Today my lipstick was dressed to kill, but I was not.
I wore the new NARS Dressed to Kill lipstick ($24, from the spring 2013 collection) on my lips to go with my hot pink capri sweatpants and black hoodie (heart you, Zella Galaxy!!).
So I guess that made me, “Dressed to sit on the couch and watch bad reality TV.” Or, “Dressed to pass out at any given moment.” Or, “Dressed to sit drooling on the couch while completely covered in cat hair.”
Clearly, I missed the memo, as this rich, plummy brick red, with its golden glitter sprinkles, deserves better than that. It deserved to strut down the street with skintight jeans, over-the-knee black boots and a sassy leather jacket.
It deserves man-eater clothes. And you deserve Dressed to Kill. 🙂
The shade seems nothing like a typical spring lipstick color to me, and I’m totally good with that. While it may impersonate the kind of plummy wine you’d expect to find in a fall/winter release, it has a sparkly secret up its sleeve.
Gurl, it’s got glitter (*snaps*). GOLD GLITTER!
But I didn’t really see it until I had it on my lips. Then the lil’ sparkles appeared like magic.
I don’t really notice them in the mirror unless I get up very close. Closer than an arm’s length. Close enough, say, for a secret handshake, because this glitter’s sneaky like that, like a wink-wink that only makeup die-hards would know about.
One layer of Dressed to Kill covers my lips completely, but FYI, I have to prime my lips first with lip balm, and make sure they’re totally and completely smooth; otherwise, the thick formula calls attention to any dry spots or flakes.
It also lasts. I get from 5-6 hours if I’m just chilling between meals (it stands up to coffee and tea), and even if I do have a snack, like a piece of candy from See’s (Mmm… candy…), I can get away without having to reapply.
Of course, if a basket of French fries enters my airspace, then yes, I need to touch-up when I’m done. 🙂
In a word: bangin’. It’s not your average spring lipstick, and I think it is a tad drying, but Dressed to Kill is great.
And I have a feeling it’ll love medium and darker skin tones, although paler pretties definitely shouldn’t write it off. The high contrast of a rich, opaque lip color against light skin can also look very, very dramatic and beautiful.
PRICE: $24
AVAILABILITY: January 15 at NARS counters and narscosmetics.com
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A- (long-lasting and opaque, but the formula tends to highlight any flaws or lip flakes)

Beautiful! Looks less intense on, must be bc of the gold sparkle!
Karen says
Thanks, Hafsa! Yeah, it is so much more wearable than it looks in the tube. 🙂 Hope you’re having a lovely Friday night!

I love gold glitter! I love plums right now, though they are truly not spring-y.
Bute I got also really dry lips from every NARS lipstick I had, so I pass. They have tully outstanding&beautiful colors, but the formulation does not work out for me. Not even with lipbalm.

I was trying to convince myself that I don’t need Dressed to Kill because Afghan Red is already a part of my collection. Now I’m thinking I was wrong! What would you say the key differences are between the two?
Jennifer says
Karen, you look SO amazing in red! I don’t have the confidence to pull it off but you look awesome!
Kate says
Stunning looking colour. Did you find it more drying than other Nars semi-matte shades or is it about the same. I know some people find those drying, but they seem to be OK on me.
Chris El says
This color looks amazing on you Karen! I would consider checking this out, but since my lips tend to be chapped and flake a lot, I don’t think this will work for me.
Alice Ann says
That is such a beautiful color, looks really good on you. I generally don’t like sparkle in lipstick, but this seems to add subtle dimension and lightens the color a bit. Can’t wait to try it, I’m such a sucker for Nars.

Beautiful! Something tells me that my red lippie collection will start to flourish this year and it’s all because of you. Seriously, you’re always radiating with a red lipstick shade on!

Now this is my kind of color! Love it!

I’m so glad I saw this on you. Looking at it in the tube, it looks so dark and it scared me. Now I won’t hesitate because it looks brighter then I thought. Beautiful! (on you too!)
Swatch And Learn says
This is a great shade for you, Karen! It adds glamorous colour to your whole complexion without looking too dark or dramatic, yet it’s also not neutral or plain.
Jennifer says
I can’t do dark lipsticks… they scare me! But you look great!

The trick for a smooth finish is to use the velvet lip pencil and then apply dress to kill.. My favorite is damned and dragon gril:))
