This morning, while Janet rocked, “What have you done for me lately?” I sang something similar while applying the products in Tarte’s latest makeup kit.
What Has Your Makeup Done For You Lately? — that’s a good question, and it’s also the name of the $49 six-piece kit (a QVC exclusive).
Listening to Janet, I came this close to teasing my hair and slipping into something with shoulder pads, but then I came to my senses, thankfully, because real life ’80’s fashion wasn’t always as cool as a John Hughes film… 🙂
For this look, I’m wearing all of the products in the kit except for the Maracuja Oil, and I’m also wearing Tarte’s Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Peaceful on my cheeks, because the kit doesn’t come with a blush.
The pieces that really stand out to me…
LipSurgence Lip Shine in Smitten: Pink perfection! The formula is on the softer side, though (it almost feels like a lip cream to me), so you might want to pop it in the fridge for a spell before using the sharpener hidden in the cap.
Retoucher Flawless Finish Bamboo Foundation Brush: AWESOMESAUCE! The dense, firm brush head, with its deceptively soft bristles, distributes foundation evenly and doesn’t leave streaks. A brush that works well and feels great? I love it.
Maracuja Miracle 12-Hr Foundation With Broad Spectrum SPF 15: I’m using Tan, but it’s also available in Fair, Light, Medium and Deep. At first, based on the swatch, I thought Tan might be a little too light for my NC 42 skin, but it darkens enough when applied, ending at a pretty close match for me.
Two pumps deliver coverage just shy of full and a mostly matte finish with a slight sheen.
I like the lightweight formula and how easy it is to blend with the Bamboo Brush, but watch out for the pump… It has a hair trigger.
Maracuja Miracle Foundation Swatches from the left: Light, Fair, Medium, Tan and Deep
ModernEyes Waterproof Creaseless Shadow/Liner: I like these colors and think they’re very flattering, but the shadow isn’t the easiest to blend. When I apply more than one layer, it starts to look heavy (and flakes after it dries!).
As for the liner, it gets the job done. I think it does a little better, though, along lash lines than it does along the water.
PRICE: $49 (a $160 value)
AVAILABILITY: Coming July 13 exclusively to QVC and QVC.com

oooh, the foundation is a semi-matte finish? I might have to check this one out after all! I was expecting dewy-city! And god, that purple is so stunning on you! Arrghh want it all!
Karen says
Hi Becca,
Yup! I was afraid it was going to be super shimmery, but it’s not! Just a touch dewy. 🙂
How have you been? And is Friday yet?

Love the purple eye-liner! And yes, the foundation does look really light! Plus the shade range is VERY limited (especially the darker tones)-more like a tinted moisturizer!!
Karen says
Are you a tarte girl, Musical? I like their blushes, lip products and powders.
BTW, I didn’t forget about your everyday eyeshadow color request…

You are the sweetest, bella! Thank you! :).
Yes, I have a cpl. of Tarte’s lip products and one blush (i have the Achiote collection). Love the minty flavor in the Lipsurgence sticks! Hope your Thursday was fun! xoxo.

I sometimes miss the 80s. I loved the big shirt over leggings look. But I couldn’t bring myself to buying leggings this time around…
Karen says
I’m guilty of rocking that look. I had a huge Esprit sweatshirt that I LOVED! I think my mom still wears it.

The foundation is gorgeous! Want!!!

Thank you! I was already determined to say No to Tarte’s kit but it helps when you’re not 100% thrilled with it. 🙂
OMG, 80s pictures – the photoshop self-portrait collage I could make. But won’t. HAHA! These aren’t bad at all. At least you didn’t have Flock of Seagull hair – and I know many people who did!

You list the swatches in order as first light, then fair. Did you mean to put fair then light? I just wanted to determine if the fair was lighter than the light. In the amazonian clay range fair was the lightest. Thanks!

Naughty Karen for showing me things we cant get in england. Just kidding although i wish tarte would be available in the uk too. I want that kit 🙁
Julia says
Well…Tarte cosmetics have done nothing for me as I have never tried a single item as they don’t sell it here in the U.K….it is all too sad! 🙁
Eden-Avalon says
Tarte’s foundations tend to be too deep or too light for me (i’m a Deep-Tan to Deep if we’re hitting it close.) Which is a shame because I hear a lot of good things.

The ’80s pic… HAHAHAHA

Thanks for swatching and reviewing, Karen! It helps to see the colors on someone who isn’t fair-skinned. Based on other reviews, I was afraid medium might even be too dark for me, but now I shall plow ahead and buy the set even though I probably don’t really need it. 😉 I really want that shadow/liner stick and mini maracuja oil for travel.

Hi Karen, I have a question. Since fair is supposed to be the lightest shade, is fair actually the first color in your swatches or is the color light really lighter than fair? I’m not even sure if I’m making sense right now. Basically I need to buy the lightest shade and it’s supposed to be fair but in your swatches it looks like light is even lighter? Thanks!
