Did I wake up with my hair looking like this? HELL NO, GIRL! This is all R+Co’s doing. I’ve been using a styling product in their line called Sail Soft Wave Spray ($29).
It’s the one in the blue bottle with the sailboats on it (kinda looks like a Monet painting).
Basically, it’s beach wave witchery, and I loooove it. It’s a salt spray that encourages a wavy texture, and then locks that wave into place with medium-level hold. It also lifts hair for loads of volume and, here’s the kicker, leaves your strands feeling super soft.
If you know your salt sprays, then you probably also know that in order to get that roughed-up beach waves effect, most salt sprays will leave your hair feeling crunchy (*ahem*, Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray).
Yes, all that wavy texture is awesome, but the trade-off is hair that doesn’t feel great when you run your fingers through it. At least I don’t think so.
That crunchiness is an issue for me. I don’t like it when my hair feels stiff, overworked or lacquered into place. Even when I have styling product in my hair, I still want my mop to look and feel like clean, just-washed, regular ol’ hair, ya know?
Sail does the things you probably expect a styling salt spray to do — gives you waves, volume and hold — without the stiffness, and therein lies the beauty of R+Co Sail Soft Wave Spray.
I spray it on my roots and crown area when my hair is clean and dry, going layer by layer, before also spraying the ends. Then I grab a wide-barrel curling iron, and I curl random pieces for loose waves.
After the curls have cooled, I lightly scrunch everything with my fingers to coax out the waves even more. At that point, if I want some shine and a little more texture, I do a quick spray of R+Co Trophy on the top layer. But Sail usually does enough for me.
I found this video by one of the co-founders to be really helpful…
This bottle is the lurve of my hair life at the moment, and I think you’ll feel it, too, if you try it.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I’m always looking on the lookout for new salt sprays, so I’m thrilled to read a good review on this one.

Great! I hope you try it and love it.

Damn girl your hair is long! I love it!
Karen says
Hey Rachel,
Believe it or not, this is *after* a recent a haircut. This hair would swallow me whole if it could, LOL! I don’t mind it. 🙂 It’s my security blanket for now.
How long is yours these days? Happy Tuesday!
Rachel says
A little past my shoulders. It’s kinda damaged from coloring it so it never gets too long before I need to cut the straggly ends!
Karen says
Coloring can be really hard on hair, especially if you’re going lighter. Oh, and heat styling is brutal too! Do you heat style often? I found that giving up the blow dryer really helped!
Rachel says
Generally I only dry the top/front where my longish bangs are because otherwise they dry crazy.

I’m always jealous of your hair’s thickness and volume! I’ve been liking a DevaCurl spray that you would hate. HAHA! I spray it on while my hair is wet and then scrunch and let it air dry. Of course it dries completely hard and crunchy. It requires some scrunching to get it back to feeling like regular hair, but it makes great spiral curls. Apparently I’m stuck in the 80s. 🙂 Oh, speaking of, I caught a couple of eps of Glow. So far, so good!
Karen says
Haha, I used DevaCurl back in the day. Used to go to a Deva salon, even, until the stylist (who was just about to leave for a month-long trip to Thailand), completely changed the part in my hair… Sigh. Anyway, do you do the whole system where you use a t-shirt to blot your hair dry?
So glad you are liking Glow! *body slams from the top rope*
Kim says
No, I’d tried a couple of samples from Sephora but never bought a full size of anything. I used to use a Redken curl spray that was discontinued, so one of the curly haired stylists at the salon I go to said how much she liked the DevaCurl version. I do like it!
I finished binging and definitely liked it. It was light and fun but I had a misty moment or two. I was a sucker for Machu Picchu’s ending. Her character reminded me of Dustin (my fave!) from Stranger Things. Always smiling with those cheeks you could just pinch. 🙂

Your hair is gorgeous! Just had mine cut this weekend. I wanted a trim shape up that I could still put in a pony tail and when she took the first snip I said, “That’s too short” her reply was, “It only looks that way because of layering”. I ended up with a chin length bob. Grrr! Anyway, this spray looks like what I wanted to use on my hair before this last haircut.
Looks like another 7 month wait before I get my hair cut again. It’s so hard to grow longer hair.

Ohhhh girl your HAIR! It looks amazing, the salt spray agrees with you. Is your hair still growing crazy fast after Connor Claire? I recall my hair was the longest and healthiest it had ever been for almost a year after having my son. I believe I shall pick up some of this, so I can be the gothiest girl with the beachiest hair. 😉
Karen says
Hi Nicole,
Gothiest girl with the beachiest hair, I LOVE IT!
My mane still isn’t at its pre-pregnancy levels; it’s long but it’s still on the thin side (which is why I’ve been using lots of texturizing and volumizing hair products). I can still see it especially on the temples! I lost at LOT of it when she was about 6 months old. It was so scary seeing so much of it fall out in the shower!
How old is your son?
Nicole says
Hi is…*cry…19 now. A long time ago when I was trying to grow my hair (after for some crazy reason cutting it above my shoulders) a girl at the waxing salon suggested Nioxin for thinning hair. It not only helps it thicken up but it makes it grow fast. It does work! Might help with the hair you are still shedding (yes it is SCAAARY to see the hair coming out!!).

I really don’t like the crunchy feeling either. And I feel like my hair is dried out by most salt sprays as well.

Your makeup and skin looks AMAZING! Would you mind sharing what makeup you have on in this post? foundation? blush? eye makeup?
Thanks!!

You’re looking fabulous here.
Love that top and the glow.
Where can I get a top like that?
