Tangerine essential oil has a calming effect? For reals? Just when I thought I had enough Hawaiian handmade soap to keep me squeaky clean until summer, I ran into this bar of Love Child, made by The Indigenous Soap Company ($8.50 for 5-oz.).
A line on the packaging about tangerine oil, which supposedly helps children chill the eff out, sealed the deal.
Even though my childhood was — holy crap! — decades ago, I need all the calming help I can get on high stress days. If tangerine oil takes my mental sh*zz down a notch or two, then I’m all for it.
Love Child’s one of seven soaps from the small local line, which is based on Oahu. I snagged a bar when I was at the Blue Hawaii Cafe at Ala Moana getting an acai bowl the other day (ever have one of those? so good!), but you can buy ’em at stores all over Hawaii and online at indigenousoap.com.
This particular soap’s supposed to be gentle enough for kids, and I’d believe it from the short and sweet ingredient list. It’s made with lots of natural good-for-your-skin stuff (like shea butter and aloe vera gel) and without synthetic preservatives, color or fragrance.
Small touches like the “born on” date, drawings, feel-good text and the hidden “soap of fortune” lend a really personal touch.
So that’s all I needed to free my doubts, *smacks forehead*!
Love Child smells earthier and more herbal than Hana Lima’s light, feminine fragrances; my nose gets notes of crushed rosemary and fresh orange peels. I’m gonna use it in the kitchen, but if you like more unisex scents in your shower you might want to keep a bar in the bathroom.
I’ve been washing my hands throughout the day, and so far I’m really enjoying Love Child’s light scent, big bubbles and rich moisture. Whether or not the calming effect is legit still remains to be seen, but I’ll be sure to send you a note from nirvana if it does.
PRICE: $8.50

Speaking of feeling good
Have you heard Yogi Tea? They make herbal blends that you can find at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and Vitamin Shoppe. Since it’s cold season, I’ve been drinking gallons of their Echinacea Immune Support tea (okay, well, more like a few cups a day). Anywho, their tea bags usually have different quotes and sayings on them, and today mine said this:
Kind of a nice thought, right?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Tangerine….calming effect? Well, I always thought citrus has refreshing and uplifting effect. Love the cute wrapping! 🙂

Something like that, LOL! It’s the first I’d heard of it, but a couple of organic websites mention it supposedly works.

Fresh orange peels sound yum. The packaging is cute too.

Hi Mildred,
It smells very yum!
Do you use any special beauty brands for your little one’s bath time?
Appu says
Sounds like a great soap and the packaging is uber cute! I am more of a body wash person but don’t mind trying handmade, natural soaps now and then. If only all soaps had such cute packaging 🙂
Karen says
I like the packaging, too, especially the hidden fortune.

I love yogi tea! no matter how cheesy the sayings on the tags are, I always read them. The soap sounds very luxurious~~in a nice and natural way.

I just drank another cup of Echinacea! Have you ever had the Throat Coat? It’s soo good.

Does everything in Hawaii have awesome packaging or are you just picking out the best stuff for us? 🙂 I love the idea of tangerine oil (orange is one of my favorite scents in lotions/body products). Reading about all of this is making me want to get a roll of Tropical Fruit Life Savers, which I think I’ll do when choosing a lip balm today! I always loved those and haven’t had them since I was a kid. Hopefully they still make ’em!
That’s a very nice sentiment from the tea bag, too. I’m going to keep it in mind because Susan Miller thinks today’s going to be a tough day. Thanks so much for turning me on to her… 😉
Karen says
I heart Tropical Fruit Life Savers! Coconut is my favorite flavor. 🙂 Have you ever had their gummy Savers? SO GOOD!
You know what’s amazing about Susan Miller is that she’s always so spot on. She really knows her stuff. 🙂

I’m planning a trip to Trader Joe’s and am totally going to check out that yogi tea! Thanks! 🙂

You’re welcome, Kerry. Let me know what you think of it (I’m drinking a cup of it now, btw)!

Yogi tea is quite cool actually. I used to drink their Chocolate flavoured tea – it really helped me with sugar cravings.

oh! a glycerin free soap, awesome, and its coco-oil based, even better! im def going to order some of this! ive been on a big bar soap kick since the summer, but glycerin makes my skin feel rubbery and gross. right now im using nubian heritage soaps, the black african one and the hemp and vetiver one, they smell delicious, but i dont feel any great effects on my skin. i guess smell is more important than function, to me, but still looking for a soap that leaves me soft as well as smelling yummylicious. oh i also like the new coconut bar soap from softsoap, that smells diviiiiiiine 🙂
