Where the heck is the fallout? RIGHT? If you’re an Urban Decay fan, you expect a little fallout — OK, a ton of fallout — when you’re working with their eyeshadows. You just learn to live with it…
At least I have. At least most people I know who love and use the brand have in the past. I mean, it’s no big whoop if you do your eyes first and cleanup later, but wouldn’t it be a nice option to just, like, be able to do your eyes and not have to worry about dealing with massive amounts of stray eyeshadow? The $55 Urban Decay Heavy Metals Metallic Eyeshadow Palette, which is part of the brand’s holiday collection and houses a bevvy of shimmery metallics, gives you that option.
I don’t know what happened over at UD, but a few of their recent eyeshadow palettes have exhibited very little fallout, including this one, and it’s been awesome. They’ve totally “leveled up” their eyeshadow game.
The eyeshadows in this palette have a completely new formula, and it’s exclusive to this palette. (I wouldn’t be surprised, though, if they eventually added it to the permanent line.)
There are 20 shadows, with brights on one side, neutrals on the other, and they’re all completely new colors. New formula. New, new, new, new, new!
The shadows have a foiled effect, meaning that when you pat them on with a finger or brush, they’re super shiny — not glossy, as in a wet way, but shiny like chrome or tinfoil.
Most of the time to get that intensely shiny, foiled effect with shadows you have to apply them wet. This palette removes that step. You can do a dry application, and it’s just as shiny as a wet one.
You can also apply them wet, of course, and they look super cool, but really, I don’t see that much of a difference them whether I do a wet or dry application. Either way, there’s lots of pigment and lots of shine, and they blend like a dream.
There’s just a teeny, tiny bit of fallout, but whatever, clean that ish up and move on with your life. That’s all you’ve gotta do.
FYI, some of the chunkier eyeshadows, like Anglefire, for example, have larger chunks of glitter, so you’ll want to swipe those (or, for some reason, I wanna say “whisk” because I have cooking on my brain) rather than pat them on if you really want to see the metallic finish, because if you pat to apply the chunky ones, you’ll end up with more of the bigger pieces of glitter left.
Patting works fine for the other shadows, though, like Afterparty. They end up super shiny. I’ve got Afterparty (which I love!) on my lids in this look. Afterparty is like a rusty red, which sounds scary, but it isn’t at all. It has hints of copper, which I think make it more wearable.
I’m also wearing Demo mixed with Base on the lower lash line, Glory in the inner corner, and Roadie on the outer third of my lid.
Brace yourself before you open this palette for the first time because — tra-la-la! — Urban Decay changed the packaging. The tray with the shadows and mirror slides completely out of the case now, and when you slip it back into the case, you’ll hear a “click” when it locks into place.
Thing is, the locking mechanism isn’t very strong… I’ve had the tray slide out and fall on the floor a couple times (nothing broke, thank goodness), so I might put a rubber band around the outside.
Even with the funky packaging, I adore this palette. I think UD has another winner. It’s easy and fun.
The Urban Decay Heavy Metals Metallic Eyeshadow Palette is $55 and available now (you can also find it at Sephora, and it’ll be coming to Ulta on October 29th).

This palette makes me wish I was 22 again 🙂

Hi Amanda,
Girl, if I was 22 again I’d be packing on ALL. THE. GLITTER. 🙂 I think you can still wear this palette even if you’re not 22. Keep the metallics to the lids or the lash lines and sweep a matte in the crease!

So I reallly like the pinky-brown side of the palette but the other side is what keeps me from snagging this one. Looks very holiday-ready and I love the eye look you did!
Karen says
Hi Indya,
The brights are surprisingly very fun if you use them as accents on the lash lines. 🙂

Man this palette speaks to my HEART! I’ve struggled with UD eyeshadows but this one just looks so good…
And there are so many out there too! Man that’s a tough season.

I was immediately like AFTERPARTY! I’m so glad you chose it for your eye look. 🙂 It did take me a second to see again after being blinded by all the frost of the swatches, but I don’t find it to be crazy-frosty on your lids. Just very pretty!
Christina says
Karen, are they frosty at all? Because I know a lot of “foiled” eyeshadows are just super frosty!
Tatiana says
Pretty colors! Just not my thing anymore.
SISSI says
You know Karen, the colors were actually not speaking to me- too glittery and shimmery. But I gotta say: the eye look you created is HOOOOOOT! 😉

Oh-oh, my wallet might be in danger. I really love those shiny neutrals. I wish I could just buy the neutral half of it. I know UD uses carmine in a lot of their reddish colors, and I’m allergic to carmine – so if these have carmine, I’ll just have saved myself $55!

Love the necklace you have on! What company is that?

It’s so pretty. I’m not sure it’s worth it for someone my age.

I’m 69 and I just bought it!

Of course you know I went out and bought this. Ha, ha! I just got it yesterday, so I’ll be playing with it this weekend.
I really love the look you did here, BTW. You look really beautiful.

Do you remember that anniversary palette from 2010-ish? That was when I really got into UD and I think the quality of the shadows around that time were a lot better than what we´ve seen from the brand in the years after. I had very little or no fallout from the early days of Naked, with a few exceptions, but after that it got quite bad, culminating (for me) in the Naked3 and the Naked Basics2 in which only a couple of shades altogether lived up to the standards I´d come to expect from the brand.
I feel like with the glittery shades they´ve made an improvement from that stage, but the rest is only just now getting back to the quality that made me fall in love with UD in the first place.

This pallette is on sale at sephora right now for 27.oo. I’ve been watching it for a week or two now, seen your review, and pulled the trigger and got it.
