10 Skin Care Tips from Dr. Rey

Published in: Beauty Tips, News, Skin Care

Dr. Robert Rey, celebrity plastic surgeon and star of E! television’s Dr. 90210, was on hand at the Nordstrom Summer Trend Show in San Francisco this morning to talk about Sensual Solutions, his new line of 13 anti-aging skin care products for face and body (exclusive to Nordstrom).

I stole a few minutes of the handsome doctor’s time to talk about Sensual Solutions, plastic surgery and overall skin care and health.

1. Be religious about sun protection

“Aging today is a choice,” says Dr. Rey. By focussing on preventative measures, like wearing sunscreen, “You’ll age only if you want to…”

2. Support “the girls” at all times, even while you sleep

To keep breasts from sagging, the doctor suggests wearing a bra while you sleep. “At night… your breasts are falling into your armpit, which pulls at the ligaments and causes sagging.”

3. Consider plastic surgery as a last resort

Dr. Rey calls his Sensual Solutions line “plastic surgery in a bottle.” He designed it for women looking for a non-surgical approach to anti-aging. All 13 products contain an anti-aging complex called AActive6-Exotics, a combination of compounds from the jungles of Brazil (Dr. Rey is Brazilian) and anti-aging ingredients from Western medicine.

A few of his favorites from the line?

  • Eye Promise ($85): With a hectic schedule — long hours in the operating room and frequent cross-country flights — Dr. Rey depends on his Eye Promise cream to decrease puffiness on the skin around his eyes and reduce the appearance of dark circles.
  • From Your Lips ($40): A plumping gloss to firm, to increase volume and to smooth creases and lines on lips while simultaneously delivering a glossy, natural tint.

When we first sat down to talk, Dr. Rey reached across the space between us and applied From Your Lips on my pucker. Within about 10 minutes my lips looked and felt noticeably bigger, with a color a few shades darker than usual (but still my natural tone).

  • Inhibitox ($150): The doc developed Inhibitox — what he calls “Botox in a bottle” — after growing tired of administering Botox (!) on himself before television appearances. The penetrating cream gets deep into the skin to relax the underlying muscles.

4. Do your research if you decide plastic surgery is right for you

Not all doctors who perform cosmetic procedures are plastic surgeons. Follow these tips to find a good one, and avoid someone who’s merely taken a weekend course:

  • Look for a doctor trained as a general plastic and reconstructive surgeon.
  • Make sure the doctor is licensed and in good standing with your state medical board (click here for a list of links to state boards).
  • Listen to the buzz in your community, and chat with other women to find out which doctors they’re talking about.
  • Listen to your gut. You shouldn’t have a bad feeling about your doctor. If you walk into an office and the doctor makes you feel uncomfortable or creepy, move on.
  • Plastic surgeons often have books filled with before and after pictures of their work. The more documentation and pictures they can show you, the better, so look for thick books and stacks of pictures at the office.

5. Stop (or don’t start) smoking

Smoking destroys the skin, and Dr. Rey sees the evidence all the time in his medical practice. When two sisters or twins visit and one of them smokes, it only takes a second to guess which one’s the smoker.

6. Drink lots of water

Drinking water plumps the cells and flushes toxins from the body.

7. Give up caffeine

According to Dr. Rey, “It’s the number one cause of cellulite.”

8. Exercise!

It promotes mental and physical well being, and for those reasons and more, it’s a great anti-aging tool.

9. Cut back on stress

Stress is a major ager. Dr. Rey suggests daily meditation and regular exercise to keep stress under control.

10. Nourish your inner beauty

“Your spirit matters. Go to church, go to temple, whatever you do — you’ve got to do something spiritual. Or, simply help out in your community. This builds inner beauty, and beauty really starts there.”

I looove Dr. Rey’s show! You’re so lucky to have met him!

How interesting that he has made a Botox cream due to his own laziness 🙂

Hope you’re having a good weekend! Escape from Alcatraz is tomorrow!!

  5. sarahPUFFY! says:

  6. CC says:

I like his hair cut this way much better…I’ll keep tip #2 in mind for later, but it sounds uncomfortable!…From Your Lips and Inhibitox sound interesting – I’ll have to keep those in mind if I’m ever near a Nordstrom…#7: I had no idea that caffeine was a leading culprit for cellulite – especially since those anti-cellulite lotions have caffeine to reduce the appearance of cellulite and sagging. Weird! Thanks for reporting on the event for us!

  7. Jessi says:

Beautiful picture of you and Dr. Rey. You look so pretty. The yellow dress looks amazing on you.

  8. Rachel says:

Wow! Dr. Rey looks really good there. I’ve watched Dr. 90210, and didn’t think he looked as “dayum!” as he looks in these pics! That being said.. I think Sensual Solutions sounds like some sort of feminine product or a sexual product lol, not a skin care product.

Also, I like taking my bra off at night.. but I might think about wearing one *sometimes*… I don’t think I could do it every night.

  9. Nicole15 says:

Wow, Dr. Rey is looking very “South Beach”! LOL:)

Awesome you met him Karen! Great post.

  10. cloudburst says:

Do Dr’s from LA always look like that?! LOL, that dude is crazy. Anyways, Marilyn Monroe used to sleep with a bra on…I don’t know if I could handle it.

  11. Martha says:

Not to be rude, but is it me or does it look like Dr. Rey has breasts in the last photo?

  12. Ann says:

Martha… I think it’s because the shirt looks a bit effeminate…. I do watch his show though. thanks for the recap Karen!

  13. Redhead says:

LOL, Martha, looks like it! I think it’s just his buff-ness, though. 😉
I see you’re wearing your Calvin Klein b-day dress! It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “birthday suit”, haha!
Great skincare tips..if only I’d read these BEFORE I sat in the sun back-up in a tide pool at the beach yesterday. I’d put a sufficient amount of sunscreen everywhere except the backs of my legs, and now they’re burnt to a sore, coral red crisp :O

  14. claudia says:

OMG! You met Dr. Rey and had a picture taken with him?? *dies*

  15. Tove says:

I actually do sleep in my bra, so now I feel validated, haha.

    • Lana says:

No, no, no … do NOT sleep with your bra on!!!

There’s a strong correlation between how many hours per day a woman wears a bra and breast cancer, probably due the restriction of lymph flow. Women who sleep in their bras have a particularly high incidence of breast cancer.

This is truly terrible advice from a doctor!

  16. Sally says:

Karen, that dress was featured in the Houston Chronicle’s style section! Just thought you’d like to know! :)You are workin’ it!

  17. Rachel says:

    lolol Martha

  18. Anh says:

That dress is so cute on you Karen! I saw your earlier blog with the site picture of the dress and it was just meh. It looks good on a person!
    .-= Anh’s last blog post… homie hopping =-.

  19. Stephie says:

You look WONDERFUL in that birthday dress! That’s so awesome you got to interview him. Seems like a nice guy.

  20. Karen B says:

That dress looks like a million dollars on you dear! 🙂

  21. jojo says:

u look incredible here! makeup is perfection and your outfit is gorgeous!

  22. Victoria says:

    I’m thinking…..what a V neck he’s got on….ha ha ha

AND….if anyone should decide to sleep in a bra, make sure it has NO wires – they are not good for you!

I consulted a specialist not long ago – and he said, that no woman should wear a wired bra, since the wires are pooking at the body natural painkillers ( under the armpits ) so by wearing a wired bra, you a making your body think it’s in pain….

  23. Didi says:

OMG! That’s awesome you got to meet Dr. Rey! He looks hot and I love his personality (although it’s a bit bordering on creepy at times).
    .-= Didi’s last blog post… Epilation by Threading =-.

  24. Sarah says:

Wear a bra to bed? not so much….
    no caffeine? not so much…

  25. tatiana says:

OMG u took a pic with Dr. Rey! I’m such a fan but why does he have to wear a shirt with such a low V-neck? And the dress looks amazing with your skin.

  26. heyhey says:

Karen you look so sunny! Dr. Rey… he looks greasy. That’s a lot of man cleavage right there. I’m sure he’s a sweetheart in person, but I seriously want to give him a wash and a proper shirt.

  27. Julie Moodley says:

I have pigmentation marks on my skin.
