Everyone tells me I look like Ali Wong, but I never understood it until this morning.
I was chillin’ on my phone, scrolling through my Insta feed, when I saw that picture above with the girl in the orange dress (full disclosure: I didn’t have my glasses on) and was like, “I don’t remember taking this pic…and where’d I get this orange dress? And why is my boob almost falling out?? And who is this lady in the pink??”
I clicked on the pic and realized that (holy sh*t) it totally isn’t me! It’s Ali Wong… HA HA HA! Cracked me up.
This morning I also realized that I’m no longer meant for flat makeup bags with a simple zipper at the top. They just don’t work for me anymore. I don’t like having to dig around in them and taking FOR-EV-ER to find anything. I much prefer a specific type of makeup bag now, ones that are shaped like cubes or squares and have a zipper at the top that goes around.
I have two such bags in my life right now, and they see the most use. The first is a clear one from Wander Beauty (I don’t think it’s sold on the website anymore, unfortunately), and the other one is an LE MAC bag I got a while ago.
I “need” (“air quotes”) to get another one or two, though, because I’m done with all other types of makeup bags.
I saw this $15 one on Melissa Street’s feed (she’s a professional makeup artist in LA) from MYKITCO., a UK brand… I think I need one!
Something else that’s been rocking my world lately? Answer: the wonder that is plain nonfat Greek yogurt. I’ve been all about this stuff lately because it’s just so convenient and versatile. I can have it as regular ol’ yogurt in the morning for breakfast (add fruit, nuts and a drizzle of yogurt), or as a substitute for mayo or sour cream. (Try it on top of tacos sometime. It’s SO good!)
I used it to make an egg salad yesterday for lunch using equal parts low-fat mayo and Greek yogurt.
SO GOOD. I stuck it in a halved bell pepper, then sprinkled spinach and bacon on top.
Mmm…
Oh, and while I was making lunch, I listened to Lizzo’s new performance on NPR’s Tiny Desk.
JUST BEYOND. She’s so good on the fly, and she cracks me up, too! I especially love the flute solos (THERE WERE MULTIPLE MOMENTS) in Juice. Sigh! I wish I could find my flute (I think it’s MIA at my parents’ house) because I really want to learn how to play the chorus in Juice on it.
Never mind that I haven’t played flute in, oh…25 years. I think it would still be fun to learn.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Have you tried one of the opens-to-flat makeup bags with the drawstrings? I just got one and I love it!
Lily says
Me too! I got one of those a couple of years ago and I have never used anything else since. So easy to find things.

Hi Jenn,
I’ve seen those but I don’t think they’ll work for me because I like to store the cubes neatly in a drawer! Cool idea though.

I agree with you on the top opening square makeup bags and I will add one caveat – I like mine to be clear as well.

I have a nice square bag with adjustable dividers and a few spaces in the top for brushes. Not enough spaces, mind you- of course I still need my brush roll. Although now I’m ‘needing’ that MyKitCo Brush Buddy! ?
If I’m not mistaken, I think the girl in the pink dress with Ali Wong is the actress who’s going to play Monica Lewinsky in the next season of American Crime Story. Beanie Feldstein is her name. (They’re calling it “Impeachment- American Crime Story”.)

I love Lizzo!! She is so amazing.
Makeup bags are such a pain. I dumb everything out.

There’s a YouTuber I follow who is a make up artist (Tina Yong) and she has a side business that sells make up bags, jewellery bags etc. I’ve been eyeing the makeup bags but I dont really have a need for one lol. The company is called Mark & Scribe.

Benefit has a lot of those square makeup bags that zip around for easier access to the contents. I think they’re mostly GWP’s but I found some new ones on ebay. I have the “Wonder Woman” one, and another that says “It’s not hoarding if it’s makeup”. They’re really cute!

Love the Lizzo video!

The part when she says “I made a baby cry” cracked me up!

It definitely seems like the square makeup bags would be easier for finding things. I have all my stuff “organized” by category in gallon ziplocs, arranged file-style in cubes in one of those open, 3-shelf cabinets. My everyday is just in a regular cosmetic bag in a bathroom drawer for easy access.
I’m not super crazy about yogurt but like the Chobani Less Sugar Greek Yogurt cups. They’re flavored but that’s more convenient for me anyway. 🙂
I thought the same thing when I saw the pic above. I was like “was that the Emmy’s? I don’t remember Karen wearing that dress…. or glasses…..”.

If you want a really great square makeup bag that holds a cr*p ton of makeup, please check out the Lug Trolley bag on QVC (I am in NO way affiliated with either.) it has a lot of nice little zippered compartments to store your MU so it doesn’t get mixed together. Cost is approx. $40, but SO worth it and they come in multiple patterns. There is a Lug website, but QVC sells them cheaper.
Karen says
Cool, thanks Janine! Just looked it up and it looks so roomy.

Wow, those bags from MyKitCo look great! Her brushes look really good too, and the prices seem very reasonable (except they are in British pounds, and I have no idea how that translates). Happy International Cat Day, by the way! (God Bless Tabs, I miss him). I don’t know if you have Cost Plus World Market where you are, but if you do, today only, they are giving away free cat mugs to celebrate.
Karen says
Hi Daphne,
Happy International Cat Day to you, too! Thanks for the heads up about Cost Plus. There’s one about 25 minutes away from me… I have so many cat mugs but maybe someone here in the comments will take advantage of the awesome offer.
