Seriously, I did this makeup in 15 minutes, ’cause I just can’t handle much more than that right now. I just can’t.
I was feeling kinda ’90s today, hence the matte cheeks and lips. And all the brown.
ALL THE BROWN!
But I needed to have a little bit of color up in the mix, so I also threw some green liner on my lash lines.
I used some of the matte browns from the LORAC Mega Pro Palette 3 and did the matte cheeks and lips with Tarte.
I was going for a tonal thing. Brown on the eyes, cheeks and lips, and also matte everything. That way the green liner, which has a little shimmer, would stand out.
At least that’s what I was going for…
I mean, whatever. It’s 15-minute makeup. Not all of it’s gonna be perfect, but I figure, unless someone is staring at me intensely from across a room, no one is really going to notice that perhaps this line is thicker than that line, or maybe my shadows aren’t blended perfectly. I’m cool with it. 🙂
- EYES: Maple, Toffee and Olive from the LORAC Mega Pro Palette 3, MAC Pro Longwear Waterproof Colourstick in Bitter Clove, Urban Decay Loaded Eye Pencil and Rimmel Volume Colourist Mascara

This look is stunning and it’s hard to believe you did the whole look in 15 mins. I just got a green eyeliner from ItCosmetics, I might have to try this look. I don’t think I can pull off a brown lipstick though.
Karen says
Hi Agata,
Super dark matte brown can be kinda hard if you’re not used to seeing yourself in it. You could maybe do a pinkish brown? Maybe something like Rave or Choker from Tarte:

Maybe try “Carnal” from the Urban Decay Vice collection – it’s a little bit lighter and more nude than some of the more grunge brown lipsticks like this one and UD “1993.”

I love the monochromatic look! You have sold me on Brownie. I need to own it.
Karen says
It’s awesome!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen you wearing this color palette. And you look fabulous! The teal really works with the browns.
Karen says
Hi Allison,
It’s something that I used to do on the ’90s a lot. Been a while since I’ve worn these colors but I’m enjoying them! I’ll also trying to embrace other looks that I haven’t tried before. 🙂
I hope you’re having a nice Friday so far. What did you do with your makeup today?
Allison C says
Years ago, I always wore the same makeup all the time. I used what makeup I had till I used it up. Boy, was I boring! Now I do like to try new things. But brown lips would be tough for me tho I just received a bunch of brown lippies so I’ll give ’em a try. I look like a corpse in brown lips and cheeks so I have to add in some peach. We’re going to friends’ for dinner tonight, but the women who’ll be there don’t wear makeup so I’ll be doing something sort of boring and natural 😉 Have a good weekend!
Karen says
So, I kind of feel the same way about brown lips! I don’t know if it’s because I haven’t worn them in SO LONG, or if it’s because I’m so in love with color now (unlike in the ’90s), but I feel kind of blah when I do all brown everything. That’s what I had to add some green into this look.
Good luck with the brown lippies… Maybe pair them with a bright liner along with your peach cheeks?
And have fun at dinner tonight. Funny that you should mention doing makeup to sorta fit in with the crowd. I find myself wearing less when I hang out with my friends Jen and Cindy (they’re both not really makeup people). I bet if you and I hung out though we’d be wearing everything though, LOL!

I’ve tried to hold out on the whole brown/monochromatic trend but it’s really been the look i’ve been feeling these days. Sort of off topic but will you be reviewing the victoria beckham estee lauder collab karen?
Karen says
Hi Jenna,
I feel the same way. I put off getting into it because I wore it so much in the ’90s, but now I’m feeling it. I think if you can add a little bit of a twist — like the green liner I’m wearing here — it’s a lot easier to pull off. Otherwise, it can be a LOT of brown, ya know?
As for Victoria Beckham, I’ve been swooning over the collection; I’m trying to get a hold of some pieces so hopefully I’ll have the chance to review it. Gonna keep my fingers crossed. Doesn’t the eye palette look amazing? It’s sold out online!
jenna says
Such a great point, I’ve been really into a monochromatic brown look with a mix of warmer/more neutral browns and a pop of plum somewhere on the face, with the cooler weather we’ve had recently i’ve been reaching for my plummy blushes.
yes! The green and blue in the palette are so gorgeous, the collection releases tomorrow here and i’m trying to justify modern mercury. I’ve only *just* started getting into highlighters (clearly late to the trend haha) so I don’t know how much I’d really use it but I doubt I’ll be able to resist if I get to swatch it in person! Hope you can get your hands on some of the products 🙂

I want to second the request for a review of the Victoria Beckham collection! Huge fangirl here! Loved the Nails Inc collab she did too!

Absolutely beautiful look!

Thanks, Bex. When you try it please send me a pic! Or are you on Instagram? If you are tag me @karenmbb. I wanna see, I wanna see!
How are you doing today? I’m SO glad it’s Friday. It’s lunchtime here in Cali so I’m about to grab some food (leftover Chinese from last night).
Ruchita says
This is an amazing 15 minute look! I love the brown lips. That’s exactly what I did “back in the day”. Coffee Bean from Revlon was my go to color, although it wasn’t totally a matte color. Happy Friday! 🙂

Great look on you Karen! I want to give a shout-out to another “90’s” vibe product out now that I am loving – the Urban Decay Vintage Capsule lipstick collection. I couldn’t resist picking up the entire line, which is not something I do regularly with new lipstick lines coming out! These are so bold and original, and I had nothing quite like any of them in my collection already – something I am always on the lookout for! I recommend checking them out for anyone who’s into a more daring look or a more 90’s look (or both, like I am!)

Allllllllllll brown lipstick allllllllllllll the time!!! I LOVE this look! I have a pile of cement/greige/corpse colors that I gaze at longingly all spring and summer, just waiting for the moment I can start wearing them again. I don’t know if I’ll ever get bored of them!!! I know it’s a look that’s not for everyone, but oh my word, do I love it! But I do find it to be hard to pull off in monochromatic looks in the real world. I have olive in my skin, and it does look “dirty” if I only wear brown on brown. The peach cheeks and some pop of color in the eyes really makes it wearable!
Kiss & Make-up says
Hey, there’s Loaded again, such a nice shade. Lovely look, Karen, you wear that lip color so well.
Fran says
Karen, it takes my 30-45 minutes to do as much makeup as you did here! It’s good to let go of some makeup perfectionism, isn’t it? And still have some fun with makeup!
It’s funny, I did a tone-on-tone with violet/burgundy shades yesterday, with the new Kat Von D MetalMatte palette shades in Twinkle and Volt, Bite Beauty Multistick in Lotus on my cheeks, and NARS matte velvet lip pencil in Train Bleu topped with Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist lipstick in C502 Taupe Violet on my lips. This was because I was wearing a new lightweight merino wool v-neck sweater purplish-burgundy from uniqlo. That store carries some really nice basics at great prices! Hard for me to wear all mattes. Love the sparkly green eyeliner — it really brings everything else to life.
Erin says
The green certainly makes the look!
Kim says
You know this is right up my alley. 90s makeup for life! Kidding. Sort of. 🙂
Btw, your 15 minute makeup is 1000x more perfect than my “took all day” makeup would be.
yelena says
there is no way you did this look in 15 mins? u look FABULOUS! seriously, you rock the 90’s brown colors so well! I am loving it! and your eyes just pop with that eyeliner! I may have to try it out myself 😉
Karen says
Yeah, girlfriend! 15 minutes! It’s one of those looks that seems like it would be complicated but it really isn’t.
If you try it post it on Insta and tag me so I can see it. 😀
