Your fun fact for the day about eggplant: While commonly thought of as a vegetable in cooking circles, eggplant (also known as aubergine), is technically a fruit — specifically, a berry.
And now you’re ready to conquer the botany stage on your next trivia night! (Lucky you.)
I’ve got aubergine on my mind because one thing that Santa so kindly brought me for Christmas is the aubergine-colored Athleta workout top I’m wearing in these pics, so I did this combo the other day with aubergine eyes and berry lips.
When you want to do easy eye makeup, pencil liner is your BFF.
For the eye makeup, I used one of my favorite quickie techniques. I grabbed a long-wearing pencil eyeliner (ESUM Aubergine), applied a layer on my lids, and then buffed out the edges to mimic the effect of eyeshadow. I did this a few times to build up the color in the areas where I wanted more depth — the lash line and outer third — so that my hooded eyes would look more deeply set. Then, I lined my upper and lower waterlines and smudged the liner along my lower lash line to balance out the heaviness on the lids.
Finish with a couple coats of mascara on your lashes, and you’re done!
What you’ll need to look for in your liner
Ideally, you’ll want a liner that’s soft enough to blend with a brush, but you don’t want one that’s too smudgy, because then it’ll just move around on your bare lids and disappear. On the opposite end of the spectrum, you don’t want one that dries too quickly, because then you won’t have enough playtime to blend.
On top of all that, it also has to stick to your waterlines (and feel comfortable on there, too).
For this technique, I really the MAC Eye Kohls in Powersurge and Teddy (Costa Riche is a good one, too, but I’ve noticed that it tends to move a lot unless I set it with a powder). The Laura Mercier Kohls are excellent, too. Try the Stormy Grey shade!

Gorgeous and I always dig multiple-uses; i.e., MAC Stone lipliner also makes a terrific eyebrow pencil for those with very dark head hair.
And goooo Athleta! 😉 I’m in a no-buy year so I will have to wait until my yoga shorts suddenly develop holes (which, after several years still has not happened so I may make it this year without buying a pair) to even peek at the Athleta website.
My cooking teacher taught me that eggplant was a berry, too. Then I blew my own mind when I cut a blueberry in half and realized it is very similar to an eggplant: yellow-green-ish inside, deep indigo-purple skin, tiny seeds)!
Your hair is looking gorgeous, btw.

You just blew my mind! I’ll have to try Stone tomorrow. I’ve been mixing Omega and Brun lately (just for fun!). Can’t wait to try.

Thanks for the tip. I have Costa Riche, so I’ll give it a try.

You’re welcome! I love me some Costa Riche. If it does tend to move on you, though, set it with an eyeshadow. 🙂

Love that makeup look! And I love those earrings! I wish Santa would’ve brought me some Athleta!

I got the idea from the ladies in my HIIT class. They swear by Athleta and told me that’s what they ask their family members for Christmas gifts, so that’s what I did too. 🙂

My eyes are super deep set and a dark emerald-blue green. I know I’m supposed to wear light colors to make me not look like a skeleton but I really love dark colors on my eyes. Do you have any tips where I can still use dark colors but they won’t make my eyes look even more sunk into my head?
Karen says
Yes! You just have to figure out how high up you go on the lid. Play with the amount of color you take up toward your brow; start low one day with a color that you like, then take a pic. Try it again on the next day (same color), but take it up a little higher. Take another pic. Do this over several days, and eventually you’ll be able scroll through your pics and you’ll see which placement suits you best. The camera will not lie to you! (It’s unforgiving that way.) But you’ll figure out exactly how high up you need to go. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks so much for replying! I’m going to practice this weekend ❤️

I have MAC eye kohls in Teddy and Prunella, so I’ll have to try this look. Love that Athleta top. Went looking for it and when I realized it was cropped I passed. I like things to cover my ample stomach and booty.
Karen says
So I normally am not into crop tops either, but this one has a lower than usual hem so I feel covered up! If you wear it with high-rise bottoms it’s not scandalous at all.
Karen says
Oh and this would ROCK with Prunella!

Love this look! Such good colors for this time of year.

LOVE this on you, and it would work on me too! Thanks for the inspiration!
