Beauty Snacks: Sites of the Day, October 9

October 9th, 2008 by Karen 34 Comments

The Coolest Sticky Notes, Ever

  • If I don’t write stuff down then I don’t remember, so I’ve got Post-It/sticky notes all over the place. These cheeky sticky notes from Knock Knock can keep my boring, yellow Post-Its company. My faves are the You Rock and Or Else pads.

Name that Makeup Compact

  • I live in the ‘burbs now, but I’m a city girl at heart. Last night I spent a good half an hour cruising through photographer Amin Torres’ photo blog featuring pics depicting everyday life in New York City. I couldn’t help but stop at this shot of a woman applying mascara on the subway (been there, done that). Can you guess what compact she’s holding? — ’cause I’m stumped.

Do You Really Need That Extra Oxygen?

  • I’ve always wondered about facial products and spa treatments touting the benefits of extra oxygen. Christine over at 15 Minute Beauty separates fact from fiction and breaks down why we don’t need to be paying for all the extra O2.

Sex and the City: The Font

  • I’m a total font geek, so my eyes lit up when I found this neat slideshow on BBC News featuring fonts from famous movie posters. The Sex and the City movie posters use a font called Trajan, Franklin Gothic was featured in the poster for Dark Knight and Neutraface is the font gracing the new James Bond movie posters for Quantum of Solace. Now I’m soOOoo ready for final Jeopardy’s Font Geek category!

Merging Beauty and Science

  • The New York Times reports that a new “beautification engine” computer program uses a mathematical formula to virtualize more attractive versions of human faces. The Times ran pics of several people’s faces through this “beautification engine.” Can I just say I was not surprised to find that actor James Defranco’s cutie pie mug remained virtually unchanged? Hit me up, James!

125 Foods to Help You Not Look Like a Sausage in Your Bridesmaid Dress

  • I gotta squeeze into a bridesmaid dress for my friend Jen’s wedding next month. Needless to say, my eating habits haven’t been great (chocolate cake, anyone?) lately. I’ve been busy and just shove whatever I can find into my gullet. I have to get back on track, and to help me on my way I’m using this handy dandy article featuring 125 of the best Packaged Foods by Women’s Health magazine. It includes printable lists of healthy drinks, breads and soups to look for at the grocery store. Now I have one less excuse to head to In-n-Out for dinner.

Work that Cape(let)

  • I’ll use any excuse to wear a cape in public. Here’s a really cute knitted capelet I found on Esty. I’d wear this over a white turtleneck in winter or a tank top in the spring.

Hey, ya’ll! Happy, happy, Thursday! I feel genuinely, certifiably NUTS because I woke up at 5:30 this morning. Hello, fourth cup of coffee. 🙂 Anyway, I’m about to put on some makeup… yay! It’s looking like a Beiges de Chanel quad kinda day. What makeup did you reach for this morning?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I love the blog with all the pictures. I just spent awhile looking at pics. I live probably an hour, maybe a little less than that outside of NYC. I moved out here 3 years ago and went there for the first tell and instantly fell in love. Hopefully after I’m done with grad school and all of that I can find a job there because it’s some where I’d totally love to live.

And I had tennis this morning, so I put on tinted moisturizer, I think it was Physicians Formula Organic and some Burts bees. I bought the tinted moisturizer from Target last week, so far so good. No reason to get too made up to go sweat for an hour and a half 😛

    hey karen

i am certified nuts here too!! busy and tired lol

i am a total font dork myself – it was actually my strength in college – while studying graphic design you actually have full on classes all about fonts lol

i was feeling pretty dumpy today and decided to really color my day by using really colorful makeup
my shadows are resembling a mild acid trip (though i have never been on one this is what i would imagine) the colors i used are by the urban decay deluxe shadows fishnet on the outer lid, peace and graffiti layered in the center of my lid and honey in the very inner corner of the lid and some underground in the crease lastly nars highlighting in albatross along my browbone – sounds loud but i blended the heck outta these guys so they look sooooo smooth and candy like added some black mascara and viola instant mood boost lol

    Hi Brittany,

If you end up moving there I will vicariously live through you. I’d love to live there, but my family is here on the west coast and El Hub is not a city person at all (shoot, if he had his way we’d be out in some crazy scary forest).

I’ve been looking for good drugstore tinted moisturizer. How’s the coverage?

    Hi YadiQ,

I would love to take a class on fonts. I’m currently crushing on Garamond!

Your eye look sounds so pretty! And you’re right — blending is the key to keeping brighter shades from looking too loud.

Hope your day eases up a bit… my coffee is really kicking in so I gotta take advantage of my attention span while it’s working at 100% capacity!

Yadi, that’s so random! Wouldn’t it be weird if you found yourself in one of the pics? Sometimes I wonder about all the random pictures I’ve ended up in as background…

LOL, I was hung up on fonts for a while too! Needed to pick out fonts for our wedding invitations – I ended up with a combination of edwardian script and copperplate light that I liked. It is rather conservative though.

As for makeup I just got a couple of goodies at MAC – two eye shadows (Tilt and Satin Taupe) and the 219 pencil brush! Looking forward to playing with them, yay! 🙂

(I do Ashtanga yoga by the way! Not too sore yet, but I feel it coming…)

Rats! I was hoping to astonish you by knowing that compact, but I’m stumped too! The mascara might be Guerlain le Two! 😉 Also, amusingly enough, when I was in high school one of my friends had a dog named Trajan!

I went for my favorite high-work simple eye! MAC Bare Study on the lid, Painterly above the crease to the browbone and then Benefit Skinny Jeans blended on the lid and outer v. It’s a lot of work to blend those babies, but then they stay put all day long! For the final touch I smoked it out a little with Shu iridescent black! Exceptionnel in black, a little Rose Dust on the cheeks and a nude lip finished the look!

I woke up almost as early as you did this morning. I ws having a panic that I’d sent an urgent work email to the wrong email address. Eventually I managed to calm myself down and get back to sleep but only for a little while before the alarm went off.

I’m on a major Smashbox kick at the moment and I got a set from QVC earlier this month, so I was wearing:

Smashbox Photo Finish Light Primer (Love, love, love this!)
Smashbox Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder in Fair
Smashbox blush in Famous (sort of a peachy colour)
    Urband Decay Eyeshadow Primer
Smashbox Eyeshadow Duo in Avant/Garde (gorgeous shimmery warm ivory and brown)
Smashbox lipgloss in Cameo (You like pink lipglosses, you have to get this, its perfect!)
And lastly, Maybelline Define-a-lash Waterproof mascara in black

All combined its a really pretty, not too made up look for the office.

    Hi Karen Too,

How funny! I designed my wedding invites and ended up using both a scripty font along with Copperplate Light!

Satin Taupe is a great MAC basic. I have a girlfriend who wears that color exclusively (she likes to keep her makeup streamlined) and she always looks elegant.

I’ve tried Astanga classes before and I like them. Awhile back I tried doing Bikram and I so couldn’t hang with the heat!

    Hi Karen,

I did a body wrap the day before my friends wedding and the bridesmaids dress fit perfectly (I lost a total of 12 inches all around!) Due to all the pre-wedding parties I was a bit bloated.

Most of my family is in Western PA/Ohio, but I figure that there are flights that go there everyday. Worst care scenario I can be home within 6 hrs by car. We’ll see though, I’m (obviously) going to go where I can find a job.

Anyway, the tinted moisturizer definitely has a light coverage. It looks super natural on. It evens out my skin tone, which is basically what I was looking for. I was surprised by how watery it was, but other than that it’s nice. I sometimes use it under my Bare Escentuals stuff just for a little more coverage.

    Hi Karen

Yep, it got to the right department thank god, but I had at least twenty minutes of repeating the same curse word over and over again in my head when I woke up this morning LOL

I should have known you’d have Cameo, you are the queen of the pink lipgloss! I’d also recommend the shade Pout if you can get it, its a very pretty pastel pink – looks gorgeous on!

Hope you’re having a good day – its late here and I’m just about to hit the sack…I’m tiiiiired!

I am checking some of there snacks for sure. I am a font geek too & I am loving the post-its.

Today was a “slept past my alarm” day so my make up was minimal – Too Faced Shadow Insurance, Benefit’s Gossip on the lid and a bit in the crease, MAC Shroom as a high light, MK Black Liner, DiorShow and MAC Blossoming blush.

That’s so funny that we chose similar wedding invite fonts, LOL! I’m rockin’ Satin Taupe today (even though it’s not the most rockin’ color….), and btw, I looooooove my new 217 brush! I needed this precision tool in my makeup bag. Have a nice friday! My work day is almost over now (some time zones ahead!), and I’m soooo ready for the weekend!!

    Hi Brittany,

In the grand scheme of things 6 hours by car isn’t too far. My fam is about an hour and a half by car. I swear it takes that amount of time to go anywhere in the bay area!

I hope I can find a color that matches my skin. I am going through a foundation kick and have been wanting to try everything under the sun!

    Happy Friday. 🙂

Nice! I love the long handled MAC brushes. I’ve had mine for years and they are really sturdy and they don’t shed. plus, the brush heads are very soft.

Got any exciting plans for the weekend?
