1. Doughnuts and tea
Is it “doughnut” or “donut?” Because I dough-not know. HAHAHA! Sorry…I had to go there. ?
My brother brought us some sweet treats from this place called Vegan Donut Gelato in Oakland the other day, and my life is forever changed. The Oreo cookie doughnut is, in a word, epic, especially with a cup of Earl Grey with a splash of half-and-half in it.
YUM!
2.ALL THE LOTIONS
Well, I guess having dry skin from head to toe is good for something? This week I’m trying a new retinol body lotion from Josie Maran and two things from First Aid Beauty — Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration and their Ultra Repair Firming Collagen Cream.
3. Close the window, calm the light
Sing it with me: “And it will be alright…”
I used to listen to the Rita Coolidge version of this song (We’re All Alone) on the radio when I was a kid… I hadn’t heard it in years, so when it randomly popped up on YouTube last week I clicked to listen and started reading the subtitles for the lyrics.
HOLY EFFING CRAP, I’ve been singing it wrong this whole time! I always thought it was “Close the window, come alive,” but nope. It’s “close the window, calm the light.” WHOOPS.
Another mind-blowing realization: the lyrics are kinda depressing. I never thought that deeply about them when I was kid, but yeah. I only heard the music and Rita’s soothing voice.
4. Doing liner with an angled brush and a powder eyeshadow
It’s been my jam lately. Easy to clean and super quick to do, and I like making the line super thin. Sometimes I’ll tightline with an additional liner, but sometimes I won’t.
5. Emma
The 2020 version of the movie directed by Autumn de Wilde, specifically. I watched it again last weekend, and I’m gonna watch it again the next chance I get. I love the pacing, the costumes, the acting, and you’re probably going to laugh, but I also really, REALLY love the sets and (weirdly) the paint colors they used for the different indoor rooms.
There are so many vibrant pastel greens and blues. Seriously, you should watch it just to admire the paint on the walls. Not kidding!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Lol you are a doNUT. That looks very very good. I’m loving The Beauty Brains podcast, the behind the scenes, logical advice and information is helping me be a better skincare shopper! Hair too actually…. and I’m loving fountain pens. I found one in a former employee’s drawer and it is FUN to use!
Karen says
Oh fountain pens are fun! I used to have one in college and I loved it. (I wonder what happened to it, yikes.) I was funny about the ink; I only liked using blue. What color is yours?

I’m loving the Honest Beauty Get It Together eyeshadow palette I bought because a certain favorite beauty blogger of mine recommended it. ? There’s a bit of fallout, but they’re so soft and blendable! And I like that I will use all the colors in the palette, which isn’t always the case.
I used it yesterday when I did- gasp!- a full face of makeup! Yes, the whole nine yards, right down to a spot of bronzer and highlighter. (Hello, Becca x Chrissy Tiegen palette, my old friend.) We had a family Zoom thing, so I went all out. It felt really good.
Karen says
It’s so great, right? I’m so glad you love it, Suzanne!
Good call to wear it with the BECCA X Chrissy Palette. I’ll try that soon!

oh my goodness, I had mind-blowing TDIL lyric moments when I finally watched “Rocketman.” Just like the Rita Coolidge classics, those Elton John classics have been mis-sung by me for so long! “She’s got electric boobs, her mom has two!” I also thought Rita Coolidge was singing “come alive.” And the Depeche Mode song, “Walking in My Shoes,” “keep the same appointments I kept” I always sung, “keep the same lights on the tarmac.” smh…
OK, next time you visit, you’ll have to check out Holey Grail donuts in Ward Village. A co-worker has been raving about their donuts and fancy coffee drinks. I don’t do donuts (believe me, I want to, but it’s for the best) but I like how they fry theirs in coconut oil. Donuts and tea sounds like a lovely thing, especially since I stopped drinking coffee (*RECORD SCREECH*) But I’ve really been enjoying rooibos tea with cocoa powder/monkfruit sweetener/almond extract. It still has a bit of caffeine, just much less catechols, which is what’s killing my gut.
I like all your lotions! I have 2 moisturizers, one for not-wet skin (I’ll use a lotion-lotion) and for wet skin like out of the shower, I use almond oil with a bit of one of Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab scents.
Karen says
Thank you so much for the recommendation. I’m very much looking forward to the day when we go back to Hawaii. I miss it so much!
And HAHAHAHA, I will never be able to listen to Benny and the Jets without singing your line about the boobs, LOLOLOL!
Avis says
Looking forward to treating myself to “Emma” at the weekend. I know the village where they filmed the outdoor scenes very well, so I will be interested to see how it looks on the screen.
Karen says
That’s so cool, Avis!
Jennifer says
I think I’ve seen every film version of Emma and I wasn’t crazy about this one.
I liked the sets but the movie just felt too modern to me.
Karen says
I see what you mean. I didn’t mind that so much, though! You know what felt too modern to me? The latest adaptation of Little Women. The version with Winona Ryder will always be my favorite!
Jan says
I thought those were the Rita Coplidge lyrics, too. Wonder what else I’ve been wrong about . . . (probably a lot).
Karen says
Ok, so I’m not the only one, *whew*!
Anne says
I am loving the current sunny weather and knowing that I have the upcoming weekend off (although it is supposed to be cold and rainy by then).
Trude says
I loved Emma too! I thought the same thing, each shot was like a painting. So gorgeous. And Bill Nighy is the best. Oddly enough we had donuts this week too, a rare treat and soooo good. I’ve been loving some paint supplies I picked up from Lakeshore Learning for my toddler, they’re paint cups that have covers so splatter is kept to a minimum and you can take out the brush, close the lid and the paint will stay fresh for next time! Genius!
Karen says
How funny! I only have doughnuts a few times and year, too. We must be on the same wavelength!
