I Put on Makeup Today!

March 31st, 2016 by Karen 67 Comments

tarte double duty beauty classic courage palette with connor

Ya know what occurred to me the other day at 2 in the morning while I was in tears and feeding Connor?

Babies have no need for concealer, even if they’re up all night.

Amazing!

If I look a little tired…that’s because I am. Connor Claire’s been really colicky and, thus, we’ve been spending some long nights together. Plus, hello hormones running amuck (hence the flood of tears at 2 in the morning)!

I needed a little pick-me-up, so I managed to put on makeup today.

tarte double duty beauty classic courage palette k1

I’ve worn this Tarte Classic Courage Palette ($28; limited edition from the new Double Duty Beauty collection) a few times over the last couple of weeks, and what I like most about it is 1) how easily the eyeshadows blend together, 2) how long the eye and cheek products last on my combination skin (a full nine hours!) and 3) how I can do this entire look from start to finish in 20 minutes.

I bet I could even get it down to 15 minutes with some practice. I’m learning that in new Mommy Land, 20 uninteruped minutes to do anything is a blissful eternity!

tarte classic courage

tarte double duty beauty classic courage palette

Classic Courage is one of two limited edition palettes from the Double Duty Beauty collection, and it’s the one with warm colors. The other palette, Sultry Star Power, has cooler tones. I’m hoping to give that one a try soon (you know I love me some cool shades).

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

You look fabulous. Baby girl, C is fierce! Is it wrong that I never stopped wearing makeup? I would give the baby to my husband and just take whatever time needed to slap on makeup on my face – this is still my favorite “me time” moment!

OMG! She’s your mini-me! I think she looks just like you! Oh happy day for putting on makeup. I’ve worn my “no makeup” makeup look all week & today I put on the full monte. At least for me anyway. I added a flower headband to complement my flower jumper pants from F21. The entire look is incredibly springy. And I look like a flower girl. My fave aesthetic is a boho-chic vibe, a la Free People. I’m also rocking Becca Opal, MAC Rebel, & NARS Taj Mahal. Needless to say, I feel like a bad a$$ and the fashion pick me up has given me a much needed jolt of girl power!

I know how you feel girl – I have two sets of twins, and the only way I could describe my sleep habit when they were infants was “nonexistent!”

I’m really loving the new Tarte collections… for the most part. I’ve really loved everything in the Rainforest of the Sea Collection, especially the Wipeout Color Correcting palette and Drink of H2O moisturizer. The Double Duty collection has been more hit and miss in my opinion. I ended up returning the hybrid gel foundation because no matter how I used it – with a brush, beauty blender, fingers… it just ended up looking cakey throughout the day no matter what, even though I set it with powder. I loved the concept – so I wanted to love it, but it just didn’t happen. The lipstick/gloss I thought was too creamy for its own good. I prefer a firmer lipstick. Other than that, I loved the Double Duty line, especially the Confidence powder which I am now using with the Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation and I absolutely love the combination! I do hope they perfect the gel-hybrid formula – I’d love to give it another shot if they work on it some more!

You look so beautiful Karen! Those “right after delivery” hormones really kick your butt. I cried about everything (broccoli, Jake talking to me, Jake not talking to me, Jake being afraid to upset me, the baby, our seven year old, the sun … it’s intense). Putting on makeup–even if only a little TINY bit–always helped me feel like ME.

I hope Connor Claire decides she’s ready to sleep a bit better, a good long nap always helps those hormones a little bit.

    Much love,
    Jessica

You’re so sweet. Thank you for this nice message. The colic has been such a challenge, I just hope it eases up within the next couple of weeks (I’ve read it peaks between week 4 and week 6). I’ll try to enjoy each day because I know the time goes by fast.

Oh, and the other day it hit me that I need to make sure this little person has dinner every day until she’s 18! OMG!

They have so many different things now to help with the colic that they didn’t have when Lil Damon was a baby! Check out Moms organic stores etc! His was so bad I had to get my Nanny which is his great Grandmom to come stay with me over it! I would put him into his car seat n put him on the dryer n turn it on and hold the car seat and that helped?? Crazy!! Love You and I’m so thankful that Everyday I get to see your pretty face and read your blog!! I love You & Tabs so much!! ? And now I get to love Lil Miss Connor!! ❤️❤️❤️

When my baby was nursing every HOUR at night, my pediatrician advised that daddy can give baby 1 oz formula. We never had nipple confusion issue. That 1 oz of formula bought me 2 hours of sleep.

      Hi Lilly,

Connor was doing that the other night; feeding nearly every 1-2 hours! She goes through phases where she’ll eat frequently and then other phases where she’ll sleep for longer blocks of time. I’m hoping that tonight will be one of those nights when she wants to sleep longer *keeps fingers crossed*.

Karen– feel your pain with the colic!! Been there, done that, tried everything– even an elimination diet where you basically subsist on air and water (no soy, dairy, etc) in order to ease your little one’s pain. Calling my husband in the middle of the work day, sobbing that I can’t get him to stop crying– we’ve all been there. It may be hard to see now, but just remember you are doing all the right things. The days are short, the nights are long, but this too shall pass and you won’t even remember pacing the floors when you look back.

She could not spend any awake time without crying unless she was nursing. I promise you though, it WILL get better and it is OKAY to not enjoy her every minute of the day. Don’t beat yourself up because babies are really hard to take care of! Hang in there, you’re doing a great job mama! Xoxo

My daughter was very, very colicky as well, but hang in there. It really gets better after week 8 and almost completely is gone after three months. And these days she is an awesome sleeper and such a content little lady, as if these first weeks never happened. My son now is colicky as well, but not nearly half as much.
Putting on makeup is my treat whenever I manage it throughout the day, it is an instant mood booster.

Karen, you look beautiful!! I’m sorry about the colic. I was a colicky baby. My Dad used to drive around with me at night. Sometimes he’d go up a mountain so he could listen to Yankee games on the radio. I became a fan at a young age!
My son had colic, too. Every evening he’d scream for what seemed like hours. My husband was away on business for a week of it – lucky him. Nothing really worked, except time.
Yay for makeup. It’s good to do something for yourself. Even taking a shower every day was a challenge. I’d bring my son in the bathroom and put the carrier on the floor.
Connor is a little treasure and I know that she is SO worth it.
Love and hugs to you all.

A mama’s got to recharge her batteries a little. It’s amazing how something as simple as taking a shower or putting on a little makeup can make one feel human again. I’m so sorry Connor has colic. Not fun for either of you. I was a colicky baby, and my dad used to have to drive me around at all hours so I could sleep. I still fall asleep on car rides till this day. lol

    Karen ,
Props for being able to do makeup and post too!! I was a breastfeeding counselor for 6 years and thought of one tip that I didn’t see mentioned by other posters. Try to burp Connor before AND after nursing. If she doesn’t burp before, no worries, but it can’t hurt. Also, I found that the best pacifier of all is your little finger, with your (clean, of course) nail down. Gives new meaning to giving the finger! Don’t forget, many of your readers have been there, survived, and are mentally pulling for you and El Hub. Hang in there, baby (cue kittens).

I love this picture of the two of you! You both look great! Colic sucks, I had it with my first (second is due in a month, I really hope he doesn’t have it), but just try to remind yourself that it’s only temporary and ends someday – although it’s hard to believe it at 3 in the AM! Post-delivery hormones are a total b****h – I cried about everything, my c-section recovery was long, so all I could do was feed the baby, my husband did the rest, and I felt so useless – the hormones did not help! We all got through it eventually. Oh, she is so beautiful, what a cutie 🙂

Oh girl i know that pain. My girls are now 6 and 3 so I’m done with the newborn crying phase but it wasn’t so long ago that I don’t remember all of that hell. I know it’s so cliche but it really is true that it gets better {even colic}. Ya just gotta hunker down and take care of yourself in those very rare moments that you get. Pretty soon she’ll be passed this stage and will be in the cherubic baby phase where she sleeps through the night, eats on a more normal schedule, and you even get to take showers now and again. Just hang in there, it’s all so worth it!

Gorgeous! You — the baby is pretty cute too. 😉 Colic is an awful, evil mistress. I will say that becoming slightly immune to a child crying is a gift now that my sweet baby girl is 9 & is beginning to feel those delightful hormone surges… Just keep on momming. Like everything else in parenthood, it ends. And then you miss it. 🙂
