Post-Dental Beauty Bribery Featuring Yves Saint Laurent and Bobbi Brown Fall 2013 Swatches

September 25th, 2013 by Karen 25 Comments

K in the mirror
Who’s that cat lady at the mall?!

Okay, so I know I always hem and haw whenever I have to go to the dentist (I can’t help it. I’m a crybaby.), but I had some seriously traumatic dental experiences as a child.

I’m way better now, though. Now I only slightly freak out before my appointments. 🙂

Today my plan of attack was pretty simple: just don’t cry. So I took a ton of deep breaths, tried not to clench my fists in the chair, said comforting things to myself like, “You’re doing great. Everything’s going to be fine. This isn’t bad at all.” And, of course, I exercised beauty bribery.

I gotta admit, that stuff really works. I told myself that if I didn’t cry at the dentist’s office today, I could pop by the mall on my way home, and wouldn’t ya know it? I didn’t shed a tear, which goes to show ya — that’s the healing power of shopping centers right there.

Of course, the mall doesn’t get all the credit. It also helped that the gal who did my cleaning, Kim, happened to be a beauty junkie and fellow MAC fan (Hey, Kim!), so we had a lot to talk about.

When Kim finished and I left the office with my new toothbrush, some floss, a freshly cleaned night mouth guard (SEXY) and one of those pointy rubber thing-a-ma-bobbers to clean my gums, I made a b-line for Nordstrom’s Yves Saint Laurent and Bobbi Brown counters.

Sigh… I could’ve stayed there all night long, but then I thought, Who would do my tubby tabby’s bidding?

Must hurry up and get swatches.

Yves Saint Laurent Fall 2013 I left the store empty handed, but I don’t know… I think I need to revisit those YSL quads again soon. The ad campaign is doing a number on my willpower…

In my dreams, my brows look exactly like this, BTW.

The bright green and blue eye is a little cray, but I’d still go there, and I’d wear that dress in a heartbeat if my muffin top wasn’t so, uh, muffin-y…

So, what do you think of these shades? Anything here jumping out at you?

In other news, it’s barely 9:30, and I’m getting ready to hit the haaaay (too much reading late at night).

Instead of reading something exciting tonight like Parallel, I should bust out one of my old college chemistry books… Those always used to put me to sleep fast.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Yeah, if you want more punch you may have to wet the shadows to bump up the pigment.

Yes, definitely! They’re super soft and smooth, and I bet they’d look amazing on you.

I’m currently stuck in a blush rut. Must find new colors!

How are things going today? Happy Thursday, woo hoo!

Aaahh, now I want it even more! I think the rose color would look good on me.

Thursday is going fine, just working all day…a little sore from my zumba class last night, it was super intense!

Holy cow, YSL! Is it me or is their fall collection like a disco ball? That Artsy palette is full on glitterama. 🙂 I can’t wait to see your FOTD if you recreate the promo pic. I might have to call this the Fed Ex eye. 😉 Oh, and great job at the dentist – I’m glad it went well!

This is glitter you might actually love, btw. YSL does it right. 😉

Can you imagine? I think there are people who could wear that every day and not get a second look because they have that makeup confidence, you know? I would not be one of those people. HAHA!

I can’t stop thinking about Tom Ford’s pink palette, darn him. But if YSL does glitter like they do mascara, I could be on board with this. This is when you remind me that I never wear eyeshadow so I should stop wanting/buying it. I know you’ll say I should start *wearing* it instead. 🙂

The City Drive Artsy Palette is the big winner in my book! The rest of the items are too generic to have my attention. And while Artsy isn’t terribly unique, I’m in love with the combination of the four. What a perfect way to try a bright color.

I completely understand the dentist fear… I suffer from it, too :(. One time I was so scared, my body went into self-preservation state, I broke into a sweat all over my body (I’ve never experienced anything like that before or afterwards) and I almost passed out. Nowadays I’m doing a bit better, but I’m afraid I’ll never completely stop freaking out on the inside. I never thought about bribing myself with makeup shopping, so I appreciate the suggestion lol.

Oh YSL! I just must go & play with it a little! I’m not a fan of powders and creams together in a palette so if I were to get that Bobby & Katie it would look super messy in no time but I love Rich Chocolate! Perfect for every day. 🙂

I have both the Bobbi and Katie and the Bobbi chocolates palette. Love, love, love them both! I need to get some swatch pictures up because they look so different on my pale skin compared to your swatches, much darker and richer for the browns. I bought the Bobbi and Katie palette and have been wearing it a lot. The pinks are just amazing on pale skin, and just the right touch of shimmer without being too much. The right side of the palette is much darker on me, but is great for a dramatic look.
And I wasn’t going to let myself buy the chocolate palette because I own many of those colors already in other palette, but it has all of my favorites in ONE palette. And I tested the color payout on the supposedly poor payout colors and did not find that to be the case at all for me, but keep in mind that I’m very fair so colors turn instantly really dark on me.

As a kid my mom always bought me a new Bonne Bell after I had to have a shot at the dr, and my first makeover at a counter was after going to the ER in the middle of the night, requiring an IV and um internal exam. So yeah I still bribe myself that way, if I have to be poked with a needle.

I’m currently searching for one perfect new fallish eyeshadow, or maybe a duo/quad. Hmmm.

I can relate to the dental stuff. I am a total baby about going to the dentist because I’ve had problems with sensitive bleeding gums. I now get nitrous just for cleaning, and afterward my shoulders are all stiff from being the tense the whole hour. I’d prefer to get knocked out totally if I could!
