How do you feel about blue mascara and lashes? That’s a tricky one, isn’t it? For years I wasn’t sure where I stood on the subject. They’re almost like the Zac Efrons of the makeup world — people find them either terribly exciting, or not exciting at all.
There was a time I’d spot someone wearing blue lashes and think, “Sooo ’80s,” but now I’m seeing blue in a whole new light…
What can blue do for you?
Well, if you have brown eyes, A LOT! It’s hard to ignore a fringe of blue lashes batting above a pair of big brown eyes.
Swatch of YSL Blue Lagoon Mascara Aquaresistant
But if you have eyes of a different color, one or two coats of a shimmery neutral gold, beige or brown on your lids equals an easy and eye-catching, yet highly wearable summertime look. 🙂
YSL Mascara Aquaresistant in Blue Lagoon
Before you plunk down your money for a new (or your first) blue mascara, take a quick look at YSL’s electric blue Mascara Aquaresistant in Blue Lagoon ($30) from the company’s summer makeup collection. It’s a new waterproof addition to YSL’s permanent collection, and I wore it a lot last weekend because it does something on my lashes that most blue mascaras don’t — it actually works!
With one layer of Blue Lagoon
Some tinted mascaras just don’t show up on my dark black lashes at all. Maybe they aren’t thick enough or don’t catch the light effectively, I don’t know, but Blue Lagoon practically SHOUTS!
Nekkid lashes
And then there’s the curl hold — Off. The. Hook. One coat tightly locks in the curl from my Shu Uemura Lash Curler. NOTE: I’m still not sleeping very well, and Blue Lagoon’s fantastic curl hold has been coming in handy lately. Curled lashes help me almost look like I’m wide awake, ha!
Since YSL made Blue Lagoon waterproof, it held up well during yesterday’s freak rain storm in the East Bay, not running or streaking after a sprint from the restaurant to where we parked the car, and I didn’t even have an umbrella.
More pros and cons
But Blue Lagoon isn’t a total party…
- It starts to smudge a little along the outer corners (on the upside, at least it doesn’t flake) within about an hour
- It’s not what I’d call a volume-boosting, uber-lengthening superstar. I can see a difference from it in both areas, but the difference is not as dramatic as I’d like (NOTE: Of course, starting with a layer of black mascara underneath it helps)
- It gets sticky if I use more than one coat, but the formula stays wet long enough to separate with a lash comb
Blue Lagoon is a high end (read: expensive) tinted mascara with exceptional color and curl hold, and if you’re looking for a one-stop dramatic eye makeup look, it might be worth a splurge. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B
You might like YSL Blue Lagoon mascara if…
- You want a tinted mascara to actually tint your lashes
- You’re happy with just a little extra volume and length
- You have brown eyes (I think it really makes ’em POP!)
Rainy days and Mondays
Isn’t that the title of a song? If it isn’t it should be, LOL! What’s the weather like out your way? It’s cold and rainy here… Where’d you go, Mr. Sun?

Pretty! Have you ever tried the Diorshow version? I had my makeup done by celeb MUA Kevianno (who is a GOD, btw), and he put the Diorshow blue on the tips of my lashes. And… whaBAM! It was awesome.

purty! grr it’s cold and windy here! we’re practically halfway through may, it’s not supposed to be cold anymore! I love that blue, it seems like a nice lengthening, non-clumping mascara as well. I don’t like when you have to sacrifice quality for color

Sigh, I am a total sucker for bright blue mascara – I will have to check this out!

Holy crap that is really blue! A couple days ago I was at my Shoppers Drugmart and found a bright purple waterproof Clarins mascara. I’m guessing you might like that one too! I want it for myself. 😀

Wow! That IS pigmented. Love it. Very summery. I like Benefit’s BadGal blue too, but it’s not as blue as this one.

Karen, have you tried the new Physician’s Formula mascaras? I got the purple one the other day and the color payoff was great. I’ve got brown eyes and dark lashes, so most tinted mascaras don’t show up all that well on me. However, these PF ones are amazing-I’ve seen the green and blue too on both blue and brown eyed friends and they looked gorgeous. The volume and length are pretty good as well, plus since the mascaras are double ended (color/black), you have more options for your buck. Speaking of which, it was only $11!
Mrs. Kinne says
That is blue!
The only colored mascara I’ve tried lately is BadGal Plum, and the color wasn’t dramatic enough for me. This, however, looks super fun! 🙂

I’ve worn blue mascara before but I found it to be young for me. This makes me want to pull it off again!

Karen, I can’t help but smile and think “OMG 80s” when I see blue mascara too. That said, you told me MC Hammer… I mean Harem… pants are back, so why not colored mascara? 🙂
And yes, I believe the lyrics are Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down. If it makes you feel better, weather wise, our first May weekend was 80 degrees, then we had a snow storm on Wednesday, then it was 70 degrees later in the week and it snowed again on Sunday. Depending on the day, we’re alternating between a lawn mower and a snow shovel. At least it’s sunny today! Hope you have a great Tuesday! 🙂

I’ve never tried tinted mascaras as I’m afraid I can’t pull it off but this one is so beautiful and pigmented! It’s nice to see a colored mascara that actually shows up.

Warm Houston day yesterday… but we had a gloomy start to it.
That mascara is fascinating. I can see me fluttering blue tinted lashes at the Hubs during our date nights! LOL.
I like it ….

Hi Karen! I dont think I could pull off the blue mascara. I feel its too “teenager-y” for me. I do like the idea of blue liquid eyeliner instead though (like the milani or Estee lauder bronze goddess blue liquid liners you have reviewed)! It is cold and rainy in Chicago today too! It has only been in the 50’s and 60’s here all week! blah!

Since colored/blue mascara can be a bit over the top (not to mention overwhelming for blue eyes), what I like to do is put on my black mascara as usual (or minus one coat) and then put a coat of the blue over it. It might defeat the purpose of wearing blue mascara, but I find that when I’m in a fun mood, this adds just the right amount of color without looking crazy :). Oh, and the one I usually wear is Benefit’s BadGal Blue, but I know Maybelline’s blue mascara used to work great for me back in the day too.

Blue mascara gives me too many flashbacks to eighth grade. I think I wore blue, teal, and possibly purple mascara all that year.

Hey Karen!
I hope today is going well for you! I usually don’t like tinted mascaras that much, but it is well pigmented and really looking nice on you. have you tried ysl’s mascara singulier (I think that’s the name)? I tried a sample of it and now I’m counting the days to get a full size! it has a crazy curl hold like this tinted one and gives crazy long lashes too, which is a little bit justifying the price 😀 and it has a really beautiful rosy scent (it is very light) which I’m enjoying very much. I think you should give it a chance 🙂

Every now and then, I love colour mascaras. My favourites are purple and blue and they do make brown eyes pop. With the right formula, the colour shows up but it is not over the top. A few years back, MAC makes a line of Plushlash mascaras in colour and I get compliments whenever I wear them. Sadly, they discontinued them and I haven’t found anything that is comparable in colour pigmentation, voluminzing and affordability since.

I have to say, I have never been a big fan of blue mascara… I had a friend who was obsessed with the stuff for over a year, and all I can remember is big blue goops hanging from her eyelashes -shivers-. Plus my general everyday makeup look is more polished but refined, so I stick with my comfort-zone of neutral shades. However this mascara looks like it would make a great impact on a night on the town. I may actually try this!
