First reaction: “Eh…it’s a’ight. It’s not really doing it for me.” Eventual reaction, sometimes months/years later: “WOWWWWWWW!” This has happened to me a few times, where the first time I used something I thought, “bluh,” but then time passes, things change, I change, maybe my skin changes, and then I’ll re-try a product and be like, “This is actually pretty good! What was I thinking?!”
It happened just recently with Hourglass Retouch Fluid, their lightweight concealer, which I have in Sand. When it came out, I thought, “Eh… It’s OK.” Sort of a peachy color corrector, it didn’t appear to really do much for me. I didn’t think it was opaque enough to cover anything, but I’ve done some makeup soul-searching since then (you know what I mean), and now I don’t feel like my dark circles are as big a deal as I used to. I think I made them out to be more than they really were, and it turns out that I really like the light coverage I get from Hourglass Retouch Fluid. It’s just enough for me.
Similar thing happened with YSL Touche Eclat. First time I tried it, I thought, “Hmm… I don’t get the hype.” Then I gave it another go a few years later (it also came out in more colors, which probably made a big difference), and I liked it. Dare I say it — I loved it enough to hoard.
I’m not using it right now because I’m trying to keep my whole under-eye situation very simple, and the more I apply in that area, the older I look (figured that one out the hard way!), but I know I could figure out a way to incorporate it into my routine and be happy with the results.
Also, light hold hairspray. For ages, I didn’t get it. I thought, “What’s the point?” If you’re gonna put something in your hair to hold it in place, why use flexible hold?
(Disclaimer: I also grew up in the ’80s, when it was cool to have hair that wouldn’t move in a wind tunnel.)
But now I totally get it, and I love 💖 flexible hair spray now. I love how it tames the beast without being overly structured. Oribe makes an AMAZING one.
Anywho! I guess the theme here is change. My tastes are constantly evolving.
Are there any products out there that you, when you first tried them, felt only “meh” about but later grew to love? I’d love to hear about it because, you know… I’m asking partially because I want to add to my beauty list, ha ha ha! Not that it’s running low…but I’m always looking.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
I cannot think of any except maybe MAC Studio Fix Fluid. I didn’t ever hate it but I liked it much more once I started applying it with a kabuki style face brush vs a beauty blender. A brush blends it better and gives a more natural finish imo
And I’m waiting for the day when they make a hairspray I can stand the scent. I’m all for a hair product that holds my hair in place but the number one reason I don’t use it is bc I loathe it’s smell and I’ve tried my fair share of both HE and LE varities. Nope they all smell awful… cannot stand😝
I bought the Charlotte Tilbury flawless filter a few months ago. At first I was very much disappointed and couldn’t understand the hype. But I did keep using it and one day I caught myself in the mirror and went oooh my skin actually looks awesome! Ha! Recently I’ve gotten some lovely comments from my work colleagues so my makeup game must be getting better!
I feel the same way at the moment — how have you been using it?
Thank you!
I’ve been applying it together with my foundation with a beauty blender. This is my usual and the look I love best.
I have tried using out more recently as a highlighter too.
Also tried using it alone but powder set it – for less coverage days. Growing to like that too!
Ooh will have to try both – thank you so much!
Blush! At first I didn’t get it, and six months of the year I hardly use it (my motorcycle helmet gets really gross on the inside if I wear too much face/base makeup). Now I really miss it, when I don’t use it. It makes me look more healthy.
Charlotte Tilbury Exagger Eyes shadow palette. First time I used it I looked like an albino rabbit, but now that I figured out that you need to be more heavy handed with this palette I really love it
Does perfume count? The first time I tried to wear Frederic Malle’s Portrait of A Lady, I didn’t like it. It took me a year of trying it over and over to figure out that it’s basically a winter scent for me. Once the weather turns warmer it doesn’t play nicely on my skin.
I didn’t used to wear cream or dewy products & lately it’s all I have been wearing, I just seem to enjoy looking like I have already been sweating all day. Also I didn’t use bronzer for the longest time, as I had such a hard time finding one that worked on my fair skin, but now I wear it most days (I still love blush more than bronzer though).
