You’ve probably heard of “co-washing” or the “no-poo movement” by now, where women everywhere are opting to skip the shampoo and just use conditioner instead. But while this method has its benefits, eventually it will result in greasy, lifeless locks. However, what if we told you it didn’t have to be this way? The right no-shampoo formula can provide a total transformation in just one step. It’s simple: Conditioning agents nourish and protect hair, and then the formula morphs into a soap-free cleanser, washing dirt away without stripping hair. The result? Smoother, softer, and more manageable locks.
As you probably know, your hair’s texture and porosity can play a big part in finding the products that work for you. With that said, knowing a little more about your locks will help you choose a regimen that’ll enhance your hair’s natural beauty. Lucky for you, there is a great line of products by Matrix Biolage that work wonders for any hair type, whether it’s fine, medium, coarse or curly. We’ll tell you how this trend can make your hair your crowning glory, no matter what kind of hair you have.
FINE
Fine hair tends to be fragile than other hair types. It can be easily damaged and hard to style because it often falls flat. It has a tendency to look thin, and is often weighed down with heavier products, so it’s important not to over moisturize! Interestingly, people with fine hair actually have more hair in total than people with other textures. Take the no-poo route with a low-lather, fast-rinsing, soap-free cleansing conditioner designed to enhance shine, suppleness, and anti-static control. Our go-to formula contains non-stripping ingredients to cleanse and condition for optimal manageability … in other words, it won’t weigh hair down.
MEDIUM
Medium hair holds style and responds well to chemical processes. For optimal results, opt for a no-poo formula for medium hair with natural ingredients such as acai to cleanse and condition to restore suppleness, shine, bounce, and anti-frizz control.
COARSE
Coarse hair is stronger than other hair types. It tolerates heat well and resists breakage better than fine or medium hair along with being resistant to many types of chemical treatments such as coloring. Use a formula that’s jam-packed with moisturizing ingredients like avocado — it’ll cleanse and deep condition for smooth, shiny and supple results.
CURLY
Whether they’re tightly coiled or loose; curly strands can be particularly complex because each individual stand can define its own curl pattern. Challenges include frizz, lack of definition and separation, length shrinkage and dryness. Use a lightweight no-poo shampoo that’ll enhance your natural curl definition and bounce — and be sure it’s not made with parabens, heavy silicones or harsh salts.

Har-dee-har! *chuckle* Ok when I saw this blog in my feed I lol’d. No poo? Is that a thing now? I had no idea it meant shampoo! 🙂
Karen says
Yes, it’s definitely a thing! I do it and I think it works great. 🙂
Kiss & Make-up says
I’ve always wondered about this… But I’m still not sure if I could do this. The slightest hint of greasiness grosses me out…
Karen says
You could always start with doing no-poo on the mid-shaft and ends and shampooing just the roots, and slowly transitioning to leaving out the shampoo. That’s one way to go about it.
Kiss & Make-up says
Maybe I’ll try it! Make it my New Year’s resolution or something 😉

I had to get past the “no poo” headline and stop laughing before I read lol. I actually have been using the Matrix co-wash and I love it! Oh and Oribe has a really awesome one I love even more, smells so good! And works really good too.
Karen says
Glad to hear that you love this, Metta! What’s your hair type like?
Metta says
My hair is super thick, not quite coarse but really curly when wet, so I go back and forth between the curly formula and coarse formula to help with the bulk. But I found the Oribe after I used matrix and I love it more than those. The Oribe gets it really clean and your hair is still soft after.

“No-Poo Movement?
….is that a pun? LOL
i am not sure it is a good pun for hair though……
Karen says
Haha, no it’s a real thing that’s been around for a long time. It’s only been within the last few of years that more brands have been doing products focused on it. I’ve been doing it for the last 7 or so odd years. It works!

I have fine hair and I used to wash it daily. But I am trying more dry shampoo and going up to 3 days. But usually I wear an “up-do” on day 2 and definitely on day 3. So I am very interested to try this!
Karen says
Hi Pamela,
If you do give it a go remember that it takes some time to get used to it. It took me a while (about a month or so!). I’ve been doing it off and on for the last few years and have definitely noticed a difference in my hair. It’s healthier and less dry, for sure.
Speaking of dry shampoo, I just used some a few minutes ago, lol!

The whole concept is very interesting, but I try to just go longer between washes these days to avoid heat styling as much as possible.
Karen says
Try both no-poo and limiting heat styling! I do both and it makes a huge difference.
LindaLibraLoca says
I will, thank you.

Yay, I’m glad to see that Matrix Biolage is entering into the ‘no-poo’ market. I’ll definitely be trying this out and seeing if their formula for fine hair works for me.
Karen says
Me too. 🙂 They make some great products (that also smell amazing!). If you try the fine hair formula and like it please let me know. That way if someone asks me for a recommendation for no-poo for fine hair I can say, “My friend on the blog Mitzi likes this one from Biolage…” 😀

I’ve never heard of “no poo!!” I met a girl yesterday with beautiful hair, and she said she hasn’t used shampoo in 7 years. I don’t know if I could hop on this bandwagon though.
Karen says
Hi Lauren,
It’s a concept that’s been around for a while but just now seems to have gotten a lot more attention, especially from the hair care lines. I’ve been doing it on and off for the last 6-7 years and can definitely see a difference when I do it. Doing no poo + limiting the heat styling to once a week helped my hair a lot. It takes a while but you get used to it. If you have any questions about the process let me know! Happy to help.

I use another Biolage line as one of my go-to hair lines (Biolage Fiberstrong). My hair is relatively fine, but seems to always look like it breaks. I also have a really sensitive scalp. I’m definitely curious about these.
Karen says
If you give it a try and like it let me know. 🙂
Lancy says
I’ve been thinking to give it a try for a long time now, Karen! But since I have fine hair, I am quite apprehensive about it. I’d be really glad if going no-poo helps my hair in a good way but the greasy hair – I don’t think I can handle that!
Btw, I can use Shikakai Powder (hair wash powder made of Indian herbs) if I go no-poo. This way, I could manage to keep my hair clean without using a shampoo 🙂
Karen says
Give it a go! You never know if it’ll work for you. And if it doesn’t, you can always go back to your regular routine. I do have to say that when I’ve done this method it takes a while for the hair to adjust. Once you’re used to it though it’s great.
