Ulta Adventures: Smashbox Photo Angle Pure Pigment Gel Liner

Smashbox Photo Angle Pure Pigment Gel Liner ($24 each)

Totes getting a Benefit vibe from these new Smashbox Photo Angle Pure Pigment Gel Liners ($24). They’re a new line of gel liners in twisty pens. The gel comes out of the flexible angled tip, just like Benefit’s They’re Real Push-Up Liner.

I was stoked to play with these when I spotted them at Ulta, but I got a little freaked out by the display… All of the liners had crusty bits of gel at the tips, which I cleaned off before taking these pics because they looked like a hot mess, and I couldn’t take it.

I dunno about the 36-hour wear time…. I don’t actually need my liner to last that long, LOL! Have you tried these yet? If so what do you think?

I’ve used Benefit’s gel liner before, and it looks a lot like these. With those there’s definitely a learning curve. They aren’t the easiest product to work with because it’s hard to get the gel to go where you want it to. Stuff has a mind of its own, but once you get it down, you can do some neat things with it.

It doesn’t matter if you practice with this. I have the benefit they’re real liner and I can do the perfect cat eye at night, just before I cleanse it off and go to bed. The next morning I get late to work because I had to cleanse the liner off and start over with my makeup. Worst product ever. Would definitely prefer a pot of liner.

I think the longest I’ve worn an eyeliner (MAC Blacktrack) was over 24 hours (it was a Hanson concert, one in Manila and one in Cebu), but these days, the longest now for me is 4 hours. I don’t need 36! rofl.

I played with those at Sephora. They do seem cool. People absolutely DESTROY the samples so while they might look gross, our own makeup collections are clean and nice. The UD Electric palette display samples are usually horrifying.

I really like colors and they look pretty cool too. I need to play with them a bit next time I hit Ulta

Yieks, if the product looks gross in the display already, I wouldn’t want to see how it looks after using it for a few days at home.

Hmmm these look kind of interesting. I find a lot of testers at Ulta look pretty gross, but they’re fine in my own collection. I’d be interested in a long wear time, I don’t need 36 hours, but I do like my liner to last!

I ordered one of these from Sephora when they first came out. Promptly sent it back. It was difficult to control how much came out of the tip, the texture seemed a bit too waxy to get the color to “stick” (but “smooshed” easily when you applied more pressure), and I wasn’t able to get anything but a smeary mess from it. Sigh. It seemed like a good idea!

I brought the purple one a few weeks ago from Sephora. And every time I used it there were clumps are at the tip! I was afraid some of the clumps would get into my eyes! You are supposed to click once to get enough product but I guess it dries at the tip so you have to keep clicking to get the gel to come out after the clumps and then it’s too much product.. And it didn’t apply evenly so I had to go over it several times. But it lasted a long time and is a pretty color. Not sure but I may end up returning it.

Hi Karen (and Tabs)! Have you tried this eyeliner on the waterline? I can never get one to stay put there. thanks 🙂

I’ve heard that the Benefit liner gets returned a lot because people can’t learn how to use them :/ I like the black of that particular liner, but my lines always ends up weird, so I have to smudge it with a brush.
BTW, can you tell NLM8 (a commenter in this post) that these are NOT SUPPOSED to go in the waterline? They can irritate the eye.

I retuned it. Mine wouldn’t twist up when I wanted it to-so I’d come back, and I’d have a glob of liner. Also, it broke and I could see how much product was actually there…not much.

I had a real hard time using the Benefit one with the slanted tip, couldn’t get the hang of it, so will probably have the same problem with this one

I love these! I also love the Benefit one too! I cannot do a wing with any other eye product. The first time I used the Benefit liner I had perfect wings. Same with the Smashbox ones. If you are use to liquid or marker there is a different hand hold to get use to and you drag it heel to toe or stamp it. I also learned that if you use some of Smashbox’s eye primer (and I mean a tiny tiny bit) put it on the back of your hand and kind of wipe the rubber tip of the sides of the liner it will help it go on smoother.

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
