HOMEGIRL. There are so many new hair care lines at Tar-ghey! I’m talking about stuff beyond the usual suspects, a la Pantene, Garnier, L’Oréal. I was there yesterday perusing shampoos, and I almost short circuited in the “clean hair” aisle.
There are so many new up-and-coming brands!
I swear, I stood there for 20 minutes trying to decide whether to stick to the Odele Shampoo, Conditioner and Leave-In I’ve been using and loving for months, or whether I should try something new… That’s the eternal conundrum for beauty lovers, isn’t it? Do you stay with what works for you, or do you succumb to temptation to try something new??
This time, I ended up staying with my Odele staples, but I’m grabbing the Function of Beauty Wavy Hair Shampoo and Conditioner next time I’m there.
First of all, look how cute the packaging is! I’m such a sucker for pretty pastels.
Now, look closely at the bottles… See the different lines and how some are curlier than others? The lines correspond with the hair type each bottle is made for. Super cute and totally GENIUS.
Feel free to geek out. ?
Apparently, the way this brand works is that you identify the shampoo and conditioner ($9.99 each) for your hair type first — straight, wavy, curly or coily — and then decide on an add-on called a “booster” ($2.99) to mix into your shampoo and conditioner. Each booster has a specific job, like to add volume or heat protection, and you can add as many or as few boosters as you want to create a custom hair brew.
I don’t think I’ve seen anything like this before. Seems very innovative!
After checking that out, I headed over to the clothes section because I needed a new camisole to wear with a white button-up shirt I recently got.
Actually, let me back up a little first…
I haven’t owned a practical white, long-sleeve button-up shirt (or button-down shirt, however you like to say it) in a very, VERY long time. Long story short, I’ve been putting off buying new clothes for years, and my body completely changed when I had Connor. I held onto the belief that I’d eventually get back into my pre-pregnancy wardrobe, but ya know…it’s just not gonna happen. It only took me five years to accept this, but hey, better late than never!
I’m having to rebuild my wardrobe from scratch, but I had no idea where to start, so I googled a checklist of wardrobe basics, and I found this one by a wardrobe stylist/Youtuber named Erin Busbee. She specifically caters to fashion for women over 40, and I’ve learned a lot from her videos.
One of the things on her list of basics is a white button-up shirt, so I bought this one because of the great reviews, and I’ve been looking for a camisole to wear underneath it, because I’m not about to show my DNKY bra to all the parents at preschool pickup, LOL!
At Target, they have a camisole, that’s also a bodysuit, by a brand called Auden. It’s $16.99 and comes in beige, white and black.
Seriously, where has this been all my life? I normally don’t like to wear camis because I can’t stand when the fabric bunches up around my waist, so I love the idea of having a body-hugging tank that I don’t have to keep readjusting and pushing down.
One last thing — Target carries my favorite floss now, Cocofloss.
I ran into it in the section I lovingly call “THE DEATH TRAP,” which is the display in the makeup department with all the tiny sampler bottles of lotions and potions and whatnot.
I realize this floss is hella expensive, but let me tell you — your teeth will be the cleanest they’ve ever been in your entire life! JUST DO IT, and thank me later. ?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Don’t beat yourself up about new post baby clothes. You do realize that pregnancy actually expands your rib cage don’t you?
There are too many choices for me at Target. I can’t even believe I’m saying that.
I’ve been rotating through Lush Rehab shampoo, a Lush shampoo bar, Verb shamp and conditioner and head and shoulders.

There are SO many choices! I was legitimately thrilled and overwhelmed at the same time.

I was in target a couple of weeks ago and saw several of the hair product lines you showed, but I had not seen all of the ones you saw. It is kind of overwhelming, and I will have to do some research before I go back. All the packaging is so pretty. I love Busbee Style! I have been watching her videos for several weeks now. I also love Shea Whitney – her closet is amazing. It is incredible all the youtubers I have found while working from home this year. Since you like home decor, have you seen any videos from Arvin Olano or DIY with KB? They are really fun and I love their styles.

I haven’t heard of either of those channels, Daphne! Thank you for the heads up. 🙂

Hi Karen! I love the Function of Beauty products! I ordered mine off their website, where you can not only customize your formula based on your hair type and needs, but also choose the color of your shampoo and conditioner and also choose a customized label that says “function of” (any name you choose). Of course I got “function of kristie” printed on my bottles ?. Also, thank you for cluing me into Target carrying Cocofloss! I had no idea! It’s my fav floss and I used to get it from Sephora but they are constantly sold out.
Karen says
That’s so cute, Kristie! I just might end up doing a custom bottle. Which formula do you use?
Kristie Haskett says
Wavy, medium texture, normal hair, anti-frizz, deep conditioning, brassiness reduction (I have bleached blonde hair), shine and strengthen. Because I had brassiness reduction as one of my choices, my shampoo was automatically purple, but i chose pink for my conditioner. Oh and also you get to choose your scent, so I chose peach (nude) which was the highest rated, and you also get to choose the strength of the scent, andi chose “strong”. Lastly, you choose the size you want. I chose the 8 oz bottles since it was the first time I tried these products, I’m very happy with both the shampoo and conditioner though! Plus it was so much fun to customize everything!

Yes, I almost had a short-circuit moment in the hair care aisle at Target the other day. Too many choices! And then factor in that I buy for six different heads of female hair, each with a different texture and curl pattern. Yikes!
Karen says
Wow, that’s a lot of shampoo and conditioner! How many bottles do you gals have in your shower?!
Suzanne C says
? Fortunately for our shower, the girls live with their moms. But they have quite a bit of shelf space for storing their hair-care products for when they’re at our house. (Which is all the time, especially since two of them live literally a block away.)

Here is a great resource for clothing. It’s like your blog, down to earth and fun to read. She has great practical advice.

I watched the Erin Busbee video and thoroughly enjoyed her positive advice (despite the campy mellow drama) and I plan on watching some of her other videos. I’m in my late seventies and so I’ve gone through the whole wardrobe conundrum several times. And, although I’ve never felt depressed or frustrated nor have I ever broken down in tears, I do understand how daunting revamping a wardrobe can be. After having children, after going through menopause, after retiring from the workplace—every major change in my physique and life style has made it necessary to cull my wardrobe and revamp it to suit the “new” me. It’s great that women who are having trouble with the wardrobe transformation have a cheerleader like Erin to help them through it all.
Karen says
This is really the first time I’ve had to start from scratch and Erin’s tips have been so helpful. I’m glad you like her videos!

Thanks for the tip about Cocofloss being at Target! I used to get mine at Sephora but they have not had it in stock as of late. I am also interested in trying the Function of Beauty items. It seems like such a cool concept.

I love Erins videos, she has taught me so much about how to dress after the kids!

I’ve been slowing down on purchasing new clothes (maybe the odd seasonal refresher) as the plan is for me to be pregnant around this time next year. So there’s no point investing in lots of new clothes or shoes that I’ll only be able to wear for a short period of time (and maybe never again.) That’s the main reason I haven’t been revamping my wardrobe lately. Hand bags and jewelry are fine to invest in now because they’ll always fit no matter how big I get ☺️
