuff than Care Bears as a kid.

What’s your favorite kind of eyeliner (kohl pencil, gel pencil, brush-tip liquid liner, felt-tip pen, gel pot or shadow liner)? Gel pot!

•I don’t know, I like the samples from Sephora. They are bigger and better than any other stores I’ve experienced anyways.
•I recently discovered that veggie burgers from most places are actually made of very few veggies, and tons of filler 🙁 Which is so despicable in my mind. So I don’t eat them anymore. I’d rather just have some good protein over filler any day.
•I’m a dark mousy blonde, and I’ve died my hair light blonde, like platinum to extra light ash blond. It’s not that it’s difficult to go from lighter to lighter, it’s that I have red undertones, and it’s a biotch sometimes to get past the orange tone that it creates. I’ve found some great hair products to do it through (always use ash, or cool, or beige). Because I don’t use bleach and I won’t ever again. Too harsh on the hair.
    • I never was one for Care Bears, I did love My Little Pony though! Interesting the difference lol.
•A good quality iron (Conair does NOT cut it), hair serum, heat/styling combo (currently loving Tresemme!) wide tooth comb, and Joico’s K pak! (I recently returned to it, and my hair is loooving it again!)
•Wow, tough question. I’ve tried them all, and over the years, loved each one until I didn’t anymore. For me, it’s about staying power without using harsh liquid lines on my supremely oily lids (I prefer to be a bit more natural, liquid is for nights on the town). Right now, I’m loving using a waterproof smudgeproof crayon liner, and topping it with a powder eyeshadow. It’s been staying all day and night, and it’s a lovely soft look!

I’m a natural blonde, but we always want what we don’t have so I have at various times experimented with light brown, dark brown, and red. None really worked on me as well as my natural color, so I always end up back here. These days it’s a bit of a mix of blonde and platinum blonde (i.e. white), but it still looks pretty good so I’m not going to cover it.

I haven’t jumped on the hole colored hair bandwagon although I do have a cousin in beauty college so if she needs a model, I’ll volunteer. My hair has darkened as I have aged. It used to be blonde but now it is more of a light brown. I have tried adding blonde highlights but it failed because it was way too golden blonde.

Ended up with an angled bob to remove the damaged hair. Love the haircut so all turned out well in the end.

OMG Spin classes ..well I can tell you about a spin class, my first and last spinclass…lol!! your but will be good and numb by the end of the class if it’s not on fire…lol!! I was jello legs afterwards. It is super exspensive! See about 8 months ago I told myself that by January of 1015 I was gonna loose 50lbs of some baby weight, plus a little bit of bad eatting choices weight…shhhh!! Anyway I was trying to find a interactive workout session to keep me interested and coming back!! I tried the spin classes, yes they work you hard and get you sweating. But the long run is that it’s bad for your joints and wears out your knees. I decided to start runnning and I do every morning 2 miles, and I do 45mins of cardio every afternoon. I lost 40o f those 50lbs and I hope to be at the 50lb mark by the month of April!! I also gave up soda..wahhh!! Any started making halthier eating choices, this new lifestyle is great! I’m thinner, in shaped and I feel so much better1! So as you commented, running up and down the street is free, and not as hard on your body!!
Have a Great Weekend, I can’t wait to hear how the class goes, good luck you’re gonna need it!!!!!!

I really love the ones by stila! I used to only use pencil liners because I didn’t think I could control a liquid liner and I was afraid I’d look like a crazy lady but those stila ones are pretty idiot proof. And we got her other sons desexed so they won’t turn into feral tom cats.

They were going to a grocery store and they looked so happy to be out and about. Shoppers held on to them until the owner arrived to bring them safely home. As far as the best place to get free samples, I’ve found the Origins store SAs are really helpful and willing to give you little samples. They often also have little giveaways sitting in a pile outside their door. I don’t really know the difference between a kohl or gel or regular eyeliner pencil, but I like the soft kind that comes in automatic pencil form or the kind you still sharpen but has the black plastic kind of tube and not wood. I’ve never used a brush-tip and have never gotten the hang of felt-tip pens. Gel pots are my favorite, but I typically don’t have much time to faff around with them so I only use it for hardcore waterproof eyeliner situations. I really need to up my eyeliner game!

Best store to get free samples from? Definitely Sephora! They give the most generous amount of product!
Who makes the best veggie burger? I’ve never tried a veggie burger. I know BK has one but I think going to BK defeats the purpose of having a veggie burger in the first place lol
If you’re a natural brunette, have you ever gone blonde? Or the other way around if you’re a natural blonde? I’m scared to change my hair color. I feel like only dark hair would flatter me.
My Little Pony, or Care Bears? My little pony all the way! Have you seen it? It’s hilarious. Care Bears are cuter, though!
What are your five personal must-have hair products and/or tools? My GHD flats iron, my Nume blow dryer, MoroccanOil,Chi flat iron spray and my Frederick Fekkai glossing cream! They’ve been my go-to products for the past 5 years.
What’s your favorite kind of eyeliner (kohl pencil, gel pencil, brush-tip liquid liner, felt-tip pen, gel pot or shadow liner)? Kohl pencil. I can’t for the life of me use anything else. I’ll end up looking like a panda.
    Thanks for the opportunity, Karen!

5 must-have hair products? I have thick curly dry hair, so I need a LOT of products! I use Fructis spray gel with the Twin Turbo hairdryer (with diffuser attached) to dry in the PM. Then in the AM I use TIGI Catwalk Curls Rock Amplifier, Focus 21 Splash hair spray (I’ve been using it since the 80’s and it’s the ONLY thing that will hold my hair, my hair absorbs everything else like a sponge) and then I finish it with Frizz-Ease glossing mist.

    Good Afternoon Karen!

So I finally got suckered into all the Beauty Blender hype… After ages and ages of steering clear of them. My initial thoughts were ew, who uses a sponge over and over and over again, growing bacteria and uncleanliness when you can have the luxury of using naturally bristled brushes caress your skin?
Ha! How wrong I was, how wrong I was.

My skin has been extremely dry lately and no brush nor fingers could make any foundation application smooth on my face this past week or so. I did some research, and discovered that yes, I should use a Beauty Blender on my oh so dry skin.
I was so skeptical when I came home and awkwardly stared and this egg shaped sponge in my hand. But I gained some courage (from which end of my brain I couldn’t begin to try and find out) and tried it on my face. Uh, HELLO FLAWLESS SKIN, where have you been all my life!?
And then I even suckered myself into getting the new mini sized BB: SO CUTE! Love them to bits because they get in my under eye area and nose! I even use them for softening harsh eyeshadow lines or blending out my highlighter.

I couldn’t recommend them more!! They’re fab! And oh so squishy and tiny and so cute 🙂

My favorite eyeliner is from Julep, where I normally buy my nail polish. I love their gel eye pencils, they have amazing colors, dry down in about 30 seconds, and then DO NOT MOVE for at least 12 hours unless I remove it. I have bought every color that they make at this point, and multiples of the rich brown and the smoky plum.

I’m naturally blonde and have pretty much gone every other natural colour out there LOL, brown, dark brown, black, red-brown, blue-black. my hair colours and bleaches very well and I have been back blonde for almost 2 years. I was stuck in a cycle where I couldn’t decide what looked best on me so I just have up and went back to my natural haha

Even though I just recently found your blog, let me just say that not only is your blog super cute and well formatted, it is also insightful, fresh and educational (please excuse my nerdiness!). More importantly, it’s amazing to have FINALLY found a beauty guru with the same complexion that I have. It gives me a more personal look into the wonderful perks of having beautiful brown skin, I can’t wait to try out the things you’ve mentioned (even though I’m in my broke-college-student stage teehee).

As for answering one of your suggested comment ideas:
October was when I decided to be 15 again so here I am, bleaching my hair a total of FOUR TIMES to try to get the bright blue I wanted my ends to be. Aaaaand I end up cutting my waist length hair to my shoulders, accidentally making me fall in love with having short, natural colored hair.

I am not crazy about my little pony, but my 17 year old son loves it. I was born with almost white blonde hair, but now, with age, it’s medium to dark blonde. I color and highlight to make it look blonder. I LOVE makeup , but I do not know how to apply any of it properly. Finally, I have never taken a spin class.

One of these days ,I am going to win this Sephora giveaway 😛 😀

The best place to get free samples, would be the Elizabeth Arden counter here!! They are so generous !! If I buy something for 30 dollars, I might even get something worth $10 for free 😉

I love kohl liners! They are mysterious and really make the eyes shine! Mac Teddy is like my HG liner that I unabashedly use on ,my waterline 🙂

I have long waist length hair, and trust me, the best hair product that I have ever used would be the Garnier Long and strong hair serum. Why you ask? Good question 🙂
I cheat and use the serum instead of a hair oil! It gets instantly absorbed by my hair, I wash it off after 3 hours, and it leaved my hair so silky soft! True story!

Good Luck with the class 😀 You are anyways the favorite of Makeup Gods 😉

Mmmm, veggie burgers. Whole Foods has a really nice lentil dal burger in their fresh (prepared) food section. It’s delicious with some tamarind chutney on top. Wegman’s makes a chipotle black bean burger that’s pretty good as well. For a more traditional veggie burger, but one that doesn’t really taste like meat, I like Dr. Praeger’s California veggie burger. Just be sure to pan grill until the outside gets crunchy. As someone who doesn’t like mushrooms, I have to check the ingredients before I buy to make sure the veggie burger doesn’t just taste like compacted mushrooms (I’m talking to you, Gardenburger!). ;-D

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
