Green Safari
I dream of a world where every eyeshadow on the market lasts from dawn till dusk! A world where shadow pencils like Milani’s purposefully misspelled Shadow Eyez 12 HR Wear Eyeshadow Pencils last long enough to make it through three cups of ginger tea (two words: tummy troubles) spaced four hours apart, and Aquatic Style, my favorite of the six shades, glows strong through six spontaneous chair dance sessions spread out across the entire day … because there’s nothing quite like seeing that electric teal flashing back at you in the mirror as you rock out to that part at the end of Wanna Be Starting Something. “Mamma say, mamma saw, mamaco saw!”
And most of all, I dream of a world where these $5.99 pigmented pencils last long enough to endure a full 12 hours of being ignored by the huskiest tabby in Novato, who, yes, is back to hating his gravy chef/admin assistant once again.
A full 12 hours? Do dreams really come true?
Like a powerful pegasus sweeping down from my multi-colored makeup dreams, Milani’s Shadow Eyez Pencils deliver saddlebags filled with pigment and shine, and a texture so smooth and soft that it makes baby bunnies envious.

But whether I wear them with or without primer, they succumb to the lassitude on my combination dry/oily lids after only four hours.
Four hours… Where’s the 12-hour love, Milani?
Before testing them, I thought that if these managed to last 12 hours, they’d make great beach buddies on account of their longevity and water resistant claims (of course, the swatches on the back of my hand didn’t fare well when I placed them under running water and rubbed at them a little).
Shoot…
Now, if Milani were able to reinforce their water resistance and up the wear time of these to the advertised 12 hours, HOLLA! They’d have the wear time of the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Shadow Pencils (love ’em, but they’re so hard to blend) and the silky style of the NYX Jumbo Eyes.
Jackpot. 🙂
But hey, if you need a bright, shiny fix and don’t mind having to reapply halfway through the day, at least these are only $5.99.

Monday, Monday
Mine flew by in a flash! — which is good for a Monday, I guess.
I don’t have much planned for tonight other than deep cleaning my makeup brushes (still lovin’ the Burt’s Bees soaps) and watching the finale of The Voice.
My money’s on the rocker chick.
Oh, I may also stop by Target. I need some boring but necessary stuff like dish soap and paper towels.
In completely unrelated, random news, El Hub’s trying to get me to take a martial arts class. He wants to us check out a jiujitsu class tomorrow night.
I’ve always wanted to take a martial art, but I’m not sure how I feel about rolling around on a mat with a strange dude’s armpit up in my grill. Well, actually, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t like it.
I do like the idea of burning enough calories in a single workout to justify eating a big plate of greasy garlic shrimp and two scoops of rice…
Not sure where that came from. I think I’m hungry. 🙂
I’d cut a b*tch for a garlic shrimp plate from Savage Shrimp on Kauai…
Have you ever taken a martial art? What did you study?
Look out, Tuesday! Here we come!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I love Urban Decay’s Shadow pencils. Some of them are hard to blend but the one in Sin blends like a dream on me.
My experience with martial arts was one class when I was 10 and the girl that was a head taller than me was my partner and I broke my little toe… That was the end of that. Hehe.
Vijaya says
Shame about having to reapply. xP
Becca @ The Beauty Sample says
Aw that’s too bad about these pencils. I just tested out their Liquid-Like Eye Liner Automatic Propel Pencil formula and LOVED it, so I was hoping for some more Milani love here. Ah well, I much prefer a powder shadow anyway–and their new matte ones are calling to me!!!
Sunny @ Mostly Sunny says
Oh no, that’s too bad! I had high hopes for these 🙁 Ah well. I haven’t really tried any jumbo pencils, but I do use the regular UD liners for the same purpose and they work great! Seems like it’s really tricky to get lasting power right!
Warmnightsinsummer says
Wow, the colors are very pigmented! It’s a shame they don’t last that long! I really like the bright colors on you!
bisbee says
The fact that they are only $5.99 doesn’t matter, in my opinion. They don’t last…and, sorry Karen, but they aren’t pretty.
Pass!
Karen says
Hi Bisbee,
I guess it’s a look you either love or don’t love!
Nina says
I saw these pencils and passed since I have too many similar products. I did buy the new single eyeshadows and can I say — LOVEEEEE! 🙂
The shrimp looks nommy. I did go to several trial classes for BJJ since the Hubs goes. I have the strength and the cunning (it requires a lot of strategy and combination of moves)…. but I almost always get the giggles when rolling with a strange person. LOL.
I eventually might decide to go at it full time, but after I try a Barre3 class. I can only pick one (since theyre both kinda spendy) and I want to make an informed choice.
Karen says
Hi Nina,
I’ve got those singles on my to-try list next. What colors are you liking?
So, that shrimp plate — easily one of the best meals I had on the island. If you ever go, you need to stop by!
What were the trial classes? Did they throw ya into the thick of things right away?
Nina says
I got the shocking bright fushchia, the pale pink, the brown and the ivory/vanilla looking one. I LOVE them all, equally. Welllll, maybe I love the bright fushcia the tiniest bit more. It can double as a blush, and doesnt make my eyes look like I had just been punched or have pink eye. 😀
The trial classes arent a trial at all – they put you in the middle of a regular class, so you have to do the warm up (stuff I cant even describe that was all equally difficult) and then they have you roll with one of the more senior students (purple belt and up) … Its hard. I cant even describe how hard. :-d But the guys I rolled with were really awesome, and they all knew the Hubs since he has been going for years. Ive done 3 trial classes, but still need to schedule a Barre3 trial so I can finally decide.
Shrimmmppp … now im tempted to do a small shrimp/fish fry or grill on the weekend!

I bought the Champagne Toast as a dupe for UD’s Sin, and I agree with you…the staying power was not there and it creased after only a few hours, with and without primer (and my lids aren’t even that oily!) I’m puzzled by all of the positive reviews on the interwebs. Can you recommend a shadow that is brightening when worn alone?
Karen says
Hi S,
Have you tried Benefit’s Creaseless Cream Shadows in Birthday Suit or R.S.V.P.? Both brighten the lids and are really easy to apply. Here are swatches:

The brown, champange toast, green, and aqua are calling my name!!
Karen says
Pretty colors!

When i was a teenager i was in tae kwon do. I never developed a passion for it and dropped within a few months.
Karen says
Hi Jennifer,
Do you still remember any of the moves from class?
Kim says
Oh, do it, do it, do it!!!! You knew I was going to say that, I’m sure. 🙂 I’m with you on the sweaty-armpit, but that might not be the case. Give it a try – you might find that it’s a great stress reliever. If you don’t like it, it’s not like you’ve signed up for life or anything. 🙂
As for the shadow eyez, there’s only room in my heart for one makeup company with exaggerated claims. Sorry, Milani.
On a side note, have you been enjoying Game of Thrones? I’ve liked the last couple of episodes more than those at the beginning of the season.
Karen says
I am so behind on Game of Thrones. I just watched the third episode over the weekend? Is it just me, or is this season kinda dirty birdy?
Kim says
I know! It’s not just you – we’re all saying the same thing. I think that’s why I like the later (more recent) episodes better. There’s a lot less of that and a lot more story-that-matters. 🙂 Well, after episode 4, which has a pretty disturbing scene.

Give the jiujitsu a shot–my kettlebell trainer has been a long-time jiujitsu practitioner, and some of the stretches and workout warm-ups he gives to me come straight out of his jiujitsu prep.
Martial arts come in a variety of different forms and styles, and there really is a form out there for everyone. A particular form might work very well for you, and not so well for your husband and vice versa. My only experience thus far was in Tae Kwon Do, but I’m really interested in judo–completely different style. A good friend of mine really improved his balance and body awareness when he took up aikido.
Karen says
Hi LauraA,
That’s cool that you have a kettlebell trainer. I’ve read that it’s a good workout. How long have you been doing it?
EmmyJean says
Wow these look lovely! Too bad they don’t last 🙁
sarahc says
This really gets on my nerves. These look good, especially Aquatic Style, but if they don’t last what’s the point?
I guess they’re cheap.
bianca says
I have bronze deluxe & green safari & they work great for me! I have super oily skin & eyelids! They blend so much better than the UD ones! I love them!
Tina B says
Oh my gawd the caption on that shrimp photo had me cackling!!! I will have to buy one of two of these Milanis just because, I have the UD shadow pencils and love em.
Yin says
At only $6 a pop, this is a much cheaper alternative to UD for me to test the waters of bright aqua liner. 😀 Thanks for pointing these out! I can live with a short lifespan with that price.
Jenna says
I agree – I think these pencils are either to love or not to love. But for $5.99 its worth a try. Color blocking with bright colors this season is such a huge trend, why not give them a try? You could mix and match these bright colored pencils to all of your outfits. They can be work either as eyeliner or eye shadow. Substitute one of these colors for your normal eye color shadow and see what happens!
