NOVATO (MBB) — Makeup mavens predict a dramatic rise in public nakedness over the holidays this year as legions of Urban Decay fans don the all-matte shades in the new $27 Naked Basics Palette.
Many plan to go to work naked, spend time naked in their living rooms, at clubs, and even at local eateries and shopping centers.
“Yesterday I got naked at Trader Joe’s,” said Karen, editor and co-founder of Makeup and Beauty Blog, “and with these six neutral shades, none of which are too cool nor warm, just about anyone can get naked anywhere they please.”
Honk if you love mattes! I think it’s always a great idea to have some mattes around for adding contrast, depth and dimension to eye makeup looks, and Naked Basics comes complete with six useful shades — four beiges, one medium brown and a dark brownish black.
Urban Decay, the brand that sparked a neutral eyeshadow resurgence/revolution with their Naked and Naked2 palettes, imagined that the mattes in Naked Basics could work as companion colors to the company’s other neutral shades.
Stay tuned, because Naked Basics bares all on Sephora and Ulta counters, and in select Macy’s stores soon, and online at urbandecay.com November 29.
Urban Decay Naked Basics: Stripped
- Of the six shadows, four are new (always great to see new shades from UD).
- The pans are the same size as the pans in Naked and Naked2.
- The eyeshadows last all day on my skin and don’t exhibit as much fallout as Urban Decay’s shimmery shades.
- I’ve found that some of them, like Crave (the dark brownish black) and Venus (the lightest beige), can be a little challenging to blend.
- A few of the colors remind me of MAC shades; Venus resembles Ricepaper, Foxy looks like Brule, Walk of Shame could double for Bamboo, Naked2 looks inspired by Soba, and Crave reminds me of a blackened version of Concrete.
- Great for pale gals/guys! The four lightest shades get a little lost on my tan (I’m a MAC NC42), but if you’re lighter than I am, I bet you’ll be able to see the nuanced differences between them better than I can.
Will makeup anthropologists look back at this launch 100 years from now and mark the sudden rise in public nudity as a revolutionary, daring era for beauty lovers everywhere?
According to most beauty experts, it remains to be seen. World-renowned plus-size kitty supermodel Tabs the Cat says “Mrrrow,” or, “Even with the blending issues, you could wear these six colors with most anything, even with your favorite brights. But ya know, Bobbi Brown totally does palettes in these colors all the time…interesting idea, though.”
PRICE: $27
AVAILABILITY: Coming soon to Sephora, Ulta and select Macy’s stores, and online at urbandecay.com November 29
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B (some useful, albeit not entirely original, shades here, and I’m having some minor issues with blending)

Love this. I would have passed (like I did with the Naked2) if it were a variety of finishes, but a cute, portable little matte palette like this will be SO awesome to have and carry around. It’s affordable too!
Karen says
Hi Becca,
Glad to hear you’re excited about this!
Lori says
I’m so getting this, but I wish it came out earlier so that I could take it on my vacation this weekend.
Karen says
Hi Lori,
So jealous that you’re going on vacay! Where are you headed?
Jen B says
Looks perfect for work! And love that it’s so compact and portable.
Karen says
Hi Jen,
It would be perfect for work looks, for sure! Do you have Naked and Naked2 already?
Vassileia says
So excited for this…Foxy was the first color I hit pan on in Naked 2 and I’ve been too lazy to purchase it in a single pan but now that this is being released I’m glad I didn’t. All 3 of the lightest shades look like they’ll be great highlight/everyday lid colors!
Karen says
Hi Vassileia,
Yes! You could easily take any of these colors, pop on a little black/brown liner and be totally good. 🙂
That’s cool that you hit the pan on Foxy! I’m still waiting to do that my Naked/Naked2 palettes.

Hi Karen. Just thought I’d cue you in on something involving UD. They are being acquired by L’Oreal and L’Oreal will officially become their parent company. While UD will not be testing on animals L’Oreal is still perhaps the WORST offender when it comes to animal testing. I just thought you and some of your readers might like to know about this. I originally found out about this on ‘Musings of a Muse’ and she has more details. I don’t know if you already knew this or not but like I said I thought it might be good to post the alert, so to speak, I personally would like to know what you and Tabs think as I find you both to be very insightful. 🙂
On a lighter note, that palette looks great for beginners. However, I agreed that Bobbi does it a bit better, but then again I am very biased as Bobbi was my first major make up company.
Karen says
Hi Leigh,
I really don’t know enough about it, but Tabs and I will keep our eyes and ears peeled. Please do the same. Let me know what you find out.
I can say this much about Urban Decay: they have the best pet policy at their main office I’ve ever seen, from a cosmetics company or otherwise. A bunch of their employees bring their pets to work every day. It’s a very pet-friendly working environment, and I think they love their animals as much as we do.
Leigh says
I know! 🙂 I just would hate for that to die if L’Oreals directors decide it needs to be changed. I’m a major animal lover and I would be really sad if it does :(. I have a puppy and my bf has two cats, the female one is so beautiful and cuddly. Anytime I think about them being used for animal testing (you know as a what if it was?) my tummy gets all up in knots. And I love UD so much just the way they are now! 🙂 I keep hoping that they will extend they’re eyeliner to gel pots, I bet they would stay SO creamy. 🙂
Leigh says
oops ‘their’ sorry. 🙂
gigi says
did not know about this one. very smart of them. those basic colors are really an amazing part of the naked 1 and naked 2. xx. gigi. food and beauty blogger @ http://www.gigikkitchen.blogspot.com

It sure looks like an extension of the Naked2 palette. Urban Decay has finally heard the desperate pleas for more mattes. something both the Naked palettes lacked LOL!
Aelyn says
It’s always exciting to see new palettes come out from UD!
Sarah says
I love matt eye shadows because they’re so wearable for office. Since I work full time I try to purchase make up which I could easily wear during daytime to work.
All 6 shades are amazing particularly Foxy & Walk of Shame. This is definitely on top of my Christmas wish list!

Gwen @ Makeup Toys says
Can’t wait for this palette! It is so refreshing to have matte eyeshadows after all the glitters and shimmers!
Sunny says
I think I’ll pass. It’s always great to see good-quality mattes, but I own enough similar shades already. I would have been a lot more excited if they have chosen to spice things up with variations of nude shades.
Nina says
Im buying this! I love mattes and these would make for great blending out and subtly highligthing colors!
Fieran says
I’ll pass. This palette seems to be geared towards pale beauties for sure. Out of the six shades, only 2 would work on my skin tone and that’s not really worth the 27 bucks 🙂
Angela Hall says
I’m glad they did a matte set but I would have preferred a larger palette so they could include a range of tones. For deep skin tones the first three shades aren’t really wearable. Something like Texture and Embark from MAC would have been nice to have
Lydia L says
Hey Karen!! I luv this and I’m not really a matte kinda’ girl!! I’m a SHIMMER GIRL!! LUV YA!!!
Jennifer says
Not sure about these! They seem so matte, I’m used to a little shimmer…
Vanessa says
With a title like that, I thought for sure you were going to mention San Francisco’s ban on public nudity.
Happy Monday!
NIKITA says
I was already ready to buy while reading your Stripped remarks until I got to the last one! I’m NC40 (pinay too!) and if 4 of the 6 shades fade into your tan, then it probably won’t work for me too.
*sigh*
Kalli says
Oh man, as much I as should NOT get this (I’m a slave to UD palettes and have several, including Naked 1 & 2), I’m itching for it! I’ll just hope for some gift cards for Christmas next month!
Lisa (LAtPoly) says
Inevitability…I’ll cave and get it. Duh.
But, I wish they would have brought back some of their original mattes and added to this. Revolver (gray), Illegial (light pink matte), and Heist (or Cult) (grayish-purples) would have been great additions to this set IMO.
Miami Rose says
I can’t wait for this to come out. =D
BooBooNinja says
Karen, would you please post a photo showing these UD eyeshadows swatched alongside the MAC shades you identify in your post? Pretty please?
