Of course, on the ONE DAY I actually need the only cowboy hat I’ve ever owned, I can’t find it. Welcome to the story of my life. Wherever you are, my beloved black straw cowboy hat, I reckon we would’ve made sweet music together today, taking pictures of ourselves covered in glitter with the new Urban Decay Cowboy Junkie Shadows & Gloss Set ($38).
Yee Haw!
The new set rides into town for the holidays, kicking up glitter in its wake with four powder shadows, a liner and one lonesome lip gloss.
Three members of the set hail from the Midnight Cowboy eyeshadow gang, known for their eye-catching, dramatic glitter.
But this glitter is like dust on a desert trail (gets everywhere). Midnight Cowboy (a gritty, glittery peachy pink), Midnight Cowboy Rides Again (a glittery peachy tan) and Midnight Cowgirl (a glittery gold) leave fallout everywhere — beneath my eyes, around my nose and on my cheeks. Shoot, I even found some on Tabs.
I think if you’re going to try to get behind this set, you just gotta go with the glitter and fallout. Resistance is futile. It’s kinda like the zombie apocalypse that way, I guess.
The only one of the four shadows in the set that doesn’t have big chunks of glitter is purple Romp, but it still shimmers, and, because of its pigmentation and smooth texture, contrasts nicely with the three other more rugged and gritty shades.
Creamy brown Whiskey liner (within the palette) and sheer pink Lip Junkie Lipgloss in Midnight Cowboy (sits in the packaging outside the palette), a sticky gloss with a light minty flavor and scent that produces a mild tingling sensation on the lips, round out the set. Midnight Cowboy’s supposed to plump, but I don’t really notice a difference. I think both products suit the set well, though, even if neither one is particularly memorable on its own.

Damn, I know what I’m getting myself for xmas, or dropping really unsubtle hints for! I love LOVE Midnight Cowboy, and just live with the glitteration… it’s like hot, but painful shoes. Soooo prettyowowowwww there’s glitter in my eye lol.
Karen says
LOL, Molly!
I totally feel you on the hot/painful shoe analogy. 😀
I think you might especially dig Midnight Cowgirl — such a beautiful gold!
Have you tried the Lip Junkie glosses before?
Appu says
There’s too much glitter in this for me. Not a glitter fan 🙁 I love whiskey though. The shade is so pretty. I am planning to get the jackpot set. I know, I am late to get it but do you have any idea until when it’s going to be around? 🙂
Karen says
Hi Appu,
You probably have a lot of time — those things seem to hang around for months afterward.
Appu says
Oh great then. I felt this would be a nice way to try a few colours. Especially Mildew and Whiskey! 🙂
Karen says
Mildew is AMAZING and would look gorgeous on your skin. 🙂 So would Ransom!
auroragyps says
Oh, I just got The Jackpot set & I love it. So great for wanting to try a ton of colors without buying all full sized pencils (although I kind of wish they were the bigger mini 24/7 liners). Of the newer colors, I’ve only tried Binge so far & I love it, but Mildew is totally next.
Karen says
Hi Auroragyps,
Mildew is my new 24/7 crush! Let me know what you think of it once you break that bad boy in. 🙂
Lauren says
I love everything midnight cowboy. I love to put a little Midnight Cowboy on my eyelid and then do a black cat eye, it puts a nice modern twist on the cat eye. For a night time look I add a little pizazz with Midnight Cowboy Rides Again! Ooh la la!
P.S
I love the zombie apocalypse reference!
Karen says
Hi Lauren,
Your cat eye look sounds really pretty. I’ll have to try it!
What brush do you like to use with Midnight Cowboy? I’m a flat shadow brush girl myself (seems to reduce the fallout).
Karen says
P.S. I’m feeling ill-prepared for the zombie apocalypse. For reals!
Lauren says
Hey Karen,
I use Mac’s ever so wonderful 239 brush for Midnight Cowboy. I never seem to have a problem with fallout when I use that brush. Plus the use of Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion helps a lot!
Also, it is very important to be ready for the zombie apocalypse. Be prepared! This may help http://www.zombiedefense.org/main/index.html
Karen says
I looooove that brush! It’s awesome for anything glittery (like MAC pigments and these shadows) because it does a great job of controlling the product. 🙂 Do you ever use it wet? It’s amazing.
And LOL re: Zombie Defense. I’ve actually read the Zombie Survival Guide, but I’m starting to second guess some of the tactics after watching The Walking Dead on AMC. Those zombies can problem solve! Not good for woman-, man- and kitty- kind. 🙁
Vixen says
Okay. I just have to ask. Karen, have you lost weight?? I swear you look so much thinner these days!
Karen says
Hey Vixen,
I’ve been running a little bit more (trying to work on my cardio fitness) and eating more vegetarian meals. But honestly I think it’s the bangs!! They change everything. 🙂
How are you? Have you been having a good week (makeup and otherwise) so far?
Kajal Couture says
I hate the fallout factor but still love these shadows so much! I’ll pass on this set cuz I have these shades already, but think its great for the young-uns!
Karen says
Hi Kajal Couture,
If I had a younger sis I’d totally hook her up with this, LOL!
Vonvon says
I thought I ma quite done with neutral shades for a while…been too many shades like these in my stash lately. but Romp kinda make it…now I wouldn’t mind having this palette….:D
Karen says
Hi Vonvon,
Romp is cool! 🙂
Ru says
My question is, where did all the glitter go on you? I don’t see any fallout! I would like to love MCRA, I do love it, but I too find glitter in places I shouldn’t :(. I wish they would fix this. This kit is not for me. The glittery shades I got in the BOS III are enough to trouble me for a while.
Karen says
Hi Ru,
I did my eyes first and cleaned most of it off before applying foundation/powder. There were still some scragglers, though!
Amber says
I have that problem with Sidecar! I never use it, for that very reason.
Karen says
Ahh, Sidecar!! Have you tried applying it with a wet brush?
Amber says
I haven’t. I have been meaning to get some mixing medium so I can try She Who Dares wet!
Karen says
PRETTY! You’ll have to mentally prepare yourself for some bling, LOL.
Michelle says
That is my biggest pet peeve with UD shadows — the glitter fallout! One time after I got the Alice palette I decided to bust out a look with it — only to find chunks of glitter all over my face. Gag. I sold the thing! It is too bad, because the colors and pigmentation are great. I just wish they would get that we don’t want glitter chunks all over our faces LOL 🙂
Karen says
Hi Michelle,
Aww, bummer that the Alice palette didn’t work for ya. There are some really lovely UD shadows that aren’t a glitter explosion, though, like the ones in the Get Baked from a few years ago. I use that one all the time and have no trubs with the fallout. Dunno if you like warm shades, but you can purchase the shades individual pans:
https://www.makeupandbeautyblog.com/cosmetics/urban-decays-get-baked-palette-gives-me-the-munchies/
Michelle says
I do have the UD Naked palette, which I really like (no obvious fallout). Since I am 37 — the worst part of glitter fallout is when it wants to settle into pores and fine lines (yikes!). I’ll have to check out some of those other shades you mentioned!
Karen says
Hi Michelle,
All four of colors are really great summer shades. 🙂 Oh, and I forgot to mention that the palette also comes with a liner called Bourbon, which is one of the best (IMHO) 24/7 pencils of all time. Urban Decay sells a full-sized version of it, and it would go fabulously with your Naked Palette. Here’s a quick look at it just in case you’re interested:

knownever says
While fallout on one’s face is bad, it’s the fallout that lands directly in your eyeball and causes searing pain that I tend to frown most strenuously at. Does no one else find that with glittery shadows/liners? Maybe i just tend to rub my eyes too much in the course of a night…
Karen says
Hi Knownever,
I haven’t had the problem; maybe it’s a brush thing? I like to use brushes with densely packed brush heads, like the MAC 239 shadow brush, with glittery products. I think the firmness helps control where the glitter lands.
Blovetbeauty says
It would be a perfect set if not for the glitter!
Karen says
I figure the glitter’s something you’ll either love/not love.
What do you think of Romp? It’s kinda hot, yes?
Glosslizard says
I would be all over this set if the glitter wasn’t so…. everywhere! I love the look of Romp! I don’t mind a little glitter, but I prefer shimmer to bang-bang-sparkle! I may just cave on it at some point anyway….
‘Sides, once the zombies attack, glitter will no longer be an issue! 😉
Karen says
Romp kinda rocks. I’m gonna layer it on top of UD’s Ransom 24/7 and hope for some magic.
Do you have that shade, btw? It’s a very “you” sort of purple liner.
steph b says
Romp is the only color in the set I really want. How does it compare to some of the other UD purples you can buy as singles? Is it close to Ecstasy or Purple Haze?
Karen says
I have Frigid, Flash, Ecstasy and (I think) Purple Haze and would be happy to do a comparison swatch pic for you in the morning! Cool?
The whole time change is throwing off my photography schedule, sigh… Dang this sun setting early thing!
steph b says
Very cool! Thanks.
Karen says
No problem. 🙂 The sun’s coming up over the mountain so I’ll have it up soon. A big fat YEA for ambient morning light!
Glosslizard says
Ooh, I want to see that swatch pic too! I don’t think I have Ransom yet, I really need to splurge on a few more UD liners, mebbe one of those wonderful sets…..
Lindsay B says
Try putting it on wet. I have a bunch of the UD shadows with glitter, and I find if I wet the brush, it drastically minimizes fallout.
Karen says
Thanks, Lindsay! That’s a great idea.
Sarah says
This is a cute set! I’m a sucker for these kits with everything you need for a fast face but I’m a little sad to hear about the fallout.
Side note: Karen, I just rescued a kitten yesterday and I’m new to cat ownerships so I’m trying to learn everything I can!
Karen says
Hi Sarah,
Congrats on your new kitten! What is his/her name?
If you ever have any questions you can always ask the ladies here… there are quite a few cat lovers! 🙂
Sarah says
Hey name is Karma because we rescued her 🙂
Danielle says
Omg, I’m totally loving the purple and the eyeliner…
Karen says
Hi Danielle,
The purple shade is a stunner!
BeautyMaven says
Ah! You read my mind =) I got the Ulta holiday book in the mail today, and this was the set I wanted, haha!! LOVE THE PURPLE!!
I have to admit– I don’t understand the whole gritty texture of Cowboy.. or why it’s so popular? UD has a handful of shadows like this, which is a shame, because they can have such a nice texture!! (Smog is my fave, mm!)
Beautiful pics, and I’m lovin’ the cowboy hat! At first I thought the water bottle was a *ah-em* “beverage” but then I was like “Oh! That’s just water!” Hahaha!!
Karen says
Hi BeautyMaven,
The purple totally rocks! What else looked good in the Ulta mailer?
I know it’s not a shadow, but have you ever tried UD’s Bourbon 24/7 Liner? It’s a really pretty brown with teeny golden glitter. LOVE IT!
Gina says
Romp looks strikingly similar to UD’s Frigid deluxe shadow, so I’ll pass on this set since I already have Midnight Cowboy/Cowgirl. But how you used these shadows is gorgeous! How did you layer them?
Karen says
Hi Gina,
Yup, I did. I used Whiskey on the lid as a base, Romp from the lid to the crease and Midnight Cowgirl from the crease to the brow bone. Then I blended until I couldn’t blend any more, haha!
BeautyMaven says
BTW love your bangs!!
Karen says
Thanks, hone!
Phyrra says
Le sigh. I just want Romp. Pretty purple!
Karen says
It’s really pretty! Bet it would look great with some cat eyeliner.
makeup morsels says
I think I’ll pass on this set because it looks like I have similar colors in my stash. I lovee how you used the palette in your FOTD though! It’s a nice everyday look. p.s. that cowboy hat picture is priceless!
Karen says
I really hope I find it! 🙁 I can’t remember where I put it when we moved.
Ariel says
Looks pretty on you, but oh my gosh, I don’t think I can handle the fallout.
Karen says
Hi Ariel,
It can be annoying, but one way to help minimize it is to do your eyes first, clean up any excess mess, and then do the rest of your face. That’s the order I go in when working with shadows like these.
Jasmine says
Hey Karen,
your make up is so beautiful !
The shades of this palette are pretty, Urban Decay always launch beautiful palettes …
Karen says
Hi Jasmine,
Thanks, hon!
Are you a glitter shadow kind of girl?
Jasmine says
yes but I love mat eye shadows too 🙂
Soo says
I love how you used the colors on your eyes! it looks quite lovely.
Karen says
Hi Soo,
Thanks, babe! Are you an Urban Decay fan?
mint says
that’s a really good set! 😀 looks awesome on you~
does the lip gloss really cools and plumps your lips?
Karen says
Hi Mint,
It has a light tingly feeling that goes away fairly quickly. I didn’t really notice a difference in volume!
Nina says
ohh … that is a pretty palette! whiskey!
Karen says
LOL! Whiskey is cool, but Bourbon will always be my number one.
I just realized it sounds like we’re talking about booze.
Nina says
i know right??? lushes – thats what we are!
for ud24x7 pencils, that is!
Kim says
Oh, this is right up my alley. Light, glittery shades with lots of fallout (hello, sparkly face). 🙂
Karen says
You’re so funny!
I had coffee with a friend over the weekend and she was wearing a light sprinkling of this glitter shadow in her under eye area and it looked really beautiful. It was just a lil’ bit of sparkle, but not too much. Maybe try that with one of your glittery shadows? If you have something like a MAC 217 brush you can just lightly dust it on.
Kim says
I’m definitely going to give it a whirl. The unintentional Lorac fallout is so last month! hee hee! Plus, you know how I love the sparkle! 🙂 I’ll let you know on Monday if I get any odd looks this weekend!
Karen says
LOL!! You won’t get any odd looks… just people staring deep into your eyes. They’ll wonder, “Where does she get that glow?”
Maggie says
I’ve never been able to understand why people like the Midnight Cowboy/girl shadows. I’m a glitter fiend, but I hate those shadows! The glitter fallout is insane – seems to get everywhere but on your eyelid (including IN your eyes, hurray) 😛 I was really happy when I found Too Faced’s Glamazon – it’s a really, really similar shade to Midnight Cowboy (Rides Again), but the silver glitter actually STAYS in the shadow when you apply it! I love the way you put the colors together, though 🙂
Deb says
Oh, the glitter! Sometimes in the morning I forget which UD shadows in my palettes are glittery, and when I get to work and wake up, it’s like Edward freaking Cullen I’m so sparkly.
Karen says
LOL, Deb! I kinda wish we could all sparkle like Edward sometimes…
Courtnie says
Im with everyone else. HATE THE FALLOUT. these UD palettes suck me in though. I have one, and the only color I never use has insane glitter.
lo says
I love those colors so much. And sometimes I really enjoy glitter… but too much is too much if you’re finding it all over Tabs! I guess I’ve finally hit my glitter threshold 🙁 I wish they’d release this palette in a non-sparkly version, because it’s so so pretty otherwise!
SaraJane says
*sigh* I love the way Romp looks and I love the new liner shader. I already have everything else in this palette, though. Some I just purchased so I definitely can’t justify an entire palette just for a liner and a new purple shadow. Darn.
Personally, I love the glitter. It’s not a teenagey glitter like some makeup can be. I work in a creative environment so even at 34, it’s nice to be able to have some fun with my makeup if I want to. I have a few of the stardust shadows and love them. I always use eye primer to help trap the glitter and put a tissue under my eye when applying (with a brush!). Then, I find scotch tape helps get the remaining fallout on my cheeks. I don’t usually get any more glitter on me during the day after that.
Wouldn’t it be great if someone could invent glitter that didn’t fall out? I’m not even sure how that would be possible. haha
Maggie says
Love how you used the eyeshadows here, but your face looks so flawless and fresh! What face products did you use?
Maryjoy says
Why doesn’t Urban Decay have the Whiskey eye pencil available to buy separately? It is my favorite color, real warm brown without sparkle, and I can only get it with in mixed mini pencils kits and now this palette?
scarlet says
I hate glitter fallout! It’s one of my biggest pet peeves with UD palettes! But romp is absolutely gorgeous on your eyes! Is that the only purple you used? I think I’ll just buy the singles for romp.
