Ask MBB: Makeup Tools of the Trade for Natural-Looking Contouring and Definition

March 18th, 2014 by Karen 23 Comments

I usually like to wear a little MAC Give Me Sun Mineralize Skinfinish or Guerlain Terra Nerolia Bronzer — just to add some warmth to my skin after applying foundation — and to get a very soft, natural contour.

Here’s what I typically do to contour in this video at the 10:21 mark…

I like that way just fine, but lately I’ve been wanting to try something different — a more defined, contoured look that’s a bit more sculpted, but not scary.

In this episode of Ask MBB, MAC Senior Artist Victor Cembellin weighs in with a few products and tools to get a sculpted, contoured effect that still looks natural.

Products mentioned…

  • MAC 168 Large Angled Contour Brush
  • MAC Pro Sculpting Powders
  • MAC Pro Shaping Powders
  • MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Lightscapade

Eek, I am all over that angled brush! It’s at the top of my mile-long MAC wish list.

As always, thank you for watching. Sending you big hugs today. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Happy day after St. Paddy’s Day! Did you have any green beer?

I did not, but we did end up going to that Moylan’s place I mentioned for fish and chips but weren’t out late.

It’s a little chilly outside here this morning but warm enough for shorts and a hoodie. My Gerbera daisies send their regards, LOL! If there’s still snow on the ground where you are, I’m sending you rays of virtual sunshine through the monitor…

Are you getting those? They should be coming through any minute now, but there may be a slight delay…

Because it’s sunny now, I have to be extra mindful of the surgery scar on my arm. I’m on doctor’s orders to keep it out of the sunlight while it heals, so I’ve been covering it with a Band-Aid and, of course, you know the boring old brown ones just won’t do.

Hello Kitty Band-Aids
Hello, kitty!

I’ve been all about these hot pink Hello Kitty ones I found at Target.

Hello Kitty was one of my favorite cartoon characters when I was a kid. I went through a phase where I wanted Hello Kitty errrrrthing.

Hello Kitty Band-Aids
Hello Kitty Band-Aids ($2.49)

I guess I’m still in the midst of that phase, haha!

You have a great day today, ‘k?

    Love contouring! 🙂

Remember I had asked you about fan brushes? lol. What do you think about the brand coastal scents? I am still on the fence about the Tarte one lol.

Ulta stopped selling it online, and Tarte doesn’t sell it anymore on their website..don’t know if its being discontinued haha

I haven’t tried their brushes! I have a couple on my “I’m curious” list though. Did you end up getting the Sonia Kashuk fan brush?

I did end up buying the Sonia Kashuk one! It kinda feels like the Tarte one, but it smells a bit… probably because its a mix of natural and synthetic hairs. I just wish the brush handle was not made out of plastic :/

I am sucker for packaging haha, partly why the Tarte one looks appealing haha

I love the sculpt and shape powder. I was never able to do any decent contouring before and now I can’t live without it.

The 168 brush is also great I agree.

I’d love to give the sculpting and shaping powders a try. I never really contour actually, but I’d like to give it a try and see how it looks. Who knows, it might actually make a bigger difference than I think it does. And looool, those bandaids are cute. I never was into Hello Kitty though, not even as a kid.

I wear the Shaping Powders in Lightsweep and love it! You should try it sometime. It’s kind of awesome.

I’m so glad I’m not the only adult that uses Hello Kitty bandaids! My friends used to rag on me so hard back in my dorm days lol. They’re just too cute! I love to contour though. I have a small chubby face that could use some extra definition. Right now I use Sleek Contour Kit or MAC Blunt blush but I really want to try one of those shaping or sculpting powders. It seems like everyone loves them!

I like taking a rosier contour shade (like NARS Zen) or a super soft shade like The Body Shop Honey Bronze Bronzing Powder to contour. Or I place a blush like Tarte Exposed or NARS Seduction a bit lower and to the outside of my face for an all-in-one color.

I’m a big fan of contouring now. I can’t believe how sculpted and awake it makes my face look, and it takes less than 5 minutes! For the brown smokey eye, I have been loving Nars Galapagos (put on with a fluffy brush for easy blending) occasionally paired with MAC Club, MAC Woodwinked, and MAC Mulch. I love your videos!

      Hi Katherine,

Re: contouring. Me too! I have to do a little bit every day; it makes the tiniest difference but it’s still noticeable. What brushes/products do you typically use to contour?

Those bandaids are so cute! My little baby girl is all over Hello Kitty so we got her Hello Kitty bandaids too. Though the problem with that is that we can hardly keep it on her – she likes to peel them off, ha!

Hi! I have the same HK band-aids. Funny story: They’re the only band-aids we have in the house & my husband wore one to work on his chin one day. Hahaha! He has yet to live that down. 🙂

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a.
