My girl Jessica raved about Naked Skin One and Done by Urban Decay ($34) back when it came out last spring, and I just needed to say that, yeah, for me too, it really is all that.
I FREAKIN’ LOVE THIS STUFF!
It has the thin texture of a tinted moisturizer but the coverage of a sheer foundation, so if you’re into fast 15-minute looks or face makeup that you can apply from start to finish with your fingers, One and Done gets it done.
It covers juuust enough for most days. Some of my freckles do peek through, but I like the look because I’m still in the throes of a no-makeup makeup phase.
It blurs my pores a touch, too, with a finish that’s more satin than matte. I think it looks very skin-like.
Right now I’m alternating between One and Done, NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint and Estée Edit Skin Glowing Balm.
I wear Estée Edit when I want the least coverage and a glowing finish, One and Done when I want a little more coverage and a satin finish, and NARS Velvet Matte when I want medium coverage and a matte finish, but all three products are off the charts fantastic IMO. I like them that much!
How about you? What’s been rocking your world lately?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

For a tinted moisturizer, it still offers pretty good coverage from what I can see.

So, possibly related to this product, but possibly not: I’ve been meaning to ask you for a foundation rec. for the stage (as I perfect my “hi I’m a rockstar” makeup, ha!). My daily go-to is bareminerals, but I think the mineral SPF in that tends to wash out in flash photography or bright lighting. I want to look great onstage but “real” afterwards, too, y’know? I have these memories from when I was younger of going to shows and seeing the performers offstage afterwards, and thinking that in person they just looked CAKED with makeup. I’d rather not scare small children after my shows, lol!
I’ve been looking for something without SPF, since 1) I’m mildly allergic to chemical sunblock and 2) physical sunblock often has that white cast on stage/in photos… but I mean, if it’s magical, it’s magical.
HELP ME KAREN, lol! Foundation is still one of those things that I’m really tentative about – I feel like I’m a fish out of water when it comes time to get a new one. I need guidance! 🙂

Hi Shannon! I’m not Karen but I hope I can help. First I have a big doubt: do you want to use it everyday or only for stage and photos? Because at least what I do I use less base products when doing my normal life and until photos or reunions are involved I use a full coverage one.
So if you want to look flawless everyday what about using a light base and concealer? The Lisa Eldrigde style you cover first with concealer and then pat your foundation don’t swipe (you can do your foundation first but I think it looks more natural). What I’ve used is MAC Studio Finish concealer and MAC Face and body but any full coverage concealer works and any light foundation or tinted moisturizer, like MUFE Face and body too.
If you go full coverage but still somehow natural look for L’Oréal Pro Matte, MUFE HD or Bobbi Brown foundation stick. The three are good and without SPF.
Hope it helps.
Karen says
I love it when you guys help each other out! Thank you, Efrain for your advice.
If anyone else has some tips for Shannon, please feel free to chime in. 🙂
Shannon says
Thanks Efrain! I’m looking for a “special occasion” foundation – something that’s medium-to-full coverage but doesn’t feel or look mask-y. (I’m usually pretty low-maintenance on “normal” days, and don’t wear foundation on the reg.) I’ll check out the L’Oreal, MUFE, and Bobbi Brown options.
Efrain says
For the price try L’Orèal Pro Matte, it’s a little tricky for using fingers because it dries fast but I’m pretty sure that with a Beauty Blender or a flat top brush you can work it better.
Even with that problem I love it, in fact for me is better than some mid-high end foundations I tried. For reference I’m NC42 in some MAC foundations (My skin is more yellow and a smidge darker than Karen’s) and I use shade 107 and it’s a good match.
MAC Prolongwear foundations are good if you can grab samples of both do it, and also as Karen is right about primer, find the one which works with your skin.
Also don’t forget setting powder, silica is good but tricky and drying; however you just need a minimal amount and its diffusing properties are amazing. I know everybody loves NARS setting powder too and Urban Decay setting spray (I stay away of the latter because of the alcohol denat).
If I came across a really good high coverage foundation without SPF I’ll tell you but for now those are my recs. And I think I’ve written the Old Testament in a comment.
Shannon says
Thanks again, Efrain! I definitely need to check out some different primers – I haven’t found one I love yet. I AM, however, in love with the UD Setting Spray. I just ran out of a little sample-size bottle. Time to re-stock! In terms of setting powders, I’ve also been interested in MAC Blot Powder. Right now I use a loose setting powder, which I typically just use on my forehead, nose and chin, since that’s what gets shiny-in-a-bad-way.
Storytime – several years ago, I had an older lady come up to me after a show to give me some advice on my “look.” She said some nice things, but mostly gave LOTS of advice about needing to powder my forehead, how I should wear red lipstick, and on and on. She was trying to be helpful, I know, but it’s very odd to have someone tell you “now, you’ll really want to powder your forehead and nose to cut down on shine,” right after you’ve sung your heart out. After the conversation, I was pretty irked – I mean, I didn’t know this lady from Adam! Maybe I was going for a dewy look! Who was she to tell me how to apply my makeup?? Plus, isn’t it supposed to be about the music?? Come on, lady!! But I have to admit, after that conversation I always make sure to powder my forehead before I go on stage! 🙂

Hi Shannon,
So happy to help! Sounds like you’re looking for something that’s full coverage that photographs well, looks great on stage, and can handle the hot lights.
I’d go with something like MAC Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation. It comes in 16 shades, you only have to use a little bit of it to get great coverage (although you can build it up if need be), and it looks very natural. Plus, no matter how sweaty you get, it doesn’t move.
One thing to note is that I’ve noticed that some MAC foundations tend to oxidize on me, so you may need to go a half step or a full step lighter in order to get a shade match. If you live near a store or a counter, I’d suggest trying it out and getting a few samples first before committing.
Also, if you do end up going with this it helps to have a Beauty Blender to blend it out.
Efrain’s suggestion of doing a sheer base and then layering full-coverage is a great option as well. Actually I did that today for some pics that I took with the new MAC Selena collection! I used Urban Decay One and Done all over my face, then a stick foundation (the new one from Hourglass, which is fantastic) on my cheeks and around my mouth for extra coverage. The Hourglass one has a bit of light reflection so it might not be matte enough for stage; I’ve heard great things about the Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Stick Foundation so that might be worth checking out. You could MUFE’s Water Blend Face & Body Foundation all over, then spot cover with the Foundation Stick.
Also something to think about: get a primer. It’ll help your foundation last longer and go on smoother, and you’ll also be able to get away with using less product.
Got any more question for me? Please feel free to ask!
Shannon says
Oh man! What wealth of information! Thanks a million. I’ll trot on over to the MAC store sometime soon and get some samples. The MUFE foundation you linked looks super-amazing, too! I’ve been curious about the Hourglass foundations, since I love that line… and I’m not sure if I’m going for 100% matte, since that can emphasize my fine lines (thus leading to my mental image of creepy-after-show-lady). Maybe I’ll go on a little “foundation intensive” over the next few weeks, where I study all your guys’ different suggestions 🙂
I don’t think I’ve used a full-coverage liquid foundation since… gosh, high school? And I don’t know if I’ve ever used a stick foundation. This is gonna be a whoooole new world for me, lol!

I’ve actually never used Urban Decay products before which is so sad because I would love to try this.

It’s like you’re a mind reader because I was going to ask you how you thought it compared to NARS. I find that formula too velvety for me (though it’s true to its name). It doesn’t have enough glide for my taste. I think Benefit’s Big Easy is a pretty good middle ground, with Tarte BB being my fave for its slickness. Do you feel like One and Done might be (slippery application and finish-wise) between Tarte and Big Easy? I could be down with that!
PS Your fingernails match my toenails. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Kim,
I think you’d like the texture. It’s slippery enough to easily apply with fingers. It’s a no-drama kind of product!
P.S. Twinsies!
hanna says
That is the perfect amount of coverage for my everyday makeup.
Erin says
I wish they have a shade match for me!
Ruchita says
Thanks for the recommendation! I love easy to use products like this. NARS Velvet Matte sounds like a good product too.
I recently tries this root booster spray from John Frieda and it’s a great drugstore product. My hair is fine and tends to fall flat, but I’ve been noticing more volume when I use it.
Also, pet related – I got the kitties the Big Head water bowl from Vivipet and I’ve noticed they are drinking more water. They never liked the fountains so I’m glad this works for them.
Karen says
Hi Ruchita,
Of course I had to look up that water bowl. It’s so cute! And I love how they say it reduces whisker stress. 😀
Do the kitties all share the same food bowls, or do they have their own separate eating areas?
P.S. I’m going to try that root booster spray! I could use the help in the crown area.
Ruchita says
The kitties each have their own bowls. I need to control Mingy’s portion sizes or he will eat everything in sight. He’s usually the first one done and then waits to see what Ella and Nina left behind. 🙂
tulipthecat says
OMG…I was just noticing that my cat will drink more water if the I hold the bowl and tilt it Thanks for sharing the Big Head water bowl.
Karen says
Seriously I learn something new every day from you guys!
Ruchita says
Yay, hope your kitty likes it! 🙂
Efrain says
As I’m reapplying sunscreen everyday I’m not wearing foundation a lot but my love for L’Orèal Pro Matte is going strong as my go to foundation for parties and photos.
I’ll buy a light coverage powder but my money is with Selena and Taraji.
Karen says
GURL, I’m testing the Selena stuff right now! Just got it in today. 🙂 The mattes are really great!
Efrain says
GURL you don’t know how much I fangirled when Buzzfeed showed the entire collection and I’m eyeing the nude lipstick and the lipgloss, if I can afford it I’d look the bronzer; by the way do the pinker eyeshadow should work as blushes?
Also, I didn’t receive any notifications for new comments.
Jessica says
Yep. I’m madly in love with it too.
Gina Bullard says
HI Karen!
I’m doing ok….. and I don’t know about the foundation, I love Urban Decay – but I’m such a full foundation (coverage) girl. I just got Milani’s Conceal and Perfect foundation that Tati Westbrook uses and I”m not so sure about it… I’ve been mixing it with MUFE in a really dark shade since I’m tan, because I got the shade that matches me when I’m not. Hopefully. It’s so hard to order off the net and get the right shade!!! Tati has raved about this foundation and I hope I end up really liking it – they took 6 days to ship and I complained (I had order it for a wedding) and they sent two!!! So jeebs— I hope I end up liking it!!! I’ve used it a few times now. Tati mixes it with a drop of oil, but since I’m an oil slick, I don’t think I’ll be doing that! It did seem to wear well throughout the day, and it didn’t oxidize, I like the shade so far — so we’ll see!
How’s Conner Claire? Growing like a weed I’d imagine!!! I’m so pleased that her and Tabs are learning to love each other, Gracie would really be jealous. She loves it when I have friends over – matter of fact she loves it when friends come over. She is usually in their laps! She has never met a stranger…
Well hon, love your new site…. wish I could buy something! I will eventually, hopefully I’ll get my iPhone back after this plan is over and get a cover.
Take Care!!!
Grace and Peace to you and yours!!!
Gina and Gracie.
Karen says
Hi Gina,
Hmm, I’m guessing she mixes it with an oil to help thin it out (that’s what I do with full coverage concealers like MAC Pro Longwear… Makes it easier to wear because it doesn’t settle into fine lines). If oil isn’t an option maybe try adding in your fave oil-controlling moisturizer? Might be worth an experiment. If you love Urban Decay and love full coverage, their new matte foundation is amazing, by the way!
Connor Claire is great. She’s usually in a good mood, but today she’s kind of grumpy because I think she’s teething. Would you believe she’s six months old now? She’s growing out of her clothes so fast. A couple weeks ago I put the onesies that no longer fit her in a box and I got super emotional. They’re so small! My teacup baby is now a teapot baby. Waaah! Soon she’ll be bigger than her big bro Tabs. They sure do love each other.
I hope that things are well with you. Didn’t you move recently? How’s the new space? Say hi to Gracie for me.
Gina Bullard says
Awe!!! It must be so emotional to see and experience Connor Claire growing!!! It makes me gushy and I’m just a bystander! It truly must be incredible Karen! Thanks for the dibs on the foundation… I’ve really been in search of a holy grail. The new place is really great, there’s just been problems – its flooded (a little) twice, and I had to go to a hotel, the air wouldn’t shut off – I’ve got spiders — eeks! Everything has been taken care of but the bugs so far. Gracie loves it, and so do I, it’s so fun to have everything brand new! I’m truly blessed ! I’m still trying to decorate – moving is so financially challenging. I’ll get caught up eventually though and get a few new things, if I stop buying makeup!!!
Well, kiss that sweet baby for me, and headbutt tabs. Talk soon my friend,
Be Blessed,
Gina and Gracie (she says hello!!)

Hi Mira,
Thank you so much for this nice comment! I worked hard on the shop, so it’s nice to hear. Right now I’m doing more designs, so there will be even more stuff in the future. 🙂

You look beautiful in these photos, Karen! You have a great smile! I’ve never tried One and Done but it sounds perfect for every day. Another one on the list!!

Been wanting this since it came out in the spring, but can’t get it in Canada (even through Sephora). I’ve fallen in love with Guerlain Baby Glow. Gives me a before and after similar to yours in this post! I’ve turned 40 and suddenly feel I look my age: where did all those sun spots come from?? I swear I didn’t have a single one 2 years ago! : (
Looking forward to my next Vegas excursion to make a One and Done purchase!
