If you require makeup inspiration, might I suggest looking at your doorway?
Wait — hear me out. That’s where I’ve been finding “inspo” for looks all week long. First, Samantha the ghost bride was my muse. Now it’s the fall leaf garland that hangs on my doorway.
I wore this subtle smokey eye with a warm orangey reddish brown lip to preschool pickup yesterday (I took the lipstick off before I put on my mask though) because I was feelin’ fall. The leaves are starting to fall in my neighborhood, and although it’s been climbing into the 70s for a few days, there’s a chill in the air first thing in the morning.
Been thinking a lot about ’90s makeup and so I went with a subtle version of a ’90s-style unblended lip liner in this by pairing a dark burgundy liner with matte orangey reddish brown lipstick. I wanted the liner to be present but not overly obvious… You can kinda see it from some angles more than others, but it’s there!
By the way, this lipstick, MAC Marrakesh, is one of those orangey reddish brown that deserves more love! It’s a matte lippie in the permanent collection, and it’s loaded with vibrant, lush pigment. If you like MAC Chili (which is similar, but redder) or MAC Paramount (also similar, but browner and redder), then I think you’ll like Marrakesh too.
You can wear it with any and all of your warm brown eyeshadows, like MAC Saddle or Soft Brown; it also pairs well with peachy browns like Amber Lights and bronzy browns like Antiqued. For matching eyeliners, try MAC Teddy or Costa Riche (which is what I’m wearing here)!
Makeup Worn in this look
- EYES: MAC Costa Riche liner (buffed all over lids and applied to lash and water lines); MAC Eyeshadows in Brown Down (outer v and upper lash line as eyeliner), Havana (outer lid) and Sweet Heat (inner lid), Urban Decay Brow Beater Pencil in Neutral Brown, Laura Mercier Caviar Mascara
- CHEEKS: MAC Gingerly Blush, MAC Give Me Sun Mineralize Skinfinish Natural
- LIPS: MAC Burgundy Lip Liner, MAC Marrakesh Lipstick
- BASE: Lancome Skin Feels Good Hydrating Skin Tint in Tan
School pics!
Coywolf started preschool just in time to take school pics this year.
If you look closely, you might be able to see her painted nails!
In other news, do you have any plans this weekend? Happy early Halloween to you. We’re taking Connor to a pumpkin patch tomorrow (she’s dressing up as Rapunzel), and then on Sunday I’m going to bake all the pies for Pie Quest 2020. Thank you for your baking tips for the crust, by the way (you can find them in the comments here, if you’re interested). If all goes well with the pumpkin pie, then the next pie I’m going to tackle is pecan pie, and then apple pie, because LOOK!
Did you know that such a gadget existed?! I had no idea.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. TGIF!
Rachel says
You didn’t know about apple peelers?! Karen, where have you been! Connor Claire’s preschool pictures turned out soooo cute! I hope she has a fun Halloween tomorrow! Oh and your makeup looks gorgeous like always!
Karen says
SERIOUSLY WHERE HAVE I BEEN?! I’ve always wanted to bake an apple pie from scratch but the thought of peeling and cutting all of those apples is so intimidating. I need this gadget in my life ASAP, right?
Rachel says
Most definitely!
Karen says
Yes! And clearly I need all the fluted pie plates. LOL! There are a lot of cute ones at Williams Sonoma. I think I should wait to figure out if I actually like making pies though, so far it’s been such a struggle.
Megan says
Hi Karen!
This look is perfection. The colors and textures work so well together and and it’s simple but glamorous (perfect for preschool pick up!).
Connor looks so poised and confident in her school pictures. And those long pigtails-adorable!
Happy Halloween! It’s supposed to be cool and sunny here (a nice respite after the remnants of Zeta came thru Atlanta). So hopefully a nice long walk through the neighborhood to check out decorations and plenty of scary movies are on tap for me.
Good luck with your pies. I admire anyone who tackles homemade crust. Catching up on The Great British Bake Off is about as close as I come.
Karen says
Thanks, Megan! I hope your Halloween is relaxing, safe and fun.
Also, a while back you mentioned some of your recent TJ’s finds (the organic pumpkin bread and walnut pesto). I have to swing by there today to get parsley (gonna make shrimp scampi tonight), so I’m going to grab them if I can find them The pumpkin bread sounds delightful!
Happy Friday!
Megan says
It’s so good! I also recommend the pepita salsa (it’s new to me). It’s a jarred salsa (not refrigerated). It’s slightly smoky and I’ve had it on veggie burgers, in burrito bowls, and on eggs with some avocado. Shrimp scampi sounds like perfect Friday night fare.
Karen says
Ooh, I’ll look out for it! If it’s not too spicy I’ll try it (got some eggs and an avocado that is going to be ripe in a day or so).
BTW if you’re interested here’s the shrimp scampi recipe I use. Super easy!
Syahidah says
I actually “awwed” out loud at Connor’s photos. Happy Halloween Karen and fam! xx
Karen says
Thank you Syahidah! Have a great weekend!
Kim says
Oh, totally. Almost everyone around here has an apple peeler/corer, but we’re in apple country (home of the largest Macintosh orchard in the world, I’m told). Well, just a few miles down the road, anyway. 🙂 I don’t because it’s quite large and I only make apple pie or crisp a couple of times per year. But if I was a baker, I’d have one for sure!
Connor’s pics are adorable!! We had two of our fave local photographers do a series of senior pics of the boys and they each captured one perfectly. I honestly got choked up looking at them. <3 And I'm such a dodo. When I first scrolled to your garland pic, I thought "wow, they have a GIANT door… oh, wait, that's when Connor was much smaller". HAHA!
Karen says
Seriously what rock have I been hiding under? I guess I’m the last person to know about this magical device!
BTW thank you for sharing your pics of the boys with me! 🙂

Marrakesh, YES! One of my all time MAC faves!!
And Ms. Connor Claire is looking totally fab and divine in her pictures. Tres chic!
Ericca says
i love that whole look. I believe I have that lip pencil and lipstick.
you daughter is very cute.
Tatiana says
Not that we have the same skin type, but what have been using on your skin? Your complexion is perfection! I have MAC Chili and think that’s as orangey red as I dare go.
Love Connor’s photos!
My girlfriend has one of those apple peelers. I just use a paring knife or a regular hand held swivel peeler. Then again, she has four kids and usually makes her pies in multiples.
Hope you and the family have a fun weekend.
Chelsea says
That LIP! ? I love it. I don’t look good in browns but orangey reds are great on me, so I think this would work.
I wore a slightly metallic orangey red lipstick in a pageant I was in for my high school – the Mary Kay lady picked out our colors and that lip was so good on me, and on stage.
Sherry says
Awww…Connor Claire looks so grown up!! And I love her necklace and painted nails!! Love the “Bushel and a Peck” sign too…adorable!! These pictures of her brightened my day.
Michelle says
I love this MAC lippie! Will def try with the burgundy liner. That sweet little babe is the cutest things ??
Happy Halloween ?? xxoo
Savannah says
I love how sweet heat looks on you! The color doesn’t look quite that interesting on me, but I still like it. I don’t like Havana for some reason, but for Halloween I’m going to do a look with Amorous Alloy and mulch to smoke things out. I like applying the extra dimension shadows with a clean fingertip more than brush application.

Everything Autumn makes me feel home and happy! It’s the rusty colours, the crisp air… I like using those colours in my makeup so yours is absolutely fab for me!
Connor is so cute in her preschool pictures and I truly hope her year is going to be happy and memorable.
xoxo and stay safe
