Fresh Friday: New Line of Organic Baby and Body Products Coming Soon to Target

January 4th, 2019 by Karen 12 Comments

Soooon!

MBB’s “Fresh Friday” series takes a look at new beauty brands (and venerable O.G. brands that are new to me). Let’s discover new makeup!

Toddlers really do say the darnedest things.

I asked Connor Claire what she thought about the new Hand Soap from Made Of, and instead of commenting on the foaminess of the bubbles or how soft her hands felt afterwards, she pointed at the bottle and said, “Mama, there’s a turtle! And she’s purple and smiling and wearing a necklace!”

Aw, babylove!

“Made Of” is a new line of organic baby, body and home care products coming this month to Target and Buy Buy Baby. They make shampoo and body wash, baby powder, diaper cream, nipple balm (oh, I remember those days), baby sunscreen, baby lotion, diapers, diaper rash cream, baby wipes (they also have a diaper subscription service), multi-surface cleanser, dish soap and hand soap, and everything’s reasonably priced between $4 and $13.

You’ll find them alongside Honest and Babyorganics and other brands with that familiar “natural” marketing — no dyes, fragrances, colors, GMOs, suflates, parabens, that kind of thing. And they seem more upfront than usual about the business of “clean” marketing. They’re completely transparent about where their ingredients comes from and where their products are manufactured, which is refreshing.

The line also has a bunch of well-known certifications, including Leaping Bunny and the Environmental Working Group, among others, and I dig that the ingredient lists on the labels show which ingredients are organic and which aren’t.

Made Of Ingredients
Literally a list

Connor and I have been testing a few things from the line, and the standouts have been the Foaming Hand Soap (rinses clean) and the Baby Shampoo (big bubbles).

I also like the Moisturizing Body Lotion, the main ingredient of which is aloe. It’s surprisingly hydrating for a thin, fairly runny lotion.

Everything is also unscented… And you know me — I like my body care to smell good, so I do wish that these had a little something-something scent-wise, but I understand the rationale.

Connor, of course, loves the animals represented on the packaging. #priorities

Look for the line on your next Target blackout run. If you don’t live near a Target or a Buy Buy Baby, though, they also sell samples of their products online for $2 a pop, so you can try before committing to an entire bottle (I wish more brands did this!).

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

The Impeccably Dressed and Long-Lasting Sisley-Paris Phyto-Eye Twist Waterproof Cream Eyeshadows

May 27th, 2015 by Karen 15 Comments

Aside from their very fashionable zebra stripes, many brands make shadow sticks that look like these Sisley-Paris Phyto-Eye Twist Waterproof Cream Eyeshadows, but I don’t recall one being dressed as well or one costing as much (they’re $50!).

Dat black and white zebra print, tho.

Sometimes I feel like putting an animal print on something is a gimmicky (albeit usually effective) way to make it seem better…

Sisley-Paris, a high-end skin care and makeup brand, promotes their use of plant-based ingredients (full list of ingredients down below, but note — not all of them look natural), and if the thought of spending $50 for a waterproof creamy eyeshadow stick seems crazier than Ryan Gosling showing up at your front door astride a unicorn while carrying a bouquet of peonies and a homemade Key lime pie, they hope that their ingredients are one reason it’s not.

Despite their extravagant price, I do think that these are gorgeous on the skin, and they’re pigmented, smooth and dramatic with a capital “D.”

Here are two of the eight available shades. The others are 1 Topaz, 3 Khaki, 4 Steel, 6 Marine, 7 Havana and 8 Black Diamond.

The Sisley-Paris Phyto-Lip Twists: These Beautiful Balms May Break the Bank

May 22nd, 2015 by Karen 9 Comments

The Sisley-Paris Phyto-Lip Twists, $50 (!) each

Hmm…

These Sisley-Paris Phyto-Lip Twists are probably the fanciest, most expensive twist-up tinted lip balms I’ve ever seen!

Why is that?

Well…they’re $50 each.

Yeah, that’s a lot of tacos, son.

Sisley-Paris is a high end skin care and makeup brand (a la Chantecaille), and $50 for these is pretty typical of the line, but it still seems a little ridonkulous, doesn’t it?

Lip crayons with the texture of a balm, these are basically medium-coverage lipsticks with gloss-like shine and a highly moisturizing, plumping formula that’s very easy to wear.

Yup, they also contain plant-based plumping ingredients…although I’ve seen, like, no plumping action from them at all. But really, though, lip plumpers usually don’t do a lot of plumping for me. If I ever find a product that actually transforms my lips from stern piano teacher to billowy pillow, believe me, I will freaking let you know.

They’re available in nine unscented, unflavored shades (five of them pictured here) — 01 Nude, 02 Baby, 03 Peach, 04 Pinky, 05 Berry, 06 Cherry, 07 Coral, 08 Candy and 09 Chestnut.

Overlooking the Everest-caliber price, I think these are almost flawless. The crème de la crème of twist-up tinted lip balms. Extremely moisturizing, smooth, easy to apply and available in a nice range of colors.

Wear time isn’t bad, either, for what they are. I get about two hours.

On top of everything else, the sassy zebra packaging does a lot for my soul (I love me some animal prints! — which I didn’t fully realize until this year).

I think these are a wonderful product, but it’s hard to justify $50 for what’s essentially a medium-coverage tinted lip balm. If they were around $17 instead, like the Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balms (or $9 for the Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Sticks), I could see these belonging in all of my friends’ purses.

This may be crazy (it probably is), but for some reason $50 for an indulgent Tom Ford lipstick seems totally sane to me, but $50 for a moderately pigmented tinted lip balm seems like a stretch.

I dunno… Maybe I’ve just inhaled a little too much texturizing spray.

If you’re interested, the Sisley-Paris Phyto-Lip Twists are available now online and at Neiman Marcus stores.

Currently Rocking the Bathroom Shelf: Fresh Black Tea Age-Delay Instant Infusion Treatment Toner, Sisley Black Rose Cream Mask and Osmia Organics Honey Myrrh Lip Repair

June 18th, 2014 by Karen 16 Comments

Fresh, Sisley and Osmia Organics
Some current skin care faves on my bathroom shelf…

Have you ever noticed that when you run out of a product, it’s like you run out of everything at the same time?

Like they’re all in cahoots, Toy Story-style.

“Hey, Benetint! It’s a go for tomorrow! We’re all running out at the same time!”

For me it seems to happen a lot with skin care. A few weeks ago everything I’d been using pretty consistently ran out at the same time, so I took it as a sign to get some new things. 🙂

These are three I took with me on my trip to Redding last weekend.

Redding… That place is dry and hot! It’s like a little slice of Death Valley, and it always does a number on my combo skin.

1. Fresh Black Tea Age-Delay Instant Infusion Treatment Toner

The hefty glass bottle isn’t travel friendly, but I had to bring this toner with me to Redding.

Stuff is great! It’s supposed to even out your skin tone and texture, and it’s hella moisturizing.

Plant extracts are all up near the top of the ingredient list, which is usually a good sign, and there are some interesting ingredients, too, like tea, blackberry leaf and lychee seed extracts, and hyaluronic acid to seal in moisture, along with the ubiquitous Vitamins C and E.

Morning and night, after I wash my face, I put a few drops on a cotton pad, and gently sweep it all over my mug.

I’ve been using it for about three weeks now, and I’m a fan. No breakouts so far (knock on wood!), and my skin just laps up the moisture.

I don’t have a ton of experience with the Fresh brand, but I really like the few things I’ve tried. Unfortunately they are pretty expensive.

A 4-ounce bottle of the Black Tea Toner is $48 and available now at Fresh boutiques and online.

2. Sisley Black Rose Cream Mask

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
