YSL Gloss Pur: Hello, Hibiscus!

Published in: Makeup, Product Reviews

Things I wish I had fewer of: chin hairs, Nutella cravings, and embarrassing outbursts.

Things I wish I had more of: pairs of shoes with four-inch heels, free time, and colorful yet low-maintenance lipglosses.

I may be blind as a bat without my glasses and shorter than most middle schoolers, but at least my lips look good thanks to Yves Saint Laurent Gloss Pur in #9 Pur Hibiscus ($30). :)

Loaded with shine, this fuchsia cutie is one of four glosses in the YSL summer makeup collection (NOTE: YSL’s rolling all four shades into their permanent line). Its semi-sheer, easy-to-wear color means not having to worry about gloss edging past your natural lip line or accidentally smearing all over your face.

The texture feels thick but isn’t sticky, and despite an unusual flavor and scent (like black pepper and sweet watermelon, but in the BEST possible way), it’s a sensory success.

NOTE: Yep, pepper and watermelon, but I think it works in an odd bacon-and-chocolate kinda way.

For the price of a case of Nutella, #9 Hibiscus makes me feel full-on fancy, embarrassing outbursts aside. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

You might like YSL Gloss Pur in #9 Hibiscus if…

  • You don’t mind the steep price
  • You like semi-sheer pigments
  • You like low-maintenance lipglosses
  • You don’t mind the strong (but oddly pleasant) flavor and scent

Words that haunt me..

“fuchsia”

I know how to spell it correctly, but whenever I’m typing my fingers insist on spelling it “fuschia” instead. EVERY TIME! I was visibly straining to type it correctly up there, like the universe didn’t want it to be spelled that way.

“Don’t do it, Karen! Please. NO! Don’t type the “c” before the “s”. Oh, gawd, she did it! WE’RE ALL DOOMED!!!”

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Oh this looks so wonderful on you!!! Beautiful color! Unfortunately I hate the scent of YSL lip products..
Aw, Tabs looks so great, just look at him posing!
And btw I never know how to pronounce fuchsia, in my language it’s written similarly (fuksija) so the pronunciation shouldn’t be that off but I always end up saying something like ”fusion”!

    • Kate & Zena says:

It’s pronounced “few-SHA” in English. Which language is your native language? I want to say Polish…

If you get Revlon by you, they make a Creme Gloss called Fiercely Fuchsia that’s the same color as YSL. Revlon’s is more pigmented and doesn’t have a real strong fragrance. I can’t remember if it has more product or not. I don’t have it next to me.

  2. Kathryn says:

I think the YSL Gloss Pur smells like Mango, though it took me a while to figure out what I thought it smelled like.

  3. Jackie says:

LOL. I have the same problem with fuschia…ugh I mean fuchsia. lol.Seriosusly, thank goodness for spell check because my fingers tend to want to misspell it every time! Bad fingers! lol

  4. lexi says:

Wow – that’s what it looks like without a liner? Interesting but I have a feeling this is going to give me a bad reaction on my lips. I had to return a YSL lipstick back to Sephora because it irritated me within hours of wearing.

  5. beth says:

    It is a gorgeous color!

  6. ooh I love this color. It’s almost like a creamy…popsicle-ish pink. hahaha you should do all your lip swatches like this. The heart made me happy :) And so does Tabs! I wish I could pose like that

I’m amazingly jelous fo your height actually hah! I’m 5 8′ and HATE it so much haha! Lucky duck!

    • Kate & Zena says:

Oh, to be 5’8″. That will be the day for me. Being short is overrated man, especially when it comes to posing in family photos when your entire family is taller by three inches to a whole foot. Be glad that you can reach the top shelves at home or in the grocery store because I can’t! It’s a good thing I’m so creative or I’d never get anything from the top shelves!

      • Rae says:

YOU! Why do I not see your super-fierce bangs in your icon? *raises brows and taps nails loudly on desk* :P

(Being short def. is overrated. Do you stack other boxes, or do you climb onto a lower shelf and hope no one sees you?)

(I do the latter… and yes, I have been caught :o)

        • Kate & Zena says:

I haven’t decided to change the photo on this e-mail!!! So sue me. :p I’m being lazy.

When I have to grab something from a high shelf, it’s a combination of standing on my tippy toes on the bottom shelf and do the “Zena Food Snatch” technique. Basically, I sweep my arm back and forth until the box comes to a place where I can swipe it. If that doesn’t work, I look for a large, long object to reach it. I’ve never been caught. It could be I’m really good at it.

If I’m at home, I climb onto the countertops. Using chairs is doing it the normal way and, therefore, lame. It wasn’t unusual for my mom to wake up at 6 AM and find that I was sitting eating my breakfast of Cheerios when I was three years old. I woke up at 5 AM after my dad left for work. I wasn’t going to wait for my mom to wake up to get me my darn Cheerios!

          • Rae says:

LOL! You’re definitely the master of the “Zena Food Snatch” :P I used to do the awkward hop-and-sweep, but gave it up in favour of climbing. (If you hop too much, you end up all woozy… and that’s when you get caught by tall people with disapproving faces. They’ll never understand!)

I climb onto countertops as well :D I’ll do you one better, though… so does my mom! (I got it from her, not because I was desperate for Cheerios ;) Tbh, I couldn’t stand breakfast cereal until just a few years ago. It was so dry, and gross, and dryyyy!)

You’re not the only one…I totally want to do the “fuschia” thing, too!

  9. Yuki says:

In my mind, I say a bad word, then “sha.” I can’t help it! It helps me remember! I just hope I don’t let it slip out of my mouth one day :/ !!!

  10. Rae says:

Lol! I do the same thing with fuchsia — it’s such a bad habit that I’ve had to set up my autocorrect to catch my mistake! The combination of black pepper + watermelon does sound strange… so, of course, colour me intrigued :)

Hehe! Lookit Tabs in the first picture: “Whatchu lookin’ at, woman?”

The gloss is really pretty, but $30 is too much for me… I’m a poor, just-graduated college student with loans and no job, lol.

  13. caitlin says:

This post made me laugh out loud. The gloss is beautiful but the PICTURES! I love how our kitties always love to BITE BITE BITE and then lick lick lick like “ohhh I love you so muchhhh.” You’re still in shock like, “YOU BIT ME!” And the kitty has already moved on. “I licked it afterwards! You can’t get mad!” What a handsome boy Tabs is. Makes me miss my little kitties. They’re finely little one year olds!

    • Karen says:

Aww, I remember when they were just born! You’re so lucky to have had them when they were babies. Sometimes I wonder what Tabs was like when he was a wee kitten.

How are your cats, btw? And what’s new with you?

      • Caitlin says:

The babies are just fine! They’re starting to catch their first lizards, meeses, and birds so my mom is all distressed haha. Things are just dandy though! I’m in Colorado all summer taking summer classes, so it’s a wee bit lonely, but I have so much work to do that it’s not too bad. Gives me plenty of time to read my favorite beauty blog! I keep teasing that I want to get a kitty here, but I travel so much that it just wouldn’t be fair. Oh well!

  14. amy says:

The hot pink is HAWT. It reminds me of NARS Easy Lover lipgloss, but creamier and more pigmented.

  15. Sabrina says:

Ooooh, that’s very hot! Tabs is a big kitty! Much bigger than my kitty. Although mine probably makes up for his size in fierceness. LOL.

  16. lo says:

Oh man, that color is seriously delish! I want… even though my wallet doesn’t :(

    • Karen says:

It’ll be around for a while, so if you really want it you could always put away a few pennies here and there for a lipgloss fund! I do that with perfumes and MAC collections, hee hee!

  17. Karen B says:

You make those fuchsia and coral shades shine, doll. Looks really really pretty on you :)
I’m afraid I’ll stay with my Clinique Superbalm Moisturizing Gloss: LOVE it.

haha! I’m 4’11″….my 4 year old daughter is almost taller than me. BUT then again hubby is way over 6 feet tall! AND I’m an inch taller than my mom! SCORE!

  21. noemii says:

I kind of stared and examined the first two photos with you and Tabs ..it looks like he’s photoshopped in there ! It’s so strange when pets actually stop and pose . My puppy is so easy to take photos of ..but my older dog . Forget about it ! >.< Though i think it was easy to take pictures of her because she was filling sick :(
A friend of mine is very proud of her height …you couldn't just say she was almost 5' 2" you had to say she was 5' 1/1/2" ! I'd always tease her about it when the topic of height ever came up. Especially when we had to go over "the wall."
Oh, and were you really bored or do you really just love this lipgloss ? Lol . It's really lovely but i don't have the dough and i could never pull off such a bright colour !

  22. gio says:

That gloss is hawt! If only it was’t so pricey *sighs*

I do the same thing with fuchsia, I can never spell it right. :)

I <3 that first picture so much! :)

The gloss is awesome but you and Tabs in that picture — priceless! ;)

  25. Kim says:

I learned an important gloss lesson yesterday – when it’s 95 degrees outside and you can’t possibly stop your face from looking like a sweaty mess, it’s not a great idea to put on your Superbalm. It makes your husband say “um… wow…. very… um… shiny? sticky?”.

  26. Scientific Housewife says:

Looks great on you but I couldn’t pull it off!

  27. Van says:

Karen you’re so funny! The gloss looks gorgeous on you girl :)

Hope you have a great day!

Ps. Tabs is HUGE!!! Still a cutie, but man, what a big cat!!! :P

  28. Christin says:

Tab’s is a big kitty huh? how much does he weigh? My fat cat weighs close to 15lb and my mom refuses to put her on a diet.

  29. Alexandra says:

That looks a pretty colour. Just love my pink :)

Is anyone happy with there height ? It doesnt seem so. Im 5 ft10 and hate that its hard to get clothes that are long enough. Not many places over here,do a tall range.

  30. Wendy says:

I luv YSL glosses and I hate that they make excellent colors Limited Editions grrrr! especially loves the golden gloss in #26 and 29, Hey Karen are these gonna be on the permanent line as well? Do you Know? Can you tell?
And yes fellow readers the smell is kinda funky but it goes away and when all else fails use a juicy tubes in top of it in peach yum!

  31. tanja says:

Lipgloss looks great! But what really caught my attention: Tabs is such a big kitty! Wow! My cats look like midgets compared to that.

  32. Bella says:

This post convinced me to buy this gloss! It’s supposed to be a mango scent though. Do you use liner or another lip product underneath?
