A Look Back: 90s Supermodels

June 1st, 2008 by Karen 29 Comments

I read a piece in The Independent this morning about how some of the famous OG supermodels of the 1990s are getting work again.

“Three of the original ‘Big Four’ that Gianni Versace sent down the catwalk in 1991 will be back on the billboards. Linda Evangelista, who celebrated her 43rd birthday this month, is starring in Prada’s autumn/ winter adverts, and Christy Turlington is the face of Escada.”

I remember when you couldn’t escape Cindy Crawford’s face. It seemed like it was everywhere you turned. For years I watched her on MTV’s House of Style. I even went through a Crawford mole phase; I drew it in and wore it around for a few days (until my mom told me I looked completely ridiculous).
90s-supermodels

How was your evening? Did you do something fun? I finally got to watch 27 Dresses and loved it. I thought the dialogue was great, albeit a tad bit predictable. Overall, it was very touching and funny and made me want to marry El Hub all over again (really, I just want to wear another fancy white dress, ha!).

Time for a quick run around the neighborhood! What do ya got goin’ on for today?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

LOL!! I just had a class where a girl did a report on 90’s supermodels! (My art school also has fashion students, urg.) And she showed us pics of the horrible 90’s trend of “heroin chic”. OMG, the models then were so gross! Kate Moss started it too.

And she’s another model that’s consistently getting work now too, in 2008! (Especially since she was caught snorting cocaine, lost all her contracts, went to rehab and then got all her contracts back plus MORE. Oye…) Good job there, “cocaine Kate”.

I voted for Heidi, ’cause she’s proven herself to be not only smokin’ hot but a nice person too! YAY Project Runway!

Claudia Schiffer! It was close with Heidi though. But somehow I like Claudia better. And her cameo in fluffy Love Actually was too cute.

I think they were all pretty great, just because although they were slim they didn’t look malnourished! I picked Elle McPherson, but Heidi Klum is definitely a close second for me. They’re both absolutely gorgeous and seem like real sweethearts.

Last night I went out to eat for a friends birthday – it wasn’t the best fun ever, but we laughed a lot anyway. Today is almost over and i’ve been organizing my life a little bit. My beauty products have been put into baskets (7 in total – Foundation/Powder/Concealer, Blush/Highlighter, Lipstick, Lip Balm, Lipgloss, Eyeshadow, Eye Pencils/Mascara) and I got rid of a whole bunch of negative people from my Facebook “friends”. I guess its some “late-spring” cleaning but it feels pretty good.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

So I voted for the one who was actually my favorite in the 90’s which was Nikki Taylor… no real reason except I just thought she was the coolest LOL.

Just running around and doing some errands myself 🙂

That’s really awesome they are coming back! They are amazingly beautiful. I find them more interesting to look at than a lot of models now. I can’t say for sure why that is though…

I finally watched 27 Dresses Friday! My cousin is in it, well the right side of him. 🙂 But it was a lot better than I thought it would be! I want to buy it now, see some deleted scenes.

Still haven’t made it to see Sex and the City. 🙁 I was going to go today but I woke up with my eyes closed.haha Freaking allergies! There is going to be an exclusive scene from the Twilight movie tonight on the MTV movie awards, so that’s what I’m looking forward to tonight! Have a good one. 🙂

    Hi Mariah,

I didn’t know you were a Project Runway fan! I totally want to hang with Tim!

I was not a fan of the heroin chic look, either.

    Hi Karen B.,

Oh yah! I always liked her black and white Guess ads. I had a few cut out and on my wall when I was a teenager, LOL.

    Hi Beth,

Yay for organization. I should probably do a little bit of that, too. Did you get pretty baskets for your makeup? I bet that looks cute. I have resorted to storing stuff in clear, plastic shoe boxes. Not the most aesthetically pleasing set up but it gets the job done.

I just got back from my run. Time for some core exercises (blah!) and then lunch.

    Hi Megan,

I used to read Seventeen magazine when I was a teenager in the early 90s and I totally remember seeing Niki all over the place!

Did you house hunt today? 🙂

    Hi Bridget,

Oh, which scene is your cousin in? I will look for him!

I really hope the Twilight movie stays true to the story. If it doesn’t I’m sure fans will revolt!

Allergies totally suck, I know. Take care of yourself…

Well I voted for Niki Taylor but then I remembered that I was a Daisy Fuentes fan. Is she considered a 90s model? Maybe I am just remembering her from her MTV days.

I voted for Claudia Schiffer because I love her look. I didn’t pay much attention to supermodels in the 90s because I was either too young or too busy studying (I don’t know). Too bad I didn’t discover them earlier, but I remember Cindy Crawford was very popular here during that time. My little 9-year-old cousin actually looks a bit like Claudia, but with black hair and eyes (Claudia is still prettier, of course). The campaign ads of Claudia for Chanel 2008 are nice.

I’ve watched 27 Dresses too. Nice clothes and fun movie.

OMG I’m totally obsessed with Kate Moss, I collect magazine rip-outs of her editorials and advertisements, I think she’s stunningly beautiful.

    Hi Anna,

I did those exercise videos in way back in the day, too. I still have them lying around here somewhere. 🙂

Cindy’s mole is awesome! I still totally want one, LOL.

Yeah, I think she was MTV circa mid-late 90s. Have you seen her lately? She still looks great!

    Hi Vivien,

Kate’s been working for a long time! And she continues to get work, too, which is unusual for a model who’s been in the industry for so long.

I will never, ever, ever, ever understand the Kate Moss appeal. Never ever. All of those other models are beautiful…but her…just don’t get it. Sorry! to those who like her.

    Hi Shefali,

I have to say that Kate’s career has had longevity, which in the modeling industry seems to be a rare thing.

But hey, gimme curves and a big booty any ole’ day! 🙂

I didn’t house hunt yesterday, but Saturday I did…and I think I may be close to makeing a decision. I am actually going out on a long lunch break this afternoon to look at 3 places again. I have to decide on condo versus townhouse…ugh…

    Seriously buying a home is stressful! It’s so hard to have 100% confidence…and it’s a huge decision…

I <3 Cindy back in my t(w)eenage years, she was so awesome! Tyra is also hot but she was not so much of a supermodel, more of a runway/VS model I think. I like her talk show though, some more years and she’s going to woop Oprah!

Kate Moss and James King were the two who started the heroine chic trend. Now James King is pretty quiet but she’s still very beautiful.
