Cream Blush Is Your Secret Weapon Against Raggedy Ann Cheeks

March 30th, 2018 by Karen 10 Comments

kjaer weis suntouched blush
I’m wearing one of my favorite cream blushes of all time, Kjær Weis Cream Blush in Sun Touched.

Yo, I know I’ve been talking about cream blush A LOT this week, but I once unknowingly left the house with blush that looked like two little Raggedy Ann doll circles on my cheeks. I’ve since converted to the Church of Cream Blush because it merges with my foundation and never looks powdery. Amen and hallelujah to makeup that looks like real skin!

In other news, I’m making improv shrimp scampi tonight! It’s Good Friday, which meant seafood for dinner around here, which I’m totally cool with because I was a pascatarian for years, but when I mentioned “no red meat” to El Hub this morning his eyes got wide like we were headed for certain doom.

I googled this skinny version… I don’t know if it’s so skinny anymore because I threw in a bunch of Parmesan and extra butter, but YUM!

Hope you’re having a good night. Got any Netflix recs for me? I want to keep watching season two of Santa Clarita Diet, but I can’t watch it while I’m eating…

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

A “Gilt and Gloss” Makeup Look With Nudestix and Urban Decay

June 9th, 2017 by Karen 15 Comments

Ya know, this whole “makeup in 30 minutes or less thing” I’ve been doing all week long has been VERY liberating. To think, there was a time when I didn’t want to try anything beyond basic makeup because I thought that any looks worth doing would take at least 45 minutes to an hour (or sometimes two).

This look took 20 minutes and — get this! — only one brush. I used an angled eye brush to take out the edges of the cat eye.

Oh, and a BeautyBlender, if we’re being really picky.

To blend the makeup on my eyes, cheeks and lips, I just used my fingers! I’ve been inspired by a makeup artist a friend of mine named Fieran (hey, Fieran!) introduced me to, violetta_fr on YouTube. She’s this impossibly chic French woman who lives in New York, and she does most of her application with her fingers and a handful of products (only what she can fit in her cross-body Chanel purse).

It’s refreshing to see makeup out there beyond the hyper-glam beat that dominates social media, ya know?

Anywho, I call this look “Gilt and Gloss” because I used a mix of sparkly glitter, golden shimmer, and matte taupe and beige eye gloss on my lids.

I wanted to play with finishes and textures, and I wanted to do it in a messy, grungy way that still looks somewhat “lady like.”

For my eyes, I drew thick cat eye liner with a taupe matte shadow stick (Nudestix Magnetic Matte Eye Color in Slate). Then I used my fingers to smudge the edges on my lids.

Next, I took a shimmery neutral gold shadow stick called Gilt (also by Nudestix) and layered that on top of the taupe (quick! — say “top of the taupe” five times fast) on my lids, blending it with my fingers. I wanted to keep the flicks and my lower lash line dark, so I didn’t layer the gold on those parts.

Then I grabbed a pan of Urban Decay Diamond Dog Eyeshadow, a delicious glittery golden brown, and dabbed it on my lids with a finger, and then loaded my lashes with HELLA mascara (MAC In Extra Dimension Waterproof).

Lastly, I applied highlighter in my inner corners using a shiny beige eye gloss called Milk Makeup Eye Vinyl in Bridge.

Unsung Makeup Heroes: Kjær Weis Sun Touched Cream Blush

Kjaer Wis Cream Blush in Sun Touched

The long-running Unsung Heroes series here on Makeup and Beauty Blog features some of our all-time favorite permanent collection products.

If you think about, if you were to be literally touched by the sun — as in, within the corona of a hot ball of glowing gas — that would probably not be very good.

However, being touched by Kjær Weis Sun Touched Cream Blush, on the other hand, is another story.

For a healthy glow

This has been my favorite blush since I discovered it last December. I didn’t get a lot of sun this winter, but this blush helped me pretend like I did.

Best cream blush ever!

This particular coral color works really well with light and medium skin that has golden or olive undertones, and the finish looks completely natural. It isn’t too shiny or matte, so your skin still looks like skin.

100% luxe

I’m really starting to love Kjær Weis. I highlighted the brand a few months ago, and since then I became a full-on Kjær Weis stalker. Let’s just say that I would not be hating life if I had an entire steamer trunk filled with their makeup!

They’re a pricey green beauty brand by makeup artist Kirsten Kjær Weis, with high-performance department store-caliber products. Sun Touched costs — wait for it — $56 for a 0.123-oz. pan, but the compact is refillable, and the refills cost $32, so they’re a little less.

In fact, you could just get one of the refill pans and keep it in your own palette.

The compact looks like jewelry but feels like a ninja weapon. It’s hefty, so it could come in handy in a fight-or-flight situation.

The stuff that cream blush dreams are made of…

This pan werks

It gives everything its got! I only need to use a little because of how pigmented it is, and I can be blushed and ready to rock and roll in less than 30 seconds. I don’t have to build up layer upon layer… A few quick sweeps is all it takes to erase the edges.

Yup, even after all these years, I’m still a MAC NC42 for reference

Brand Spotlight: Kjær Weis

December 8th, 2016 by Karen 19 Comments

kjaer weis brand spotlight
Kjær Weis is an innovative cosmetics line created by Danish-born, New York-based makeup artist Kirsten Kjær Weis

All we need now are some jingle bells and ribbons! ?

I’m a big fan of giving gifts to yourself during the holidays (and giving gifts to other people, too, of course), but, you know…sometimes, if you don’t do it, who will?

In the spirit of holiday self-gifting, have you checked out any products from Kjær Weis before? They’re my new favorite luxury natural beauty line.

20% off for Friends & Family at Credo Beauty

If you want to #treatyoself, enter code CredoLovesFriends now through December 11th to get 20% off orders over $75 from Credo Beauty, where you can find Kjær Weis and many other fab natural/organic beauty brands. Happy shopping!

Kjær Weis. Um…how do you say that? Is it a hard “k,” hard “j”? Well, it’s pronounced “kee-yar wise,” and it’s the last name of the brand’s founder, New York-based makeup artist Kirsten Kjær Weis.

kjaer weis packaging
Shiny packaging!

KirstenKirsten said that when she was creating the products for the brand, she wanted to use natural ingredients, but she wanted everything to perform as well as products from the big beauty brands.

The makeup is made in Italy using certified organic or certified natural ingredients from around the world, and everything is labeled either “certified organic” or “certified natural” by Italy’s organic governing body.

They don’t use any artificial ingredients, so no parabens, petroleums, or artificial colors or fragrances, and everything is cruelty-free.

Also, because a common issue with products that contain natural ingredients sometimes is that the colors vary from one individual item to the next, Kirsten hand-inspects every batch to make sure that the colors and textures are all consistent, which I think is pretty cool.

Here I’m wearing Kjær Weis Cream Foundation in Illusion, Cream Blush in Sun Touched and Lipstick in Love

It’s an elegant “less is more” line with a focus on enhancing your natural features, and the product range has been edited down to the kind of beauty basics a gal might take with her on a weekend trip, like cream foundation, cream blush, cream bronzer and highlighter, lip tints, lipsticks and powder eyeshadow.

They use ingredients like…

  • Plantago Lanceolata Leaf Extract — A medicinal herb that can stimulate collagen production. It’s an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial properties, and it’s supposed to be great for sensitive skin.
  • Glyceryl Caprylate — A naturally derived “preservative” from coconut and palm plants that acts as a moisturizer and emulsifying agent with excellent antibacterial properties.
  • Cera Alba — A refined form of beeswax. According to Kjær Weis, theirs comes from ecologically sound apiaries, and it’s used as an emulsifier and consistency regulator. Beeswax has a structure that provides a breathable barrier against outside elements while nourishing the skin.
  • Rosa Damascena Flower Oil — Derived from the rose plant. A natural perfume.

You can find out more about their ingredients here…

I’m already completely hooked on the line. I’ve only tried three things so far, but I want to try everything else! ERRRRTHANG.

About Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog
Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, which I’ve been doing daily since 2007 (!), you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my four-year-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my torbie girl cat (Pretty Girl Rosie, a.k.a. PGR).
