Covergirl Lip Perfection Lipstick in Darling on lips
This spring is shaping up to be a memorable one for drugstore lippies, with lips (and wallets) everywhere doing the dance of money-saving joy. First, the long-wearing $10 L’Oreal Infallible Le Rouge lipsticks left their mark; then, the buttery $6 NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams leaned in for a kiss.
But the newest girl in town is a moisturizing lipstick from Covergirl. It boasts a lightweight texture, bold (yet still budget-friendly) color and comes in a whopping 44 shades. Covergirl’s new $6.50 Lip Perfection Lipsticks were designed by Covergirl Global Creative Design Director (and magic makeup maven) Pat McGrath, who’s kinda like the Midas of my makeup world; everything she recommends turns into makeup gold. 🙂

I like to think of these Lip Perfections as gateway lipsticks for girls who don’t usually like opaque lipsticks. Applying them feels like kissing satin or fresh spun cotton candy, and I know you’ve heard this description before, but wearing them almost feels like I’m not wearing anything at all.
They have a very faint vanilla scent and flavor, which I don’t feel very strongly about one way or the other, but if you’re not a fan of scented lipsticks, it does disappear pretty quickly.
Because lipsticks with thin textures don’t typically last long, I was surprised to get four full hours from these. Better yet, as the color fades, it does so evenly, leaving behind a really pretty stain.
Covergirl gave them something they refer to as their “Silk Therapy Complex” (along with ingredients like olive oil, shea butter and aloe) to make them moisturizing, and supposedly it also helps improve lip moisture after seven days of wear. That sounds like marketing mumbo jumbo to me, but after wearing two of the colors — Soulmate (a creamy mauve) and Darling (a bluesh pink) — off and on for about a week, I don’t detect a difference in my lips… At least they aren’t drier than they were before, which is good enough for me.

For what it’s worth, you might have to pair these with a liner. They tend to migrate outside of my natural lip line, perhaps due to the combination of a thin texture and high pigmentation. I’ve been using MAC Subculture to line the edges first, and that seems to help.
And the packaging isn’t going to win any awards (at least not from me). The plastic feels rather flimsy, and I can see a tube accidentally opening in my purse.
Because these are just $6.50 each, their issues are all pretty minor, and the products themselves deliver excellent quality at an affordable price. If you’re the kind of girl who likes lightweight lip products with a lot of color, these Lip Perfections might be perfect for you.

Ohhhh, I’ve been looking at these at Wal-Mart but haven’t picked any up yet because I’ve been waiting for more reviews on them (and I’ve been on a MU no buy since I’m going to Boston in a week and am trying to save money!).
You look positively beautiful in Soulmate, Karen.

These shades both look great on you! I grabbed 2 at target the other day but I forget what the color names are.
I’m watching e! news and relaxing on the couch. I’m pretty bored!!

How is the staying power of these? I couldn’t believe when I saw all shades were sold out at my cvs. I am liking darling.

It depends on the shade- – the frostier ones tend to migrate more while the cream finishes really last. I have Siren and it stayed on for a solid 7 hours, through eating. My best friend has Hot and Fairytale, and Fairytale lasted 8+ on her for her wedding.

Very pretty colors. That pink would probably look awful on me, though.

I got this lipstick in Spellbound and Embrace (the latter looks like a crazy eggplant purple, but goes on more neutral and not ask dark… kinda reminds me of Clinique’s black honey in that way). These are TOTALLY gateway lipsticks for me, lol, as I have never been a lipstick girl… but I just love how pigmented these are, and they don’t feel heavy or too drying like every other lipstick I’ve ever tried!

Yes, Karen worked for the base in Witchita Falls for 2 yrs. Had to work a blue shirt and dark blue pants. Thought I was in the service.

Ooh, Soulmate is really pretty! I may have to lift my moratorium on lipstick purchases.
Seriously, I haven’t purchased lipstick in almost half a year. Considering I only wear red and berry shades, I eventually felt ridiculous buying the same thing over and over again, lol.

Hi! First time commenter. 🙂 Yay!
First off, I love your site. Love love love.
Is there anything you DON’T look good in? Everything always looks amazing on you, which makes me want to buy everything (not always a good thing!!).
